“Good value”
Reviewed April 27, 2009

Went up to San Francisco over Easter weekend. This was the least expensive reputable place we could find, and it was a great experience. We arrived late at night, and were immediately impressed with the cleanliness of the lobby and friendliness of the staff. We asked for a microwave and fridge in the room, but when we arrived, there was a full kitchenette (oven and all!). The room was a bit old and dated, but not shabby, and it was thoroughly cleaned and restocked every day. The parking was free, which, in San Francisco, is a HUGE plus! Additionally, there was free wi-fi, although the connection was not very high-speed.
The hotel is in a good location. It's maybe two blocks from a bus stop. It's only about four blocks from the "Crookedest Street", but there are STEEP hills, so we opted to drive instead. Someone mentioned stepping over homeless people on the way to and from the hotel, but we came back really late at night several times, and really didn't experience any of that. In addition, we didn't have any problem with noise, but our room was far away from the road.
One thing to keep in mind is that there is tax charged on the room, which was not mentioned when we made our reservations. It was 15% above the quoted rate. We most likely would not have changed our minds about staying had we known, but it would have been good information to have.
Overall, we would definitely recommend the Redwood Inn to any of our friends traveling in the San Francisco area.

We really enjoyed our stay here basically because of the great information we got about the attractions, the places to go, the directions , the restaurants, ... The staff is ery friendly and competent. Also, the hotel is located in a very hot spot in the city. You can't go wrong if you think about the staff, tha location, the price, the rooms, ... The four of us will definetly be back here! :)

On vacation from Argentina foun this little hotel with very nice and clean rooms and extraordinary attention from Yuan and May who helped us in every possible way making a very pleasant stay. Parking is free (very important as other hotels wanted to charge up to 40 dollars per day) and it has a simple but adecuate breackfast included.

After reading some of the previous reviews about reservations not being held, I was a little worried after driving 600 miles from Vegas. When we arrived, we had no problems at all. The staff were more than helpful, giving us a map of the local area, and pointing out which buses/trams to catch to get to the local tourist traps. The room itself was just fine, clean, an ok size, and perfect for the money. The only downside was the amount of noise that came from outside, though, this was more due to the fact that some people have little or no consideration for others staying in the hotel, staying in the car park shouting to each other, and constantly pushing the "lock" button on there car key fob so the horn would keep blaring!!!! The car park is no bigger than a starbucks, if you can't find your car in something that small, you think you ought to be driving at all??? All in all a great place to stay. Fantastic location, within walking distance to most places except Union Square. I would definately recommend this place.

San Francisco is quite pricey overall, so we were looking for the best place on a tight budget. The accommodation was clean and basic, but it was in an ideal location(Lombard Street). Be careful when you book as they don't send a receipt or email confirming anything and they don't take the money out until you get there, and since its quite pricey, your holidaying budget might get a hit. Overall the location is the selling point here.

A friendly and helpful lady checked me in, offered me either a room with a view or a room at the back which was a bit quieter. The room is ok, fairly basic, but has a fridge, TV & free wi-fi. The motel has it's own car park and parking is free.
Traffic noise is still audible even in one of the "quieter rooms".
They do charge a $50 refundable deposit though.
There's no breakfast as such, but they did have some huge doughnuts in reception in the morning - and damn tasty they were as well!
It's an ok place, a bit basic, but not bad.

I was very concerned about this hotel as it's so close to the Wharf and so cheap. But I needn't have worried. I booked the hotel for $100/night for 8 nights and was told that was the AAA rate for a 1 bed / 2 person room and the best rate they could give it for. (I booked for a friend who came later in the week and they told her to thank me for getting her the very best deal they have to offer.) The room was clean, though small, and I felt safe on the property. (I was on the 3rd floor near the back.) The desk staff was very friendly and helpful. I was in town for a wedding and stayed at a different hotel one night and they let us check out and back in for that night so we didn't have to double pay. Parking was free, there were donuts and muffins for breakfast every day (yummy!) and it was within (a long) walking distance to Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf (but Pier 39 is a LONG walk away) and Gharadelli Square. There was a $50 deposit for the key and the remote which we thought was extreme, but it's given back at check-out time. We also returned the remote early and they gave us back $25. If I need to return to the city and need a cheap place to stay, I would stay here again.

  • Liked — Value, location, friendly staff
  • Disliked — Remote/Key deposit (but really no major complaints)
