“This hotel was perfect for our stay in San Francisco!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2014

Incredible customer service, very clean rooms, excellent location, historic charm, and after saying all of that, it is quite reasonably priced as well. Our bell man was so nice! He was charismatic, efficient, helpful, and charming. It really works to the hotel's advantage that he is the first person most of their guests will meet! Our room was very spacious and clean with great decor. I loved the charm of the older hotel. There are a LOT of bums living on the streets of San Francisco, and it was nice to have a hotel on a part of the street that had security and a lack of homeless druggies. My only complaints are that the shower was supposed to be handheld and wasn't, and that parking cost $35 a day. However, after asking around, this is some of the cheapest parking in the whole city, and is therefore not really the hotel's fault....but I still find it ridiculous! Overall I loved this place and would love to stay here again if I ever come back to San Fran!

Service was very good and rooms were clean, old fashioned, and comfortable. Beautiful lobby. Like many in-city hotels, the rooms are fairly small. Conveniently located steps away from BART and Muni. Location is very central but also close to the Tenderloin- an area known for homelessness and other problems. It did not feel unsafe, however, and in the evenings hotel staff checks room keys in the lobby as a security measure.

Some areas for improvement:
Walls are thin and sound carries.
Water pressure is poor.
Wifi didn't work during my entire stay - when I called tech support they said it was a known issue for days but had no resolution estimate.
Long waits (several minutes) for elevators at peak times.
Air conditioner window unit rattled so loudly it had to be turned off. Thankfully, much of the year A/C is not needed in San Francisco.

Overall: affordable, centrally located, but lacking in some basic comforts.

Lobby was nice. Receptionist was terrible, slow service and didn't apologise after spending ages in the queue. Rooms were small, dank and uncared for (wallpaper coming off the wall in our room). The bathrooms were tiny. The hotel is not in a good location, and the neighbourhood is a little dodgy at night. Hotel just felt dark and to quote another reviewer 'haunted'. The lobby toilets were out of action for most of our stay, when they were open they were dirty. The only staff positive was the guys on the bus desk, who were great and really knowledgable. We really wished we'd spent a bit more and booked a hotel either closer to the piers or near union square.

A perfectly good place to stay for a reasonable rate and very close to city and subway (BART). Service was good, place clean and well serviced. Lots of 'old world charm' as the building is a bit dated - could be a plus or a minus depending on how you like it! I would use it again if in the same circumstances!

Room Tip: Try to get a front facing room, as rear-facing rooms look into a common courtyard space - maybe not...

We stayed here for two nights and found it a wonderful hotel, people have been saying that it feels old and dated, well it is old,it has a charming feel of the twenties about it which was great, yes there are a lot of homeless people there but they are all over the city, and the ones we spoke to were friendly and helpfull(remember, there for the grace if god....)
Parking is easy Just open your eyes and follow the signs, there is no free parking in san Francisco, although the fuel gauge on our car did seem to have dropped a bit when we collected it!?
Overall a lovely nostalgic hotel

I read a lot of negative things about the hotel before travelling and must say I found it very good. The location for transport is very good with tram and buses running regularly to Fisherman's Wharf at $2. Good sized room with comfortable bed. I was on the second floor facing Market Street and there were a number of sirens but no more than many major cities I have visited.
Sam's diner across the street I found to be well priced and the food was good, opens at 6.30 for early birds.
There are a number of homeless people around the area but I did not feel threatened and was not actually asked for money by many as I passed by.
The only negative point is the lifts which are really slow but I would certainly stay there again if visiting San Francisco

Absolutely coming back. Staff is top notch. What really made my trip was the manager, Kazi Ahmed. He went out of his way to make my evening go smoothly and is the reason I stayed here the rest of the weekend! 5 stars no doubt
