“This is a great hotel”
Reviewed April 2, 2014 via mobile

OK this is not the st Francis but this is great hotel. I was a bit worried by some the reviews but this hotel has loads of character great staff and real ambience. San Francisco is all about quirkiness and the Whitcomb has this in spades.

The rooms are big especially the twins and the beds are really comfortable. The bathrooms are a bit dated but how long do you spend in there.

The area is not the most salubrious yes there are homeless people outside but they are all over SF so don't let it put you off staying here.

I don't know why anyone visiting would drive here pick up a car when you leave the F trolley car stop is right outside the door.

Its a 15 20 minute walk to Powell st to buy your muni card don't do one way tickets it will cost you a fortune

All in all I loved it a great introduction to SF James on the desk is a great ambassador for his city.

Agree, the Hotel has some charming features. The lobby is grand and the staff was very nice. But...It is VERY difficult to find the hotel's valet parking! The entrance to the parking is on 8th Street, right behind the hotel. There is no sign, it looks like your pulling into a public parking lot. Keep going straight and you'll see the valet sign for the hotel. Be aware, we had to carry our luggage up some stairs, into the hotel, and through the large lobby to get to the registration desk. Thank goodness we were only there for one night, so we didn't have much! When you reserve a room, make sure to reserve a parking spot too. It is $35 extra, but there are no other options. We were going to the Orpheum to see Mama Mia and the hotel is the perfect location. There is a Starbucks and a nice restaurant right in the hotel so you never need the car again. You can easily walk to the theatre. But keep in mind the sidewalks are full (full) of vagrants and beggars. Mid-Market is a sad area of SF and the City is trying to get a handle on this problem, but the sidewalks are covered with passed out people, trash and sleeping bags. Back at the hotel... we did book one of the "newly renovated superior" queen rooms on the 4th floor. There are no continuous stair cases so you have to use the elevators. Our room was OK. The bathroom was awful, peeling paint and a stained tub. However, our bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in (even at home)! The construction is almost finished and when the window is closed, the room is quiet.

Room Tip: Try not to get a room on Market Street, it is noisy. Do ask for a "renovated" room.

This hotel was exactly what we needed and expected-- a bed and bathroom. The room was quite small, with no fridge or microwave. The hotel is old but has a nice "antique" kind of feel. The walls are fairly thin, and we heard people walking by in the hallway. However, it was clean, reasonably priced and conveniently located very near public transportation. The concierge was very friendly and helpful.

The reviews are pretty accurate, but if you understand that this is not the nicest neighborhood and that you get what you pay for, it's a great place to stay. The central location is great, perfect for public transportation. The room was dated, but it's all part of the historic 'charm'. The overall value for the Hotel Whitcomb was fantastic. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street. Market Street is very noisy at all hours of the night and day.

We stayed 4 nights at the whitcombe thursday-monday. The location is very close to the city center and all the shopping availible there. The room was a little bit chilly and it was impossible to get any hot air from the AC equipment in the room. Also the noise from the construction site opposite to the hotel woke us up on the weekdays at 7am. The consierge service in the hotel was really good booking winetours, airport shuttle and restaurants as well as advising on bus transportation etc...

Also the diner across the street has very good breakfast.

This hotel is old and historic, and it still feels old. The rooms are small, dark, and musty. The internet was shoddy, especially on a Saturday night, could never log on. Elevators were slow. And the area is ok because of location, lots of homeless, however right next to the BART station. It is overpriced for what you get, they get away with this because of the location. So many hotels are overpriced for this area, and is was the lowest when I searched, however I still don't think worth it. Not sure I would rebook.

this is a budget hotel - that I have stayed at twice now - my rooms have been clean and maybe because I ask for a king sized bed are spacious enough for one - this last room was in an alcove with 2 walk in closets

yes there are homeless on the streets - however coming from NYC this is not a shocker - the F trolley-car muni - the civic center Muni - and the Bart to the airport are right outside the door - this is totally convenient - check the sunday brunch at farmer brown (look for my review ) which for $2 you can take the F roundtrip if you don't feel like walking

I've read some of the other reviews and the staff have been nothing but pleasant 2 me
yes at night you must go down and escort a guest up - but I like that secure feeling that no one unwanted is roaming the halls

this is not a luxury hotel - you should know that by the price and the proximity 2 downtown

Room Tip: call the front desk and request what you want a week before traveling and then again the day of arri...
