We came into the city to see an opera and chose the Phoenix due to its convenient location. The hotel is an oasis in the Tenderloin. Once you're behind the gates you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle. The front desk staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Our room was well-appointed except for the lack of a/c which was initially a disappointment, but it turned out we did not need it. The best part of the Phoenix was being able to hang out late at the restaurant and bar. The cocktails were creative and the food was even more so. We are serious foodies and were blown away by the late night bites. The Korean bok choy and duck confit dish was the stuff dreams are made of. Our other favorite part of our stay was enjoying the pool in the morning. It is such a nice pool with beautiful tile and swimming in it made us feel like kids again.

We stayed here a weekend and had a great time here. This old motel has a very nice quiet courtyard with a great pool, a free breakfast table with muffins and coffee, and a great restaurant. Only downsides is the noise level during the weekend nights and the neighborhood to the east... It's probably best to take a cab most places (google crime map in SF, it's a very dark red right there...)

Dear Holcklarsen,

We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on your experience here. While it's true our neighborhood has its challenges in some directions, it also offers some incredible highlights in food, art, and live music fare. It's our absolute pleasure to help guests discover these. Our greatest pride is providing guests with an original experience that exceeds all expectations and allows the freedom to pursue all that this great city has to offer. And - while we'll never be the quietest hotel in the city, you can rest assured we do everything we can to ensure a peaceful, relaxing and refreshing stay to all guests.

Thanks again for writing, and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Cheers,

Great hotel this, had a great old motel feel to it with a really cool and child out vibe

Beds were huge and really comfy, strong wifi and I even loved the free coffee and buns in the morning.

We are at the restaurant one night and loved the food here too

Only downside is the location of the hotel, it is not in the best area of San Fran but you felt safe enough within the hotel itself ... Would stay here again

Dear Sarah M,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are delighted to provide a hotel experience that is unlike any other in the city. While our property is an unlikely modern oasis, safe and secluded from the nearby streets, we are also deeply committed to improving the surrounding neighborhood so that our guests may feel at ease with every step. As with any city, ours has its challenges, but we continue moving in the right direction to create a brighter future for our communities. Meanwhile, our 24 hour staff is always happy to help with directions, walking paths, and rides to any destination.

Thanks again for writing, and we hope to welcome you back soon.

Cheers! ~

Easy walk to centre of town, and very accessible public transport.
Wifi was excellent, very strong and no dropouts!
Very comfortable bed, and excellent sized room - you weren't tripping over own luggage, and tho I stayed their solo, a companion's bags also would have been out of the way.

I had been warned about it being in Tenderloin, but I felt safe - just alert to the characters around the hotel.

Staff really friendly, free city maps and gave good suggestions for local restaurants and areas to explore.

Room Tip: Second floor has nice view out to the pool.

While the Tenderloin is sketchy and often depressing, Phoenix Hotel was a good and affordable place to hang out and rest my head during my business trip to San Francisco. The Internet was free and strong. The employees were gracious and helpful. And the room was spacious.

You do hear other guests but that's more a factor of the glass windows facing the courtyward and the general classic outdoor hallway motel design. But it's minimal and I didn't find it distracting.

It was unusual to check in on a Sunday and have a full blown club turn up in the courtyard complete with thumping bass and flowing booze but it just added to the ambiance of the uniqueness of the hotel.

It's not the most kid-friendly place but the pool is a perk and I did see a number of European families at the hotel.

Very cool place to stay. Staff is nice and very helpful. The rooms all view the pool and are very comfortable and decorated very nice. Amazingly comfortable bed. This isn't a super quiet location, but didn't bother me at all. I'll stay there again.

Everything was great! We stayed over 4th of July Weekend and we were so pleased! Katie (sorry if I got the name wrong as I was pretty much always with cocktail in hand), Lauren and the Gentlemen at night were always so helpful and nice! Parking was a bit tricky with the 4th of July party that went on but night staff was cool about taking my keys and parking it for us! And hey, free parking in the City? Awesome! Saigon Sandwich is just across the street, great pool, comfy beds and pillows, neat decor and tvs that will let you hook up Nintendo? YES PLEASE! I really enjoyed my time in the City because I knew I had a great place to come back to after a long day of vacationing. Oh yeah, I mentioned when making the reservation that it was a special romantic getaway and there was a bottle of champagne and rose petals on the bed. : ) I own a B&B and know what it takes to make people smile. So, a big thank you to everyone at The Phoenix! Hope this place never changes.

Room Tip: We were in 42. It was great!
