“Almost a 4-star”
Reviewed December 29, 2011

This is a nice-looking hotel in the center of San Francisco's Financial District, close to North Beach, Chinatown, Embarcadero/Ferry Building, Union Square. It's got an "upscale" look but otherwise lacks in character. The driveway where you stop to unload is cramped and the lobby area feels ad-hoc, or at least not very attractive. Still the rooms are comfortable and large enough, and the service is outstanding.

Unfortunately there are a number of little annoyances that cause me to want to give it 3.5 stars: leaving only one robe in the room even thought they know there are two guests; making us ask for a coffee maker and not giving us everything but tea bags; charging an outrageous $54 per day for parking; promising a $5 coupon for skipping room service and at checkout telling us we have to sign up for their points plan to get it; leaving the absolute minimum number of towels necessary in the bathroom.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the highest floor they'll give you to get a better view of the cityscape.

The Le Meridien was a pleasant retreat during a hectic work week in San Francisco. Room service was fast and top notch. Staff was beyond helpful. Rooms were spacious and immaculate. And for the first time in a long time, I slept like a baby. The beds were beyond comfortable. Only wish would be for a robe within the room...which should be provided for the cost per night.

Stayed only for one night as transit hotel to other parts of California.

Location: Financial district near shopping district and china town.

Room: Clean and reasonably sized. Our room has 2 big comfortable queen sized beds that can easily fit 2 adults and 2 children.

Service: Check-in was quite fast without fuss.

Cons: Hotel walls very thin. Can hear people walking or making noise next door.
American breakfast quite expensive at $22++ and internet comes at $12++ per day.

Le Meridien is a good property, stylish, well appointed for business travellers and efficiently run. Compared to the Westin in SoMa and the Fairmont in Nob Hill, it pales a bit.

Its purpose is best for business travel. It's not centrally located to any touristic sites other than the Ferry Building (2 blocks away), so it would be a bit of a haul to get to Union Square, Chinatown, and even the core Financial District.

During the week, there is a lot of business traffic. On the weekends, it's a virtual ghost town, which was off putting for me, personally. There is almost no foot or car traffic and you're surrounded by tall office buildings and no retail shops.

I came primarily to check out Union Square and walked as my mode of transportation. It's a long walk but manageable if you're used to it. If you have to base your time around Union Square, I'd recommend staying closer to that area.

The hotel, itself, is decorated like many contemporary hotels in beige/black. The business centre consists of 3 PCs and a printer, so fine for printing out boarding passes and surfing the 'Net. The bar/lounge is right in the middle of the reception area. I didn't visit it, but it looked nice.

I upgraded to a Bay view room for $20 more per night and didn't regret it at all. The alternative City view faces onto car traffic. My room was on the top floor, the Preferred Guest level, which was a pleasant surprise. The room was a comfy size, with Westin-like Heavenly king-sized bed, desk, 2 chair lounging area, flat screen TV (not the greatest quality, but fine), and a fair-sized bathroom. The bathroom door was a massive industrial-type sliding door that didn't latch into the frame nor did it have a lock. You had privacy, but can't help but feel slightly exposed to someone deciding to slide the door open while you were inside. The room has double door closet space with a light that turns on when the doors are open. There is an in-room safe and bar, as well. In terms of appointments, it was a great room. The air vent ran 24x7 but helped drown out what little street/hallway noise there was during my stay.

In terms of the neighbourhood, if you're there for business and it's not a long stay, it's a fine hotel. For tourism, it's off the beaten path. There is an Elephant and Castle around the corner, a Starbucks outside the front door and a Walgreens, so you can get the basics very easily. No retail shopping in sight. The Ferry Building is good in the daytime for a coffee, walk, or meal by the water. There are also small restaurants where you can grab a tea, some seafood or small souvenirs.

I didn't get a chance to check out the gym.

It's within walking distance of the Embarcadero BART station, so you can zip in/out to/from the airport. Some streets on the way to the hotel were sketchy but not what I'd categorize as unsafe.

Room Tip: On check-in, I always ask for a complementary upgrade if there is availability. This has yielded suc...

We had Le Meridien cater our wedding reception held at the Bently Reserve next door. They were the best choice for catering because their kitchen is below the Bently Reserve, so you don't have to pay transportation costs for the food or tables or plates, etc. The coordinator assigned to us was Kelly Maclellan from Le Meridien and she was absolutely traffic for all the planning throughout that year. She responds to emails very quickly, she will patiently answer all your questions (even if they are the same question) and she allowed me to bring 3 people to the food tasting instead of the usual 2.

They supplied us with everything we needed in the price, plus included was a the honeymoon suite for the wedding night, along with 2 rooms for 1 night for our parents to stay in. The rooms are beautiful and very nicely decorated. The hotel is well maintained, the rooms are big, the beds are comfortable and if you can afford the honeymoon suite, it's over 1100 sq feet.

This is definitely once of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in and the service comes with it. It is located in downtown SF, close to everything and there are a lot of food choices within walking distance.

Parking is very expensive, so I suggest parking across the street in another lot.

Despite a few minor issues the hotel was great and I'd stay there again. Everything was clean and mostly modern looking and definitely on par with Starwood Standards.

The minor issues: the bathroom has a sliding door rather than an actual door that closes shut. This was mostly a problem because we were a group of friends sharing a room, but if you're on our own its a moot point. Also, I feel like hotels this day and age should offer an iHome or at least something to connect an iPod; they only had a CD player.

I was initially worried about the location because we were there for fun and the hotel is located in the middle of a business district (on that note, perfect if you're there for business). However, it was walking distance to a BART and Muni Station putting the city within easy reach. We walked to North Beach one night and that was an easy walk; also walked to Union Square, which was a bit further, but still manageable.

I rented three rooms at their hotel last weekend to stay there with some friends and family. The rooms were very clean and nicely decorated. They were all very large. The staff really made an effort to take care of the guests. I was very impressed with everyone that I worked with while I was staying there. It is also in a very nice location. We will be staying there again.
