“Good hotel in central location”
Reviewed August 14, 2013 via mobile

We stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Abri and really liked it. To start with, it is very close to Powell Street station, which is where you can get the BART train directly to and from the airport in about 30 minutes. On arrival, we were upgraded to a King Size bed and asked if we would prefer a quiet room. It was definitely quiet, you would not know you were in the centre of the city. The room we had was quite small but nice and modern with everything you needed. The hotel is close to shops and restaurants and all the major sights in San Francisco are within walking distance, as long as you don't mind hills! Breakfast is not included, which is a shame, but there are plenty of coffee shops etc in the vicinity. The staff were all very polite and helpful and I liked that they wear Converse as part of their uniform!

To begin with the positive, we really enjoyed the location of this hotel. Just a short walk out the main entrance, and you are close to lots of shops, restaurants etc. You’re also close to the cable cars and trams, for easy access to the rest of the city. Although you can notice that the hotel is situated in an old building, it looks quite modern and neat. The staff was also polite and very helpful. However, two aspects drag down our overall impression. The rooms are quite small, and if you get a room faced outwards to the street, expect some noise. It seems that most decent hotels in downtown San Francisco are expensive, so in terms of price/quality I guess this hotel was ok. However, I would usually expect more for that amount of money.

Stayed here for 3 nights in January on a friend's recommendation. It was our first trip to SF and we were very much on the tourist trail, so the location for this is excellent. Almost right on Union Sq, close to every type of transport (BART, bus, tram) and right next to the main shopping centres.
The service was excellent, they looked after our ski equipment (we were heading to Tahoe afterwards) whilst the room was prepared and we were upgraded to a suite free of charge. The room size was fine for the two of us, plenty of storage, comfy bed, flat-screen TVs, decent size bathroom and the extra living space in the suite was great. It was clean and well-maintained.
There is also a bar/restaurant next door which is good but a little overpriced for what it is.
As others have said, the only complaint we had was the noise from outside which impacted our sleep, especially on the Saturday. The windows are old-fashioned sliding style and at least in our room there was a rather large gap between the panes so there was zero sound-proofing, meaning you could hear EVERYTHING from outside - and for some reason SF-ers have a penchant for beeping their car horn at all hours. The nightclub doesn't help, although it is not open every night.
I would stay here again but I would request a room high up and away from the club side, and I would still take ear-plugs!

Room Tip: Away from the nightclub side and high up to avoid as much street noise as possible.

Hotel Abri is a great little hotel. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is close to Union Square- tons of shopping and dining options. The hotel is chic and clean.
TIP= If you plan on staying, request a room away from Ellis Street because there is a Hotel across the street that has a nightclub- Club Infusion- they have a line outside the club and people are yelling and screaming til about 3:30 in the AM.

The hotel is in a great location, near to the BART, union square and the shops. It is a short bus ride to the bay & Fishermans wharf and the staff at the hotel were great with directions and bus stops etc. The rooms were clean but very small with limited wardrobe space, and dark as we had little natural light. The bathrooms are very small and not great for taller people as the fixed shower head was quite low! The hotel is great for a 1/2 night stay but we did start to feel a little claustrophobic on our third night.

Room Tip: Get a room at the front of the hotel for natural light and away from the lift as it can be a little...

This is a very clean and friendly place to stay. It is a couple of blocks from BART (easy to and from SFO) and one block from the Cable Cars. The area is great for shopping and has easy access to all parts of town.

Room Tip: The black out curtains are amazing!!!!! My 14 year old slept until 11 for two of our three nights.

Yeah, it is San Francisco. You're not going to find a big hotel room there, so get over it! Our room was very comfortable, reasonably priced, and uber chic. We had a little difficulty finding it but from the moment we stepped into the lobby it was a great experience. There were comfortable lounge type seating areas, a fireplace, a stylish front desk. The uniformed clerk and valet were helpful and friendly, but not intrusive or creepy. All of the staff was super helpful and gave us good tips on getting around in the city. There wasn't a clueless one in the bunch, including the housekeeping lady! I've traveled a lot and especially in California, that is unusual. We had an inside room that was well appointed and quiet. Two big screen TVs were wasted on us but it was nice to have them there. We went for a Giants baseball game and were able to walk to the stadium and back, and felt totally safe. All in all, it was a wonderful experience and we hope to return soon.
