“This is the nicest boutique hotel in San Francisco”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2009

My wife and I recently spent four nights at the Campton Place Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were celebrating our fifth year anniversary and researched all the fine hotels San Francisco had to offer. We chose the Campton Hotel for its location and reputation. It certainly did not disappoint. Our room was perfect, comfortable bed, large marble bathroom and high ceilings. The staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome at every turn. The general manager had sent up a very nice bottle of champagne about five minutes after we arrived. That's service ! We will be back !

We were celebrating our anniversary and spend 4 nights at the Campton. Our first room was rather small and with very thin walls - but the splendid staff immediately moved us to a better, quieter room. The beds are incredibly comfortable...like sinking into a marshmallow..uummmm - we plan to replicate this at home! The bathroom was large and had a wonderful tub with great bathing products. The location was safe and close enough to all the transportation and attractions.
The Cons would be the charge for in-room coffee and Wi-Fi. Also the bathrooms have no windows and no exhaust fans...these things are available and free at Best Westerns and other less fancy establishments.
However we will certainly look for Taj Hotels in our travels...if nothing else the staff is worth the stay.

With so many top-end hotels to choose from in San Fransisco, our research suggested that the Campton, located about 150 metres from Union Square, would meet our needs and it didn't disappoint. From arrival to check-out, just a great place to stay.

Something we have learnt over the years is that the easier the check-in, the better the hotel. The front desk staff were top notch, the model of efficiency - nothing was too much trouble. The Concierge was very knowledgeable. In fact, all the hotel staff we came into contact with were extremely pleasant and professional.

Our quiet room was exactly as expected with 2 comfortable double beds, quality furnishings and a big TV. An unusual bathroom arangement meant that sliding doors were fitted, something which was not quite as private as usual........ A final point about the room was it's size - just a little cosy for 3 occupants.

On one of the upper floors was an outside gym, covered by a canopy. This overlooks Union Square. Quality equipment, together with water, towels and fruit make for a great treat but didn't make the exercise any easlier!!

The lobby is luxuriously furnished and a very relaxing area to sit and ponder. A small but adequate private area is set aside with complimentary internet access and printers for residents use. The restaurant is just off the lobby but we didn't eat at the hotel, prefering to eat out during our exploration of the city.

A comment for improvement would be the fixing the odd scuff to furnature and fittings, cracked elevator buttons and ensuring the TV works when a guest arrives. Minor stuff really but the management should be on top of these.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay at the Campton.

Stayed here a total of 9 nights over 2 weeks while visiting and vacationing in San Francisco. Overall had a very nice stay. The room cleaning staff do a marvelous job. The food is excellent. The rooms were very nice. And the location and it's proximity to Union Square/shopping is excellent.

Having stayed at the Campton Place for many years while it was still among the greatest of European-style boutique hotels in the U.S., our experience with the hotel under new ownership has ruined it for us. The Taj Hotel group has allowed standards to slip below an acceptable level for a luxury property. The woodwork showed highly visible signs of wear and careless maintenace on almost every floor. The suite we occupied was dilapidated with scars on the woodwork, doors and drawers that no longer closed properly and signs of lapsed attention to detail wherever we looked. Banquette cushions were positioned with the zipper side facing the room instead of the wall. The flowers near the elevator were wilted and the atmosphere beyond the well-appointed lobby felt ill-used and dingy where it had always been immaculate under the old ownership. There were scratches on the interior and exterior of the elevators and one of the two elevators was out of commission for a portion of our shortened stay (we checked out early and took refuge at the Ritz Carlton which was the same price). We also noted that the staff had a poorer attitude and lower level of training than before. Neither was the restaurant the hospitable oasis it had been for so many years. The hostess was very picky about whether we had a reservation and was reluctant to seat us at an available booth when requested. The complimentary breakfast newspapers were no longer present. The service was appallingly slow, but the food was still impeccably prepared and wonderful as it has always been, even if it took forever to get it. While the hotel still has pretensions to being a world class property, first hand experience argues otherwise and we would encourage visitors to choose any other luxury property before risking the type of disappointment we encountered. At premium prices, you deserve a first class experience which ours most certainly was not.

After receiving my confirmation, I called to confirm the type of beds, since there would be 3 of us, including our teenager. I was told that there was a king bed, and if I wanted two double beds, they would need to charge me for a third person - despite the fact that my rate was confirmed for three people, and the website said that the rate included 3 people, regardless of double or king beds. I asked for a supervisor, who was just as confused and mistaken. She said the website rates were incorrect. I finally had to call the front desk of the hotel. The person at the hotel was extremely knowledgeable and gracious and confirmed the correct information.
