“Small room, good location, friendly staff, good price”
Reviewed February 10, 2014

Stayed here for 4 nights in February 2014 and the hotel was nice.
First the staff - very friendly and helpful, The staff in the bar/restaurant was always kind and a good laugh at times. The original restaurant is currently being renovated so they converted one of the conference rooms to a bar/restaurant. Their Clam Chowder was good, sliders a little disappointing, but overall a good place to relax after a days work.
The room was smaller than expected. We stayed on the 22nd floor - with a great view by the way - but there wasn't a lot of space to move about. The bathroom was a bit small, plus there was no ventilation unit in the bathroom, so each time you took a shower, you pretty much tuned it into a sauna, steaming up the mirror and your toiletries.
It was cold in SF when we stayed there and the heating system in the room is interesting - there is a sensor setting, so it only turns on when someone walks past it....
yes, when you go to sleep and it is on 'Sensor' setting, you'll get cold and have to get up and walk to the hallway (where the thermostat is located) to activate it. Call the front desk to get instructions.
Location is very good - next door is a Wells Fargo bank with a Starbucks inside, the California Street tram stops around the corner, and there are lots of great restaurants nearby.
The hotel is not far from Tenderloin which is a dangerous area, so I advise not to go for an evening stroll heading south, unless you really have to.
Overall, a nice hotel, good value, friendly staff.

You made so many great observations! Thank you for mentioning the bar/restaurant staff. I can't wait to pass along your comments. It is interesting how our expectations for bathrooms have changed over the years. Nothing is designed quite the same anymore. I'm happy that the proximity to Starbucks and the cable car met with your approval. The staff here sure enjoy them! Please come back and see us.

I traveled to San Francisco on business, my company arranged my reservation. I was greeted by every employee within ear shot upon my arrival and a bellman was very attentive in gathering my bags. I did have to wait a bit for my room but they upgraded me to a corner room with an amazing view!
The room was well-appointed, and spotless.I had dinner in the on-site cafe and not only was the food excellent, the service was too. The hotel is centrally located, everything you could need is within walking distance and the cable car stops next door.
I will go back a few times a year and look forward to staying in this wonderful hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room. Noise level is up a bit but the view is well worth it!

Now that's a review worth shouting about! I appreciate your thoughts on the service. The chef and bell staff will certainly enjoy hearing them as well. Thank you.

This property is quite nice and handy to local restaurants and bars. It is a little dated but the rooms are of decent size and all the standard amenities are included and functional. Probably the best aspect is the view from almost every room, as the hotel is sited at the top of a hill, both sides of the hotel has a view across San Francisco which is very nice at night. A word of warning, while is might appear to be just a few blocks away from Union Square area, it is quite hilly and not an easy walk especially if you are loaded down with shopping. Public transport is readily available but a short taxi ride (~$8) is probably the best option.

Ooh, great idea on the taxi ride home after shopping. I recommend a cable car or a healthy walk over Nob Hill down to the stores, then an easy ride back with all your bags when feet are tired. Thank you for staying with us.

This hotel is in a great location. It sits near California and one block from Polk street where you can find anything you ever dreamed of, including the cable car start off point. Drinks, shops, clothes food and groceries. Restaurants all around and easy access to everywhere in San Francisco. The service is great and the front desk staff is very helpful. Try and stay back off the street as it can be a little noisy out front. All in all, centrally located, but not a 5 star, but neither is the price. Great place to stay in an expensive city on a budget.

Room Tip: Stay away from the from to avoid the noise from the street

Thank you for such positive feedback. I agree, the Front Desk staff is great. We are also big fans of having Polk Street so close with all its shops and restaurants. You're welcome here anytime.

I almost always stay in this hotel when I visit SF for business. The location is very convenient - it is a short drive to financial district, to North Beach, SOMA and Castro. Recently, Zipcar added a location right in this hotel's garage, which makes it even more convenient if you don't want to rent a car and pay for overnight parking. Cable car turnaround is right outside on the corner for a little touristy experience.
The rooms are always very clean and seems like some rooms were recently renovated.
One thing I really like about this hotel is that you get awesome views from any room on the top floor. One side is facing east and the bay, while the other side is facing west and the Golden Gate.
The only downside is that the restaurant downstairs is mediocre, but being so close to all the best dining in SF, why should you even consider the hotel's restaurant?

Room Tip: Choose one of the top floors. Also, ask for the floor without the vending machines, because those ar...

Thanks for the great idea regarding Zipcar. Not only do we have that service, but also City Car Share which can be booked right in our Gift Shop. Either way, parking in our hotel is free when you use one of those services. We really appreciate your repeat business.

I stayed for a couple nights en route to London. Just for business so did not do the Tourist thing. Check in was efficient. Staff very friendly. Not too much expected being a family hotel. The place is a little tired but very clean. Rooms quite big compared with other Holiday Inns I have stayed in.
Buffet breakfast not up to much but this could have been because there appaired to be renovations going on. I would stay again as it is central to where I have to be in San Francisco.
It is excellent value for money.

Stayed in the Holiday Inn for one night. The bedding is great but the room I stayed in could use some updates (heater and curtains aren't that nice).

The Staff were great! They gave me early check-in which was awesome. Next, I returned to my room around 11pm, I was right beside the elevator (try not to book there) and when I complained about the noise they let me move. The Staff were all super super pleasant and friendly at every encounter, really great service.

Bedding is great, it's nice how they give you the optional of hard or soft pillows.

Location was good. It's not that close, but if you're a runner, you can run all the way down to the Golden Gate bridge (about 15 km round trip). Union Square is maybe 20 minutes walking. It's not the most central hotel, but for the price, it's great.

I started in a room on the 9th floor and there was no ipod dock. My room on the 12th floor did have a dock.

Room Tip: Get a floor that is 12th floor or above.

It's always fantastic to hear about quality service. I'm happy to hear that the Front Desk helped you with an early check-in and changed your room during your stay. You'll be happy to hear that we are replacing all of our A/C units. Next time you stay with us, look for the roll down blackout shade behind the linen curtains. They will block out almost every bit of light! Thank you.
