Holiday Inn San Francisco Golden Gateway
Ranked #77 of 230 Hotels in San Francisco

We only booked this hotel since our other choice was booked for two nights of our stay in SF. We got off the BART system at the Civic Center stop coming from OAK airport and were greeted with LOTS of homeless people and trash everywhere. Obviously not the hotel's fault but its worth mentioning if you chose to get to this hotel via BART.

The Pros: Comfy bed and pillows. Clean. Good shower head with great water pressure. Some friendly staff encountered at the bellhop and the gift shop.

The Cons: Outdated (not one of the nicer Holiday Inns out there), upon check in we were checked in promptly but neither person at the front desk smiled. Rooms are very small and one of the smallest bathrooms I've seen in a hotel.

Overall, this is an okay hotel but if you can spring the extra money, I'd stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: We were on the 20th floor and still heard sirens throughout the night...even with a sound machine. W...

Dear ahardacre,

Thank you for your comments regarding the room and some of the staff. We will certainly investigate and work with the staff that were less welcoming. On a positive note, at the end of this year the hotel will being going through a renovation. Please think about us if you visit the city next year, I am confident you will be pleased with the result.

We stayed at this Hotel during our 16 day tour.
Large hotel located centrally. Public rooms and bedrooms all nice size. Tea making facilities in bedroom, however, no safe. Free wi-fi. The breakfast buffet was adequate, nothing exceptional. Bedroom outside windows very dirty making it difficult to see out, we were told that maintenance work was being carried out. Unfortunately the fire evacuation alarms sounded three time during the night, the last one being at 1.00am. At least we watched the emergency services arrive quickly!. The stay was ok but not the best, we left this hotel feeling tired!. (No apologies from management).Maybe for time being stay at another hotel.

Dear Wonderfree41,

We appreciate your comments. I imagine the fire alarms going off was extremely frustrating. Let me take this opportunity to apologize to you for the disturbance. Thankfully they turned out to be false alarms. I agree with you about emergency services, they arrived quickly and were very professional. Some good news, beginning in December this year, the hotel will begin installing safes in all rooms.

Booked this hotel for a very reasonable rate for the time we stayed Sept 26 - 29. The staff was excellent from bellman to checkin to Aida in the gift shop who is an expert on the transit system - buy your 3 or 7 day pass here. We did not eat in the restaurant but used the gym and laundry which were adequate. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The location of this hotel is really good - just out the door is the California line cable car which is the least busy of the lines, just up the street is Whole Foods which is a good grocery store. One block away is Polk St which has nice restaurants at reasonable prices. I will stay here next time I am in San Francisco and will certainly recommend the hotel to my friends. Previous posters complain about parking rates but from what we saw the rate was actually not bad as this is a very expensive city to have a car in. It is however, a great walking city and the transit system worked well for us.

From the outside, the hotel looks very nice but the inside could use some sprucing up. Upon arrival the front desk staff was very difficult and rude. We didn't get our quoted rate and parking was $40 per night which I thought was ridiculous. The breezeway doors between the parking garage and access to the elevators need your paper parking pass which didn't always work making going in and out very frustrating. The carpeting looked old and worn and very dirty along the walls. The rooms were ok but not great and smelled old and musty. There was mildew on the shower walls and ceiling. My stay would have been even more disappointing if it hadn't been for a very kind and concerned employee named David. He was most helpful and even went out of his way to acquire some robes to use. The hotel restaurant/bar had a nice atmosphere but the food was mediocre. I will probably try a different hotel the next time I visit SF.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 6th floor have easy pool and patio access.

Dear Joye C,

Thank you for your comments. We are very disappointed you experienced these issues when you stayed with us. We will investigate and speak with the associates regarding the service issue you experienced at check-in as well as the room cleanliness. I can certainly understand your comments regarding the cost for parking. While the price seems high, it is appropriately priced for the area. Later in the year we will begin renovating the hotel. I hope you have a chance to return to the hotel to see the improvements.
Please feel free to contact me directly regarding your room rate. I would like to determine why the rate on your reservation was different that what you booked.

Common areas of the hotel were somewhat worn but the rooms were clean and well kept.. Be prepared for long lines if checking in at 4PM. Good central location and both bus and cable car service to Fisherman's wharf within 1 block of hotel. Pricey but decent value for SF stay.

Dear Irene W,

We are happy to hear that your room was clean and well kept. The housekeeper will be pleased to know that. I did notice your comment about the public areas being a bit worn. Happily, the hotel will be going through a renovation at the end of the year which will address that. Please come visit again so you can see the positive changes that are about to occur.

Moderately good hotel. Public transporation at your doorstep. Moderately close to major sights, but not really walking distance to any. Hotel, however is also close to some not-so-nice areas. Rooms reasonably clean. Staff pleasant. Breakfast not included (restaurant menu listed sky-high prices). Parking was $44/night.
I feel that the price of the hotel, when coupled with parking and breakfast charges does not justify a return visit.

Dear Dagesq,

Thank you for your kind comments regarding the staff. I am sorry to hear you felt the hotel was not a good value. I can certainly understand your comments regarding the cost for parking. While the price seems high, it is appropriately priced for the area. I hope you get a chance to visit us again. If so, and depending on whether you are going to use your car while you are here, review the info below to get the best value.

We offer additional benefits that other lots and hotels do not. Upon arrival, we will accept your car as early as 7am. While you're here, we offer in and out privileges 24 hours a day. The car can also be left well after the check-out time of 12 noon, up until 4pm with no additional charge.

There are less expensive parking lots in the area that are open from approximately 7am to 11pm but are closed overnight. They do not offer in and out privlidges so the clock starts ticking everytime you return. If you are just storing your car while you are here, this may be a good option for you.

The hotel is located on one of the main streets through San Francisco, but we didn't really hear any noise once we got up to our room.

Great welcome and check in. Free wifi was an added bonus.

Room was a good size, with a large TV with plenty of channels. It was slightly old fashioned, but was clean and comfortable.

Given the high floor we were on we had great views out across San Francisco from our window.

One word of advice if walking from the BART stop - Powell Street - on the train from the airport - avoid the 'Tenderloin' district if you walk up to the hotel. We tried to tak a short cut through the area and it was a bit dodgy (although no harm done). Instead walk straight up Powell Street and turn left onto California Street - when you get to Van Ness Ave the hotel will be on your left - about a 25-30min walk.

It's a fair walk to either Fisherman's Wharf or Golden Gate Park and beware as there are plenty of hills in San Fran! But it is a central location overall given the attractions in San Fran are fairly spread apart.

There is a Cable Car stop just around the corner from the hotel.

Food/drink wise we ate at several places nearby. Would recommend breakfast at New Village Cafe (great omelettes) or Star Bagels (take away bagels), happy hour drinks at Ti Piacera and dinner at Toast or Sushi Rock. There are also 2 Starbucks v close to the hotel.

Overall good choice for exploring San Fran.
