Holiday Inn San Francisco Golden Gateway
Ranked #75 of 230 Hotels in San Francisco
Reviewed November 27, 2011

We stayed in a room small by American standards, with one king bed, the bed was wider than it was long and took up most of the room! The bath/shower room was separate from the main room but there was no fan in there to extract any steam.

There was a good range of facilities including a coffee-maker (in the wardrobe), fridge, toiletries, iron and ironing board and free wifi (ask reception for the access code, although the internet speed is a bit slow). Reception staff were quick and helpful, just ask if you need teabags!

We bought day travel tickets at the shop which opens at 7a.m. You must pay cash for these. Tell them straightaway if you are buying in advance as the helpful lady immediately started scratching the card for that day (which we did in fact need!). By the bus stop at the bed shop, turning right out of the hotel and across that road you can reach Fisherman’s Wharf (for Alcatraz tours change at the end of the line to Tram F, or walk fifteen minutes, to Pier 33). Cross to the opposite side of the road from the hotel's reception, slightly left, to travel towards the Civic Centre/Union Square by bus number 47.

We were told to avoid the Tenderloin District near the hotel at night (homeless, drug dealers, etc). China Town is within walking distance, although a better option may be to take the California Street Cable Car line ($6 for a single trip or $14 for a one-day pass covering all local public transport): be warned that if you plan to walk it is exceedingly hilly and will take longer than a map suggests (we walked to China Town at night and it was perfectly safe, although it was dark).

Make sure you visit the “crookedest street” Lombard Street, stand on the corner of Lombard and Hyde and watch the cars wind their way down!

Great location and very friendly front office staff. Look for Anthony - he will definitely help, if needed!
Rooms are small and old, however, clean and offering great view!
Will definitely go back!

Stayed 3 night at the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway and I must say that I was surprised with the hotel after reading some reviews. The hotel has a great location next to the cable car stop at California/Van Naess. Bought a 3 day Muni pass which includes all means of Muni transport in the city. The hotel offered at check-in quick and efficient service, and had prepared all the necessary information on communication and restaurants for the area. No need to feel lost. The area is a quieter area with almost non of the homeless people roaming around making you feel uncomfortable. This is indeed the city's biggest problem. The room was a good sized room on the 25th floor with an amazing view over the bay and the city. Taxis were always available. No need to wait. The rate the hotel offer is good compared to some other equivalent hotels in the area. If you need a "4 star" hotel with a good quiet location in San Francisco you should definitely consider the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway.

Room Tip: Spend a little extra money and go for a grand view room for a great view.

What are our needs? We need a place near the San Francisco opera house for under $100 a night. Union Square meets the distance aspect but this time around we couldn't find a hotel that met our price. Bidding on Priceline we found the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway on Van Ness for $90. The Opera House is about .8 of a mile south of the Holiday Inn. You could walk it but it's so easy to grab the #49 bus and be dropped off right in front of the Opera House.

So, about the hotel. I'd call it European boutique. Not fancy. Not drab. Just modern and efficient. The lobby is subdued. No great entrance. Just check in quickly and go to your room. Our room was nicely furnished. Not large, but everything is up to date including a large flat screen T.V. The mini- refrigerator is a nice touch. We found the bed to be one of the most comfortable we've ever slept in. There is a choice of pillows of varying firmness. A surprising asset not common in hotels in central San Francisco is an outdoor swimming pool heated to a comfortable year round temperature. From the pool deck you look east over San Francisco.

The sites that most people like to see while in San Francisco, China Town, Union Square, The Embarcadero, Fisherman's Wharf are 1/2 mile to a couple of miles away. You can walk to them but it's easier to take a bus or a cab. Leave your car parked in the hotel's secure garage. Speaking of secure, access to the rooms is secure. Only guests with a hotel key card can use the elevator to the rooms.

Here's a tip about something that you could easily miss. Van Ness is a very busy street without anything very interesting near the hotel. But walk east one block to Polk. You'll find a lively neighborhood with at least a dozen restaurants to choose from.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a reasonable but nice and secure place to stay in San Francisco, the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway will do right by you.

Room Tip: The best city view is on the east side of the hotel.

My family stayed here for the weekend and nothing spectacular but great location to everything. Cost was a bit high but it is SF so I understand, rooms were nicely kept up and we enjoyed our short visit.

When I checked - in I was enouraged not to have my room cleaned during my stay. That means less water used, fewer staff hours necessary. For me, it meant more germs in the bath, dust in the room, and untidy surroundings. So I opted for the clean room approach, and was happy with it. My room, on floor 22, had a dramatic westerly view of the city. The room also had a fridge and coffee maker. I bought groceries at the Whole Foods market one block away and ate all my breakfasts and one dinner in the room. For amenities the hotel offers meeting rooms and a tiny business center (there's a fee to use the computer except to print a boarding pass), an outdoor pool and deck on floor 6, a restaurant with uncertain hours, and a pub that looks like a meeting room. Elevators are controlled by a key card. If the ice machine is not on your floor, don't forget your key! Parking is steep; like $35/day. The location is on Van Ness (101), a short walk to Union Square in fine weather. You might also walk 1/2 mile west to Fillmore or one block east to Polk for restaurants, boutiques and general shopping. Lafayette Park, dog-friendly and only a few blocks northwest, is a pleasant spot for a short walk and view of the city skyline. You can also walk to the wharf in 25-30 minutes, but the 19 bus on Polk, or 27 on Van Ness are better choices. Conventioneers might feel comfortable here and so might frequent visitors who know their way around the SF streets a bit. But first-timers might feel a bit out-of-the-loop at this non-central location.

Room Tip: the higher the floor, the better the view.

We stayed here for 3 nights and the hotel was ok, the room was standard, the view not spectacular due to the fog, but what we will remember mostly is the hotels high parking cost, 135 USD for the period we stayed. It is indead San Franciso and parking is expensive everywhere. We would advice travellers that start their journey in San Francisco to pick up their car at the rental agency on the day they leave the city, because you don’t need the car in the city at all.
