“Perfect location for exploring SF”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2014

We are a family of four (kids are 13 and 10) and we stayed here for 4 nights in August. Before booking we found it hard to find a decent looking hotel in SF and finally booked this through the British Airways website.
We got the BART from SF airport and then it was about a 10 minute walk to the hotel.
Location: in a word amazing! I don't think we could have picked anywhere better. Union Square is a 2 minute walk from the hotel. You are also right in the heart of the shopping district and close to Macy's, Westfield, Walgreen's (handy for drinks, snacks and lovely fresh fruit) and all the other shops. We walked to most places, but did take the tram to Fishermans Wharf. We also had tickets for baseball and walked down to the AT&T stadium, which took us about 20 minutes.
Our room: we were in a room with 2 queen beds in the old part of the hotel. The beds were lovely and comfy. The room itself was quite small with not too much space for our clothes. We also had no view at all, just a frosted window that faced a wall. However, we don't go to hotels to sit in the room, so it was fine for what we needed.
Breakfast: we had breakfast for 2 included in our price. We were given vouchers, so we just used them for the whole family until they ran out. The breakfast was very nice and service was good. We also ate dinner in the hotel one evening and that was very nice. Again, the service was excellent.
If we were going back to SF we would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of a 3 week road trip around California/Arizona/Nevada. The hotel's location is perfect and very close to cable cars and buses. We had a pleasant surprise upon check-in when we were given vouchers for free breakfast. We had 2 interconnecting rooms in the 'historic' section. These were beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. We requested a rollaway bed and this arrived promptly with no extra charge. The pool is lovely and this was a real bonus in a city centre hotel.

It's the staff that make this hotel really stand out. They cannot do enough for you and special thanks to bellmen Hermie and Victor who looked after our luggage for a few hours after we checked out, and arranged a good deal for us in a Mercedes back to the airport.

We highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Corner rooms in the historic section have 2 windows so are very bright and airy.

We chose the Handlery Union Square for our first visit in San Francisco in august 2014.
The location was perfect to explore SF by bus, by tram our with our legs (even with children) ... and relax even if the weather was pretty fresh ;-)
I just would like to highlight the huge Service oriented mindset of the staff and the Management of this hotel. That's part of the rare place where an important issue for you can find its solution smoothly.
Congrats and thank you again for our pleasant stay among you.

Room Tip: Côté rue (Geary St ou O'Farrell St)

An excellent small hotel, centrally located near Union Square, major and minor specialty stores, and good restaurants. The prices, services, internal dining, and rooms were all satisfactory. We had not anticipated having either a swimming pool or fitness center, but the hotel had both and both were well-used. We strongly recommend getting a room overlooking the pool to avoid the street noise on Geary Street which is one of the busiest streets due to its function as a thoroughfare and proximity to theaters. We travel to the City frequently to visit friends and family and, if we don't choose to stay in Tiburon to avoid the traffic and parking problems of the City, we will certainly return to The Handlery. Oh, the highlight of the hotel is its concierge desk, could not be more helpful.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the pool.

My Wife and I arrived here on Honeymoon on 4th August staying for 3 nights.
We had a long flight so we were just looking forward to getting to the room to drop off our bags then explore.
Check in was easy and quick with a very pleasant concierge.
We were also personally greeted by the Hotel owner as he wanted to welcome us personally for choosing his hotel for our Honeymoon. This was a lovely touch which started our stay of to a very good start. The champagne on ice waiting in the room was a nice surprise.
The hotel is in an art deco style which I have always liked and the location is perfect for Union square and the shopping.
Even Fishermans Wharf is only a 20-30 minute walk away.
The only down side I can think off is that it can be a little noisy outside at night but that is not the Hotels fault and they are even kind enough to provide you with earplugs that do the trick.
My only regret is that we only stayed here for 3 nights. If we ever return to San Francisco (which we hope to do) this hotel will be top of our list.
Great job, Thank you.

A real gem in downtown San Francisco. No much else to say as other reviewers did the job. It's true that the area is noisy so that's why I was offered a interior room (I checked in early). Staff at front desk was very helpful and efficient and our room was spacious enough, clean and fresh.
The whole experience at the hotel was great and this wasn't our first time in SF although I always have booked my hotel in downtown. So far the best value I've found, I'll come back to this hotel on my next trip.

I spent only 2 nights at the at the "Handlery Union Square Hotel". It's situated only 2 minutes away from Union Square and that's absolutely amazing, as it allows you to around and reach the most important touristic attractions in a few minutes. The staff at the reception and at the restaurant is nice and polite. Breakfast was included and good, and you have to order it at the table (no buffet). If on one hand this is more comfortable and elegant, on the other can make you waste a little bit too much time if the restaurant it's too busy, thing that happened to my friends and not to me directly.
The negative element of this hotel is that the rooms are too tiny. The three rooms that my friend and I used ( two doubles and in a double for three people), it was hard to find out where and how to open the bags and moving around it was pretty impossible.
Despite the rooms size, I'd strongly suggest this hotel for its fantastic position but for longer stays, where more time in the room might be required as well as bigger bags, I might suggest either to consider another place or to strongly request of a bigger room (if there is any).
