“Great stay despite the unfriendly staff”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

Hotel was recommended by a friend who understands our tastes in hotels. Booked through bookit for a special rate. The woman who checked us in reminded us in a condescending manner that we booked through bookit and could ONLY have one double bed. We knew that. It was just my husband and I. The room was adequate, very clean and fresh, nicely furnished with all the amenities we expect. Unfortunately the view was of rubble. Didn't really matter to us because we spend very little time in our room. And I wouldn't have mentioned it if chekcing in wasn't a little embarrassing because of the woman's innecessary remarks. If you must depend on the concierge then you may very well be in trouble. The one concierge who was on duty while we visited (April 18, 2013) was absolutely awful. Being our first visit to San Francisco, we had questions. He appeared very annoyed anytime we had to approach him. The evening concierge was much friendlier but neither offered any additional information like in other hotels. On the day we checked out, we laughed as we talked about asking the concierge for some last minute information. This was our lucky day! The concierge who was on duty, had been on vacation. He was truly the professional! Not only did he answer our questions, but gave us such detailed information about heading to Napa and visiting Napa...our next destination. Guess what? This concierge actually had maps to share! His expertise and professionalism has convinced us to return to the hotel.

Room Tip: If you book through an outside agency, accept what you are entitled to. Rate is always better. Roo...

We had been spoilt with luxurious accommodation in Las Vegas, and so our expectations were high. We drove up to the front of the hotel to be stopped by a policeman advising there was no stopping for virtually the entire block! Fortunately, the door man came out as we were about to leave and directed us around to the rear of the hotel where the parking was. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful throughout our stay. Our room was in the old section of the hotel and we found the room to be ''tired'' and cramped, although it was very clean. We could easily hear the people in the room next door which continued late into the night. There was only one small bathroom and a second hand basin in a cupboard - which was odd but handy! The house maids stuff the pillows into the pillowcases until they become the size of cushions! One night, it got the better of me and I called room service asking for more pillows. It wasn't until afterwards that I realised the ''cushions'' were actual pillows! The Union Square location was handy but as we have kids, I think next time we will stay at Fisherman's Wharf where there is more to do for the them.

Just returned from a week here, the hotel certainly met all our expectations for this price range of hotel. I cannot say it was the best as that is subjective in so many ways, however this hotel did not disappoint in any way and we would certainly stay here again. The room was very clean and spacious, we had a premier king room overlooking the pool. Yes, there is street noise, but less so in this part of the hotel. The trade off for the noise is the excellent central location, from which we walked everywhere, including up Knob Hill and over to Fisherman's Wharf. Great sports bar next door.

Room Tip: Inside rooms are quieter, and some rooms have a view of the wall next door.

Got a great deal through Travel Zoo - room was not big but clean and comfortable ~ complimentary Wifi always nice. Great location near Union Square, close to many stores and restaurants. Very cool old style restaurant (The Daily Grill) on site - we just had cocktails at the very nice bar as kitchen had closed but menu looked decent. Staff at both the hotel and restaurant were very friendly and helpful. Overall very good - would stay again.

Stayed here for 3 nights. On first night no sleep as room at front if hotel . Complained about noise at 3am . Staff offered straight away to change room. Not a new problem for them. Found staff very helpful but would not stay here again . Spoilt 3day city break as had to change rooms , and did not then feel settled . Restaurant food good , but felt like second class as had coupons for breakfast included in price. Shame as could have been very good . Very surprised no double glazing to front. Of hotel .

Room Tip: Specify room at back. Front rooms very noisy all night

I selected this hotel, because it had great reviews. The hotel is actually two buildings, back to back, one new and one old. I am sure that the rooms in the new section are quite nice, but our stay in the old building turned into four nights from hell. I specifically reserved a room with two beds and made sure I explicitly emphasized this in my reservation notes, as we were unrelated adults. When I came to the room, there was only one queen bed. I went back to the front desk and, even though they were nice to me, they basically said that they are sold out and cannot do anything about it. Then they said that they can add a bed, but this was a fold-out, terribly uncomfortable, ridiculously basic, bunk. Whoever would sleep on it would not get any sleep at all. Then they moved us to another room. When I entered, it smelled so strongly, that I have never experienced such smelly hotel room. It was a mix of urine smell from the street and who knows what else. The windows did not seal at all and were banging, as if someone is knocking loudly on the window (search on youtube for "Hell at Handlery"). The noise from the street was unbelievable, as if we were on the ground level, with windows open (also posted to youtube). At 5am someone decided to scream from the top of his lungs for five minutes, the streetcar bell was unbearable. I am uploading this on youtube, as it is difficult to describe. Keep in mind that the videos were taken with the windows shut as best as possible and latched. The staff refused to switch us into another room. I tried to find a different hotel, but by then everyone was sold out, except for rooms that were $400 per night. I had important meetings to go to, needless to say I was a zombie and I had a perpetual migraine, because I was woken up a dozen times at night by street noise. One would think that if the staff messes up a reservation, they would at least put the guests up into a decent room, and not shove them into a ridiculously sub-standard accommodation, while still having them pay over $200 per night. Well, they were nice enough to suggest that we use ear plugs if the noise is bothering us.

Very Good overall experience, small but comfortable and clean room, excellent staff and most of all excellent location. Very convenient next door B/L/D and cocktails restaurant "The Daily Grill".
Bus stop across the street and half block from cable car (Powell And Hyde).
