“Nice rooms, not so nice staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2013

My family and i (2 adults and 2 children) stayed at the Handlery for 2 nights as part of a multi-centre holiday. This was the beginning of our trip and first impressions of the hotel were very good. The bell boys were very helpful but unfortunately check-in wasn’t as smooth as hoped. There was a ‘mix up’ and they handed us 2 vouchers for breakfast when there was 4 of us. At first they said the information on the computer said 2 only and they were not going to provide us with 4 meals, however after some discussion it was decided that the hotel can invoice our travel agent (Virgin Holidays) for the ‘extra meals’. Can I also point out that the staff had never heard of Virgin Holidays???

When we eventually got to the room we were impressed with the size, i.e. plenty room for 4, a nice TV, hot drink facilities etc… Our room was clean and fresh with a rear facing room and overlooked more rooms so there wasn’t much of a view but we didn’t spend much time in the hotel anyway. Some people have mentioned the city noise during the night, we managed to sleep all the way through without any disturbances.

As part of our holiday we were celebrating my son’s 9th birthday and asked staff at reception if it was possible for the Daily Grill staff to give him a mention and say happy birthday to him during our breakfast, this would make his first day in San Fran that little bit more special. They said to mention this to the restaurant staff on arrival so we did. Once we were seated drinks and food were ordered and we waited for our breakfast. My wife asked for a glass of water while we were waiting and the man pointed out that he was the manager of Daily Grill but will still get the water. There was very few tables occupied but seemed to be allot of staff. Our food arrived with no mention of my son’s birthday yet…. We ate our meal and still no mention…. And guess what no water either. I asked another staff member for a glass of water and she looked at me and ignored me as she was not the waitress for our table. I asked our waitress and she did not bring the water either. By this time we were finished our breakfast and drank our coffee. I politely asked to speak to the manager to regarding this and he admitted he had forgotten to bring the water and apologised for not mentioning my sons birthday, we accepted his apology and left. I found that the attitude of the staff was very unfriendly and unhelpful however the manager was more polite but had clearly forgotten about his customers.
You couldn’t fault the hotel location as its literally on Union Square.

Check-out went smoothly but I’d like to say due to the issues with the unhelpful staff at the Daily Grill and “mix-up” at check-in I will not be staying at the Handlery again.

We really enjoyed our time at the Handlery. Our King Suite was in the historic part of the building and the room itself was huge, lovely and well appointed. We found the housekeeping and front desk staff extremely friendly and helpful. We did have noise issues during the night with the drummer down the street and some time of metal banging around 3 am but the noise did not dampen our enthusiasm for the hotel. Location of the hotel was perfect for our needs.

We have just returned from a trip to San fransisco and what a lovely city it's just as you would expect it to be and majority of the people are friendly. Everything is accessible and within easy reach, only bad thing was the hotel.....

The staff on the front desk didn't seem to care much or they are seriously overworked and doing too many long hours. If you are after a peaceful sleep you will not get it here all you hear is the traffic and the bustle of the city streets which at 3 am is not something you would like to hear necessarily, not to mention if you end up in room 652 you will hear your neighbours conversations and tv so when rather are talking or watch loud tv til 430 it's not the best. As a tip I would put the chain across the door on the evening and out the do not disturb sign on the door as the maids did on both mornings knock on the door and 830 although the one did wait a while to give me chance to get to the door unlike the other which if it weren't for the key chain would have walked in on me getting dressed!

I visited the hotel for one week for a Convention in San Francisco. I think that the location of the hotel is a must because all the public transportation (Metro, buses, railway), beautiful Union Square and most of the important shops are nearby. I took a single bedroom in the old part of the hotel, and even was a small bedroom, was quite neat and clean. Maybe it's not quite noise isolated, as my neighbor decided to watch TV at 5AM and was heard all. In terms of service, the front desk is always busy, you always have to wait for any request. Unfortunately, they're not always willing to give a fast response or solution to your requests.

An excellently, centrally located hotel with friendly, welcoming staff and good food (Daily Grill). Complimentary breakfast was a bonus. Only a couple of minus points. After giving our name to the restaurant manager one morning, we were subsequently overlooked and he had to be reminded that we were still waiting to be seated. To his credit, his apologies were profuse and sincere. While we too had chosen a 'historic' street view room, and although noise is not usually a problem for us anywhere, the old draughty, single-glazed sash windows did nothing at all to eliminate the incessant nightly cacophony from the resident busking drummer at the corner of Geary & Powell. All-in-all though, a good place to stay for easy access to all the sights (and sounds!) of San Francisco.

The great aspect to this hotel is the location. It is in Union Square so it is within walking distance to the convention center and to the BART Station and cable cars, etc.
The hotel staff is friendly. The room was nicely decorated with desk and couch in room.
I would suggest an interior room. At first, I did not like having a room without a street view, but it is MUCH MORE quiet. Slept well.

Couple things I did not like: 1. Hallways/corridors looked quite dated with carpet, wallpaper, and dim lights. The halls did not match the rooms. 2. What's the purpose of a business center that charges you to use the internet on the computers and charges for printing. Pretty cheap considering internet is free elsewhere in the hotel. Really, what's the point of charging if it is free everywhere else. I understand charging when printing a bunch of paper, but I can't print out my boarding pass without being charged?

Overall, a very decent hotel.

Stayed here recently with my 2 sons. The hotel is very nice, in an excellent location. The staff were very helpful. Especially the concierge who gave excellent advice to my sons re cycling trips over the Golden Gate Bridge. The staff were always pleasant and could not do enough. There is a restaurant belonging to the hotel that serves excellent food and again is very good service.

You are just around the corner from the famous cable cars and whilst you might have to wait a bit it is definitely worth it. Would recommend this hotel to anyone and would definitely stay there again.
