“Old but location is worth it!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

yes the hotel is old and cramped but the beds were comfortable even though they are small for a double. The location is the best. The staff were fantastic, and best of all the breakfast was included in the price, and the restaurant is so fantastic- great! The restaurant is popular as it has a good reputation. Around the corner from the hotel is an Italian cafe/restaurant the only place we saw all holidays that had salad on display- and they were fantastic. Also struggled for two weeks trying to get a decent coffee and this place knows how to make coffee- got to love Italians for coffee! We ate there often. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants location service and a decent bed- but not for those who want a showcase room to sleep in. My daughter did wonder if the place was haunted! but I can tell you no bumps in the night! Just happy snoring!

As all the reviews state this is a prime location. You're right in the heart of Union Square and Union Square is a cool place to be. I don't recommend staying in Fisherman's Wharf, some of the hotels are in kind of no mans land locations and it's really easy to just shoot down there in a cab and spend the day there. Union square is cool to base yourself for bars, restaurants and shops.

If you go for Union Square stay at the Handlery. It's nothing special or amazing, San Fran in general isn't cheap, but you get clean and comfortable rooms and if you're up and touring all day and most of the night, you don't need a breathtaking room.

We got upgraded to a huge room in the historic section which was pointless as we were a couple. Now I must say our room was in a terrible location. You could hear floors creak, weird mechanical noises going all night (I find relaxing, some find irritating) and because the window was so close to the next building (we were on the side), they were glazed over and they only let in light. The room itself was nice, large, well kept, but try ask for a room at the front or go for the premier section. I am not fussy at all with rooms, we were fine, but being a travel agent I know this may put people off. Don't avoid staying there, they have heaps of rooms, it's a great location, just asked to be moved or located in a better area.

If you're not fussy, don't want luxury and are people who spend little time in the room, then definitely go for the Handlery, the location is awesome.

Room Tip: Try to get to the front of the hotel or upgrade to the premier section. Try get a view and a room wi...

This hotel is very central to central city shops and transport, particularly the Cable Cars to Fishermans Wharf. The hotel has loads of character and the service is great. Avoid the Historic Rooms at the front of the Hotel facing Geary Street, The windows are single glazed and Geary St is very noisy at night because of the Street performers and their drums, then street cleaning in the very early hours of the morning

This hotel is perfectly situated. Just a couple of steps to Union Square, the pickup point for some tours and a stop for the 'Hop on-Hop off bus'. Our room was so comfortable, and with double glazing, street noice was not a problem. A little noise from the garbage collectors in the wee hours, but to be expected in a city location. So handy to restaurants, cable cars and easy walk to Chinatown. Complimentary breakfasts were delicious, and a great start to the day. Tip for AirNZ Airpoints members - this hotel can be paid for using airpoints, brilliant.

This hotel is in a fantastic position being only a stones through from the action of union square. Having stayed there in December before Christmas it was magical going and sitting with a cup of coffee in union square and watching the lights, ice skating rink and other attractions at your doorstep. As for the hotel you really get for what you pay for which is the location. The rooms were clean and well appointed without standing out. Check in was quick but we were asked if we wanted a room facing the street or the back of the hotel. Being our first time in San Fran we decided on the street view and that was a big mistake. I am not a "precious" person and can handle a bit of noise but the amount that came into our room was crazy! We were awoken multiple times in the night from cars, trucks, people etc. For location you will be hard pressed to find a better hotel for the price but don't expect anything really stand out.

The Handlery was well positioned within easy access to Union Square, Macy's and hop on hop off sight seeing buses. Complimentary breakfasts were served at the Daily Grill next door - the food and 1940s atmosphere were brilliant!
The rooms were well appointed, but charging mobile phones and cameras proved difficult - not really sure why.
The staff were knowledgeable and very helpful. A really good old fashioned place to stay.
