Handlery Union Square Hotel
Ranked #70 of 230 Hotels in San Francisco
Reviewed June 15, 2012

The Handlery is located in the heart of San Francisco within sight of Union Square. The hotel is actually housed in two buildings divided by a center courtyard with a pool. Parking is behind the hotel on O'Farrell Street. If you have a lot of luggage pull up at the hotel entrance on Geary and let the bellhop take it inside, then drive around the corner and park in the parking garage which is clearly marked. Our room was a suite with a separate living area including a sofa (sleeper), a coffee bar, flat screen TV, and small refrigerator. The bedroom had a kingsize bed and another flat screen TV. There was no view whatever....we looked out on a wall. I complained to the front desk and they were very accomodating and offered to move us to a large corner suite with a view of Union Square.....but beware....these front rooms come with a price....noise! From what I could tell there are no double pane windows and you will put up with road noise and in our case....noise from demonstrators across the street. But it is San Francisco so how much time will you actually spend in the room! WiFi is free, there is a restaurant and room service which we did not use. Foley's Irish Pub is right behind the hotel on O'Farrell Street and there are Starbucks on nearly every corner.

Stayed at the Handlery Hotel for 3 nights. Check in was quick, staff were all very friendly and very helpful. Room was clean, bed was comfortable and wasn't overly large, but quite sufficient for 2 people, and plus, we spent very little time in there as there is so much to see and do in the city. Couldn't wish for a better location. Located right in Union Square, it is steps to the cable cars, (which was a great way to get around) , tons of shopping, and many fantastic restaurants. If using the cable cars, buy a passport to get on and off. For 3 days, it cost $21.00 and you can ride as many times as you like. A one way fare is $6.00, so the passport is a great value. We also took the BART train from the airport . Very easy to find and very straight forward. It was $8.10 for the trip into the city. It stops within a block of Union Square and is a 5 minute walk to the hotel. Sure beats the expensive cab ride plus the tip you usually give. All in all, a fantastic 3 day holiday and would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone travelling to this gorgeous city.

Dear Wandahtc,
It was great to have you come down from the beautiful city of Calgary. I am happy you found our accommodations met your expectations and that you enjoyed our perfect location for all your sightseeing needs. The Passport is an ideal way to get around the city. Thanks again for staying at the Handlery.

It is easy to find and the staff is kind and welcoming. The rooms are priced accordingly and are clean. I had a view overlooking Geary Street and I loved seeing the city action every night. Hotel Frank is right across the street from Handerly and every morning you will hear protesters boycotting because Hotel Frank doesn't care to treat employees fairly and supply them with contracts. I'm giving a 5 because I am overlooking that the water pressure in the shower was not that great... but PLEASE -- how long are you expecting to stay there? It's a great place and I would stay at Handerly again!

Dear BostonLaBoheme,
It was great to have you come all the way from Beantown and see that you enjoyed your visit to the City by the Bay and our hotel. I wish I could do something about the protesters across the street but I have not been successful at this point in time. Thank you again for staying at the Handlery.

Stayed here for 3 nights on a friends recommendation. Great location for shopping dining etc. Cable cars and double decker tour buses at square on the end of the block. Very helpful and friendly staff....just ask and they will help. We stayed in the old section of hotel so rooms had a lot of character..tall celings, big baseboards, layers of paint on the trim. Nicely furnished and clean. Looked better than new section.

This hotel is in a great location close to all the shopping and restaurants around union square. Our room was large and had everything required. We stayed on the 7 th floor in an inwards facing room and couldn't even hear any street noise. Friendly staff.

"Wow, what a location. We could not have picked a better location for our hotel and to celebrate our 29th anniversary. Very close to top end department stores, Union Square, pubs and any type of food you want all are within walking distance. Easy walk to public transportation. We stayed in room 457 which was large enough for the two of us with extra room to spare. Room and bath were very clean and updated with fresh paint and wallpaper. Not much of a view from the window but that was fine because we left the room each day around 9AM and returned around 9 PM. We were looking for a clean place to sleep and found it. When we arrived we were asked if we wanted city view or a room with less noise; we chose less noise. I loved the glass door knobs and the little vent on the bathroom door. We would chat with one of the bellmen each morning on our way out. I failed to get his name but he was most helpful with suggestions for the day. He was an older gentleman and was most often at the outside door at the sidewalk. We would stay at this hotel again if we visit San Francisco again."

Great location...
Professional, friendly staff...
Clean, comfortable rooms...

We spent six nights at the Handlery in May 2012 and from the time we stepped out of the shuttle through to departing was a very positive experience for our family. On arrival we were upgraded to a larger room to accomodate our family. Jeffery on the front desk was so friendly and welcoming, as was all the staff that we encountered during our stay. The convienence of having the Daily Grill located was a bonus. Considering the location we heard little noise, however when staying in a city and a location such as the Handlery we expected some noise anyway. The Handlery made our stay in San Francisco a positive one and if in San Fransico again we will stay at the Handlery again.
