“Nice Location!! Friendly Staff!!”
Reviewed July 20, 2014

The Great Highway Inn was recommended to us by a friend familiar with San Francisco. We were looking for something a little bit different. Not just your ordinary chain hotel. This foot the bill!! Nice Location with easy access to all of our needs. Loved the closeness to the beach!! Room and amenities were average but considering what you get in San Francisco for the price we were pleased.

We were in San Francisco during Pride week, so the hotel and vacation rental choices were slim to none. After checking it out on the web, we booked the Great Highway Inn. A family of 5 (3 teens) had great accommodations, including a separate bedroom. The unit was clean, but dated, like an older 1960's style hotel. Everything worked well, the rooms were big, and the beds were comfortable. There are no elevators, so if you don't like stairs, be sure to stay on the lower floor. We are fine with stairs, so we stayed on the 3rd floor, and had an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean! The front desk clerks were extremely friendly, and although we did not have a car, the parking is free. The location is super, and we were right on the transit route. San Fransisco has an amazing transit system, and we used it during our whole stay. The area is undergoing a bit of adjusting, and I'm sure it will soon be gentrified. Golden Gate park is right next door, and it is a fantastic park. Be sure to use caution at night, as it is the place where many of the many homeless sleep. We had no trouble, they just left us alone, but there are some trouble spots in the area, as in most big cities. There was a grocery store handy to the hotel, a gas station, and quite a few restaurants.

Great Highway Inn doesn't aspire to resort-style amenities, but does excel at the essentials: Clean, safe, comfortable lodging with good service (including free WiFi that averaged 6+ Mbps, which is more than many tonier places give you.) It's in the middle of a long-term renovation project, but even the older section, where I stayed, was in perfectly functional shape. Location is great, a short walk from several good restaurants and coffee places, as well as the N-Judah light rail for easy trips downtown -- and of course the beach is right across the street. On-site parking is free and easy.

Room Tip: 3rd-floor rooms give you a bit of an ocean view (if you don't mind the lack of elevator.) Also n...

We've stayed at this hotel twice now, for our child with UCSF Hospital visits. We've tried quite a few hotels over the past few years & this one we know we can count on. They have booked our family & my mother in rooms right next to each other on ground level for our child's wheelchair which I think is very kind & thoughtful. It is also very nice for a family to have our car right outside our door. We feel safe in our hotel, however I would not recommend walking around too much. A coffee shop is down the street but since the street has free parking people live in their cars. Sad & uncomfortable walking back to your room with coffee & doughnuts, but if you have a few extra dollars you could bless someone with some breakfast :)
The beach is nice, just literally across the street. Only disappointment was we could hear anyone talking outside. Kindof hard when you have to have enough sleep for the long day ahead of you.
If my husband & I were to visit SF for a different reason, we would be more care free & not worry about the noise. Rooms very clean & consistent. VERY thankful for this hotel

Friendly people to greet you. The place could use a little updating, but clean. Great location. Across the street from the ocean. Next to Golden Gate Park. The next block is the end of the N Judah subway. Easy way to get to Union Square and other restaurants.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for a night while my son 's at UCSF Medical Center. It's a 20-mins drive from the hospital, good parking space, nice. comfy room, with small ref and microwave oven. The surrounding area is quiet and is closed to the beach.
We enjoyed our stay in this hotel, we were relaxed and had a very good, sound sleep during the night.

Room Tip: I always get 2 queen beds, more space for me and my husband
