The Hyatt had a major renovation a few years ago and the rooms are now SO much nicer: very comfy beds, great views from the higher floors, and electronics to delight everyone. There's a large, built-in flat screen TV, lots of desk space, and bedside buttons to raise and lower the window shade. What I really appreciated was the LED reading lights on each side of the bed. The bathroom, too, received a facelift: ample lighting around the large mirror and a new, 21st century sink with nice amenities (even toothpaste!) Of course, the location is the best: right on Union Square. Even the lobby is more user-friendly. This hotel does tend to be crowded due to conferences, etc. but we weren't bothered by any noise. Didn't try the restaurant. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Higher floors facing east offer a great view of the city.

I stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms with a gorgeous view and loved it. The room was really well appointed and very well designed. The restaurants and room service were all excellent, as was housekeeping. (One thing: One evening I had to cross a picket line to get into the hotel. Apparently Hyatt does not have a great record on paying and supporting its housekeeping staff, which is very disappointing, as I am a fan of the Hyatt brand.) If you have a car, the parking is very expensive in downtown San Francisco, but the valet parking is exorbitant. So, park at the Sutter Street structure catty corner from the hotel. It's easy and will save you a little money. The location could not be better. It is one block up from Union Square and three from the entrance to Chinatown. Shopping, restaurants, and the cable car are all nearby. On top of all this, I got a great price at the last minute! Would definitely stay here again.

Dear mvictoriap,

Thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed the remodeled guestroom and sounds like you had a great time exploring all the attractions in San Francisco! We appreciate your concern for our associates and the opportunity to set the record straight. Hyatt values its associates and their well-being - a big part of why the average tenure for a Hyatt housekeeper in the U.S. is more than 12 years and many of our hotels have been voted as a 'best place to work' by associates. If you are interested to learn more, please visit our Hyatt Workplace webpage.

Your business is truly appreciated and we look forward to welcoming you back soon!
Sincerely yours,
Tiffany

I spent three nights recently at this hotel on a weekend trip and I think the best thing going for this hotel is the location. I was able to quickly get wherever I wanted in the city either walking or taking public transit. While it is not in the central business district it is probably an ideal spot for business travel. I'm not sure I would call it ideal for families since the fisherman's warf and the other core touristy areas are a bit further then some of the more business locations. Also while the area is full of people at night and relatively safe there are a good amount of homless people around. Still, everywhere in the city was realtively easy to get to and I would not have had such easy access to all the areas had I staid in the northern end of the city. There are also a lot more stores and coffee shops then in the main business distrct. Chinatown is also walking distance.

The hotel is very nice as others have stated on here. The hotel rooms are very modern feeling and clean. The front desk was a tad confusing- its more of a computer kiosk now then an actual traditional front door. The staff was very helpful and polite. The only person who gave me some issue was the curt individual when I went to get my luggage out of storage to leave.

Overall this hotel is very well updated, has enough around it to give you something to do at night, and provides quick access to other parts of the city. It isn't the best for families with small children since there is a small sketchy element and the touristy spots require a trolley ride to get to.

Nice city hotel. A bit of a rushed feel to it. The lobby is lovely and though there was an attempt to make it cozy it is still a bit sterile. The rooms were adequate, as was the service. With one exception. There was one consierge who just was so UNHELPFUL. She wasn't unfriendly, just businesslike. But more importantly she just would not listen at all. Everything I tried to ask for directions, suggestions, anything at all she would try and finish my sentence and assumed she knew what I wanted. And the thing is - she didn't!! I finally left the desk and came back when she wasn't there.

The Grand Hyatt at Union Square has one of the great locations for people visiting for work or play. It's a short walk to the Moscone Center complex South of Market and in the heart of the Union Square shopping district. The only problem during the past few years was that the hotel felt trapped in a time warp of the early 80's. The rooms were dark - the lobby (unfriendly) and the lack of a casual place to eat or drink would make one wonder if this truly was a Hyatt.

All of this has been changed with the recent modernization program. The rooms are now decorated in a fresh, contemporary style. It's electronics friendly - one can even plug a computer into the large wall-mounted flat screen. The bathrooms are better lit, too! The lobby is much improved - not a place to spend great amounts of time, but finally one can meet and have a conversation comfortably. The new "open" desk registration area seemed much more efficient and the staff was friendly and incredibly fast at processing our requests.

On the mezzanine, the new restaurant and bar were above expectations - not a bargain - but, the food was certainly equal to the price!

From a style/charm perspective, its unfair to call this a sterile hotel as a criticism. It's a Hyatt - it's amenities and services are consistent with the level of other major chains: no more, no less. Because it's large, it is very likely one can find a great rate through the major travel sites - and relative to the other hotels on Union Square, a cut above.

Room Tip: Higher floors on the South and West sides of the building have great views.

Stayed 4 nights in this hotel . There was an ongoing conference in the hotel during that time so the place tends to be crowded in the lobby most of the time . I liked the location, which is very central , with the Union Square ( with many shops and restaurants) just literally a 1-2 minute walk from the hotel doorstep .I also liked the spacious rooms , well designed and presenting state of the art amenities, such as an interactive huge LED TV , which has a separate control pad , and the nice button control for the curtains. Beds are comfortable, lighting is good, although the bathroom is not that elegant (except for the basin ). Reception and the check in proceedings go smooth, the female front desk staff Jaze is friendly and so was Yena , who helped me secure my loss Hyatt Passport #. There are 3 great services that they offer 1) the complimentary drinking water (they have a dispenser ) provided beside the ice machine at every floor and 2) and the offer to provide needed amenities such as toothbrush , shaving cream, razor etc if needed. 3) the free wireless internet (but not that very fast at times ). Regarding the room by the way, I noticed the sound of the gushing wind although i can't say if the room was soundproof or not considering i was not disturbed by the voices of fellow guests during my stay there . i am not impressed by the breakfast buffet selection , the only thing i liked was the strawberries included , and the service by the coffeeshop staff headed by Danny. This hotel is indeed beautiful , and pictures may not be enough for the proper description . i would also like to commend the bell staff Jurgen and Angelito . Even the westin st francis and marriott present something more central in location , based on the services and facilities offered , i would still choose this hotel , and that is inspite i don't like the treatment (sarcastic ) I got from the male front desk staff when i checked out. For travellers out there , if you want points credited to your membership card ( Accor, Gold Passport , Marriott Rewards etc ) , don't book through Agoda, Expedia or travel agent , they won't credit it , even you paid it with your own buck . And last thing , have breakfast at the famous diner outlets in union square instead of the coffeeshop or starbucks (just in front of hotel ), you won't regret it.

Room Tip: higher floors give better views

Recently modernized 70's era high rise near Union Square. Easy, hill free, walking to shops, Fishermans Wharf , Chin Town and Financial District. Rooms modern and functional. Good aircon. Showers, beds comfortable.

Pros- No hills to climb . Rooms bright and modern. Conveniently located at foot of Nob Hill next to Union Square shops and restaurants. Mark and Joanna friendly concierges who can advise on restaurants, sightseeing.

Cons - A convention hotel. Short on character and warmth. Wait for elevators can get tiresome if there's a large group staying. Restaurant small - gets crowded at breakfast. No store in the hotel so you have to go a couple of blocks to Walgreens for water. Surprisingly no turndown service.

Sum up : $500 a night reasonable by SF standards. Everything clean and efficient. Has the sterile feeling of a hotel run by accountants. Certainly a Hyatt but not a Grand Hyatt. Probably wouldn't stay here again although we're great fans of the Hyatt brand.

Room Tip: Choose a high room. Avoid rooms next door to service stairs - swinging doors can be annoying. Corner...
