“Great location and newly renovated”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

Up-to-date hotel with great rooms. I was on the 30th floor and had a spectacular view of the Macy's and the city. The bar on the 36th level was also affordable and gave us a great view of the Bay. It even had live music on Thursday night. I stayed there for 4 nights and would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for something central in San Francisco. You can't really beat the location of this Union Square hotel. The light and curtain switchs next to the beds was for sure appreciated and the bathroom offers a big sink. Everything was great.

Our two night stay at the Grand Hyatt was at the tail end of a two week family vacation in Nevada and California. We have stayed in Hyatt hotels in the past (in fact, this was our third Hyatt property on this vacation) and it was truly amazing. Very well located, very modern, well staffed (and friendly). Our room faced the bay, and we were about 2/3 of the way up the tower, so THAT was a pleasant surprise. The room was big enough for all four of us (two adults and two pre-teens).

Only complaint (and it's a minor one) - based on the price that we paid for this hotel, would it kill them to offer complimentary wireless internet access? (One of the other two Hyatt's that we stayed at on this trip also wanted payment for wireless). That aside, we'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

Dear JM D,

Thank you for your great review and thank you for choosing Hyatt hotels for your vacation! We are delighted you enjoyed our newly renovated rooms. Our internet fee is comparable with other hotels in the area and we feel we provide good value. However, that is not how you feel and for that we are truly sorry. We hope to welcoming you back again in the near future!

Best regards,
Tiffany

We visited San Francisco for 1 week in September. The hotel is just newly renovated and in the lobby there is still some wok going on but didn't effect us at all. We got a room upgrade to the 20th floor with a view over Union Square which was great. Rooms always clean, concierge was extremely helpful and stunning view from the bar on the 36th floor. The weather was nice, around 20-24 degrees but can get cold at night due to breeze.

Grand hotel, with central location, good service, renovated rooms, clean but why oh why did they not renovate the windows...noise is awful and for the price and brand, this is not acceptable.
Pros: great location right near union Sq but not on the cable car roads. Stunning views from the restaurant. Good service overall (top marks for their conceirge).
Rooms are nicely appointed and good sized bathroooms. Clean overall (lobby was being renovated so cannot comment on what it will end up as, but they dealt OK with that)

Con's: check in does not match the ticket. Book a room get another lottery seems to be the order of the day. Checkin staff smile away but don't seem to care, no doubt heard it all before...
Worst part is the noise. Now we were up on or near 25th floor, so I hate to think what it was like down below. The windows are single glazed so you could hear pretty much everything happening below. Why do you renovate a place and forget to put in some serious sound proofing ont he windows??
reason is perhaps what lets this hotel down the most. They've got a great brand, a great location and want to milk this for kingdom come.
Get that sorted out, and this would be a good but expensive 4 star.

PS Complaining gets you extra points and smiles but they clearly messed up on the noise

Room Tip: Do not go for anything except the highest floors...

We were in San Francisco for the start of a 17 day trip around the southwest to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and our travel agent selected this as our first hotel. Right on Union Square near the shopping district and a short walk to the historic cable cars makes this a great location. The view from the restaurant is second to none, being on the 36th floor with panoramic views over most of San Francisco's landmarks, when not covered in mist. The Hyatt is still undergoing some refurbishment, which gave a somewhat cluttered appearance on entry to the lobby. But the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

The rooms however were of excellent decor and modern, complete with a separate bathroom and dressing area and included a large screen LCD TV and an i-pod dock!

The only reason this gets a four is because that in this day and age you should not have to pay extra for wi-fi when you are paying this amount of money to stay. We stayed at 9 different hotels on this trip and this was the only one which actually charged for wi-fi, poor, considering some of the others were more budget end of the hotel market.

Wi-fi charges aside, if you want a hotel with good location and stunning views this is the place come.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have less street noise, this is a busy area.

This hotel is well located in union square with all local amenities on its doorstep. Our room over looked union sq and Macy's. The room was big with a very comfy bed and decent bathroom. The staff have been fantastic, very welcoming. Breakfast is great, a good selection which gets you started for the day. The highlight of the hotel has to be the bar and restaurant on the 36th floor. Incredibly views of San Fran including coit tower, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. Highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed in a bay view room on level 28, and while the room was nice enough, the view was what made it memorable. We thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic view of the bay, Alcatraz, Coit Tower and the TransAmerica building. As the hotel is currently undergoing renovation of its lobby, we got a stay 2 nights, get the third free including breakfast so it was excellent value (with exception of the wifi at $10/ day). The union square location was very central, with a short walk to china town and north beach.
