“Quiet Sophistication...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Wonderful little hotel in a beautiful area of San Francisco. Service and quality are always present, and the sophisticated feel of the old world surrounds you. The small things that the larger hotels forget about, seem to hold their place at Hotel Drisco. We had stayed in SF previously, in the heart of Nob Hill, and that has it's place, but for a quiet spot that is in a gorgeous neighborhood the Hotel Drisco is great.

We had read all the reviews since we were traveling with friends that had not been to SF before, we wanted to make sure they had a nice time as well. All of the negative things I had read we id not experience - at all. We did have a nice suite on the 4th floor, and we stayed over a weekend, so some of the room-to-room noise issues, and the parking may have been removed due to those 2 things (?).

The staff was very helpful, and professional. We really enjoyed the afternoon wine tasting & appetizers provided, as I enjoyed my morning coffee and paper in the parlor.

Pros:
- Quiet rooms
- Great bed/pillows
- Clean, and well appointed
- Nice small amenities
- Wine tasting, and light breakfast included were great.
- Good coffee & tea (24hrs)

Cons:
- Location to points of interest
- No bar

Overall a very nice stay, and I would recommend this hotel to someone who has stayed in SF before, not looking for the noise of trolleys and sirens, and has possibly travelled to Europe where boutique hotels and manors are more common. My wife and I found the hotel to be quaint, and after traveling extensively, we enjoy the historic feel of the Hotel Drisco.

Room Tip: 4th floor is nice, and weekends eliminate parking issues it seems.

DriscoManager, General Manager at Hotel Drisco, responded to this review, April 18, 2013
Dear Guest,

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful review! I am very pleased that you did not experience any issues with room-to-room noise or any parking difficulties, but I am also not surprised at all! In fact the vast majority of our guests appreciate our historic 1903 structure and our complimentary neighborhood street parking.

I do feel, however, that it is always important to be completely up-front with our future guests about the type of establishment we are -- and the type of establishment that we are not, particularly as it relates to the (very few) negative comments that are evident here on Trip Advisor. So let's take these issues one at a time:

1. Room-to-room noise. Our lovely old Edwardian was built in 1903 with wood-framed construction. As such, sound does travel more easily from room to room than in more modern, concrete, soundproofed buildings. As you might imagine, our guests are usually extremely well-behaved and respectful, but sometimes TVs are louder than they should be, and sometimes kids run around to burn off energy. To be sure, the Drisco is no more prone to noise transmission than any other building our age, but neither is it as sound-insulated as a modern hotel.

2. Parking. We have no parking structure or lot at the Drisco -- our guests who drive utilize our neighborhood street parking, and most guests find this arrangement extremely convenient (and free!). Because we are located in a very exclusive residential district of San Francisco, parking is usually readily available within one block of the hotel. On very rare occasions parking may be more difficult. Our bell staff are always available to assist with retaining your car keys at the front desk and moving your car as may be required by local parking regulations.

3. Location away from the tourist sites. I only have one comment with respect to this frequent refrain -- guilty as charged! An integral part of the charm of a stay at the Drisco is that you are staying in San Francisco's most exclusive residential neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle of Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square and the Financial District. If you wish to stay in any one of those locations, there are many very fine hotels that can accommodate you.

Thank you again for allowing me to clarify some important aspects of a stay at the Drisco!

Kind Regards,

John Spear

Location:
In a residential area on top of the hill and next to 'Billionaires Row'

Room/Bathroom:
Big room; comfortable bed; good sized bathroom; European style furniture (some might say it's a little outdated)

Breakfast:
Big continental breakfast buffet with pastries, fruit, different sorts of bread, yoghurt, cold meat and boiled eggs. Choice of 'American' style filter coffee or espressos, cappuccinos etc., fresh juices

Service:
free WiFi; big free DVD collection; very friendly and helpful staff; free daily chauffeur service in the mornings to downtown; free coffee and tea during the day; very generous daily cheese & wine tasting in the afternoon incl. meatballs and fresh fruit

Room Tip: ask for a room facing the courtyard rather than the street (as quieter)

Atop Pacific Heights Hotel Drisco commands views of the Bay. Sunset Magazine labels it #1 in SF.
It is 5 star quality and you can get a reasonable rate if you call in and get a side room off of one of the corner suites. The only minor drawback was a private bathroom just a step across the private hallway to the suite. Never saw anyone in the suite. Loved the top of the line linens, peace an quite of the Hilltop, the breeze off the bay, and the breakfast downstairs was delicious. Excellent service. To get into town you can get a ride at set times during the day from the Drisco, call a cab, walk down the hill to public transportation, or drive and deal with parking that is hard to find.
I can't recommend Hotel Drisco highly enough. Just wonderful.

Room Tip: See my tip above. All rooms are great, though some more expensive than others.

The location of this hotel was perfect for us. We had no car and planned on hiking a lot. It is steps from the Presidio and a walking distance (40 min) to Golden Gate Park. You can also hike to Crissy Fields , Golden Gate Bridge and beyond (e.g.Marin Headlands, Sutro Baths ruins and the Cliff House with great beaches and views along the way). The hotel has two bicycles - Lucy and Ricky - and you can borrow them for a whole day during your stay (tip: book ahead of time to make sure that you get them). The two nice young men from the hotel staff team went out of their way to adjust the bikes for us and even reminded us to take jackets! The breakfast and wine tasting in the afternoon were fantastic - lots of quality choices for a complementary meal. Quality seems to be the signature of the hotel as attention is paid to the smallest details. The teas that are served at tea time are superb! This comes from someone who drinks only quality loose leaf tea. We have traveled a lot around the world and this hotel ranks among the best we have visited!

Room Tip: Our room was at the breakfast room level and had no view of the city but it looked onto a cute, tiny...

I had previously posted a one-star review, because when we stayed here in January, we had a very noisy room and the response from the front desk was inadequate. However, in response to our negative review, the hotel manager went above and beyond, both refunding our prior stay and offering us another night (complimentary). We stayed again in March, and everything about our stay was excellent. The room was terrific, the food was delicious and the staff was friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

Hotel Drisco is located in the beautiful Pacific Heights neighborhood. The hotel is an older building, so if you like new and slick, this isn't the place for you.
We had a city side suite. The bed was very comfy and the views were great.
We enjoyed the breakfast which was yogurts, meats and cheeses, all types of bread and oatmeal, as we'll as delicious coffee and juices. The wine reception in the late afternoon was a nice treat after a day of sight seeing. The wine served was very good quality and the selection changed every evening.
Hotel Drisco is very relaxing and the service was very good. I would def stay here again on our next trip to San Francisco.

Room Tip: City side has nice views

My girlfriend and I traveled 2 hours from the Central Valley to bring our friend up to California
Pacific Med. Center for a major medical procedure. Not knowing where to stay, I was happy to find the Hotel Drisco not far from our destination. The quiet neighborhood and the comfort of the hotel and their fine staff helped us to relax as much as possible the day before the procedure. Our suite was clean and had plenty of room for us three. The wine and cheese gathering "hit the spot" and also helped to divert the restlessness of our journey.
