Stayed here for two nights in one of the smaller rooms. Room was compact and well maintained. Queen bed was comfortable with good pillows. Bathroom was also compact, narrow and long with not a lot of room to get around the sink into the shower. Only complaint was that there was no air conditioning. Even with the overhead fan it was hot at night even though the day temperature was only around 70F. This was compounded by the fact that the room only had a small window that opened to a ventilation shaft. If we stayed here again we would pay for a larger room. Included breakfast in the Jean D'Arc restaurant in the basement. Food was good but very limited menu with only eggs or french toast options. There was dry cereal but no fresh fruit or yogurt. Staff was helpful. Coffee, tea, and cookies available all day in the lounge.

Room tip: do not book the lowest priced/sized rooms

Dear Heronsview,

Glad you manage in your small room and the bath room.
We had a few hot days lately but as a rule A.C is not even
necessary in San Francisco, the nights are cool.
Breakfast is generously offered by restaurant Jeanne d'Arc,
which may explain why it is somewhat limited.
We thank you for your good review and the four stars that
you gave us.

Best regards

This place just keeps getting better. Since my visit last year, they have added electronic entry for better overall hotel security, 24 hours a day. In the rooms they have switched to a very nice set of lotions, shampoo, and conditioners. The gradual update from old fashioned bath tubs to modern and large showers continues.

As always the staff is top-notch, knowledgeable, courteous, and helpful.

Anyone staying at the hotel absolutely must take advance of Breakfast or Dinner. The authentic French cuisine in the Jeanne D'Arc restaurant in the lower level remains underpriced for the City of San Francisco and has one of the best French wine lists anywhere around.

The entire building, rooms and restaurant, are like a museum of French art and history. Paris in California.

We really enjoyed our stay. We liked the tasty little restaurant in the basement. Even if you don't eat there, you should go down to check it out for the ambience. Just an FYI: there is an all nude male "theater" about 2 doors down with some racy photos in a display case outside. It is San Francisco after all, but I had not seen anyone mention that in the reviews I read of the hotel. Some folks might want to know that beforehand.

Dear melaniemd714,

Glad you enjoyed your stay and liked our "little restaurant located on the lower floor
(not basement)...of the hotel. and we thank you very much for your nice review.
Yes, we have a gay theater not far from our hotel, it has been mentioned in a few
previous review but as you say, it is San Francisco, besides they are quiet and never caused any problems.

Best regards

Great location near Union Square and cable car routes. Beautiful french themes throughout the hotel. Clean and comfortable, no air conditioning but can open window in the room. Friendly welcoming staff, always helpful. Would definitely stay in this charming hotel again.

Dear Marianne,

Glad to know you appreciated your stay in our small hotel and would stay with us again.
Thank you so much for your complimenting review and the five stars.
San Francisco nights are generally cool- less than a week of extreme heat- AC is not even necessary. We would welcome you again with great pleasure..

Warm regards

This hotel was listed in Fishermans Wharf but is actually closer to china town and Union Square. It is a classic but nice. Although noisy. The staff chose to vacuum the lobby and hall at 7:45 a.m. both mornings and our window opened to the alley, basement areas where they moved trash cans or something loud about the same time so we were woke up really early both mornings. The free breakfast was nice but would like it to go a little later than 9 as most of the guest are probably on vacation and getting up so early is not always what you want on vacation. The staff was very nice though and the hotel was well kept. Everything in the city is super expensive so the price was about normal for the area.

Room tip: perhaps one of the upper floors

Dear Keri,

Thank you for your good and informative review.
Sorry for the noisy vacuum so early, we shall give strict
orders to avoid this nuisance in the future.
Breakfast is generously offered by Restaurant Jeanne d'Arc,
customers do not pay a dime for it and it is costly. Starting
next year we shall charge for it and the hours will not be so
limited.

Warm regards
