“Clean, handy and breakfast”
Reviewed November 19, 2013 via mobile

Stayed at end of October. Good atmosphere and welcome. Very handy to Union Square - theatre and restaurants. Full breakfast which I enjoy. Access to bus routes for sight seeing to other parts of city. Would stay again.

The hotel is residing in an old building. The hotel is small and stylish but clearly needs renovation. Rooms are small but clean. Good breakfast. Free Wifi. Check in and check out was quick. Good location near the cable car stop. Overall good value for money.

Pleasant staff, very affordable parking across the road, comfortable rooms - quiet (we stayed in two different ones) with instant hot water, good American breakfast. All this and only two blocks from Union Square!

An excellent value for San Francisco!

The only negative feedback would be that the room was small. But we had three women with a lot of luggage and it still worked fine for us. I was afraid the bathroom counter space would be too small for all three of us getting ready in the morning but it worked out just fine. We even had all three of us in there at one time!! The beds were very comfortable. In fact I overheard one of the staff personnel say that they change the mattress' every 1.5 years. The décor was awesome and the breakfast menu was really good. It wasn't just your regular continental breakfast. You actually had options to pick from a menu. It was in walking distance to most everything we did or else we rode the trolley which boarded right outside the motel. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others and I would stay there again myself.

Dear Lori W,

Thank you Lori for your good comment.
We are glad that the three of you were pleased
with the "small room" but at least you were able
to occupy the bath- room at the same time...
We are proud to offer a good breakfast to our
customers thanks to Restaurant Jeanne d' Arc.
It would be nice o have the opportunity to
welcome you again.

Warm regards

The Cornell was our first stop after a very long flight and we were glad to be met by their friendly staff. This boutique hotel is in an excellent location close to Union Square and the cable car lines.
The artwork throughout the hotel gives it a unique character as does the original elevator. The included breakfast was great.
We stayed in one of the small queen rooms for 2 nights and a midsized room for our final night. The smaller room was comfortable and cosy, however, we would suggest that anyone who dislikes hot or stuffy rooms instead chose one of the larger rooms.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a midsize. Well worth the difference.

Dear PipAndrew C,

Thank you for a nice description of our small
hotel and the nice words for our staff.
We are happy that you liked us.
Our small rooms are supposed to be rented
to one individual.... you are right : a mid- sized
or big room would be more suitable for a couple.

Best regards.

Stay here with the foreknowledge that it is a boutique hotel. It lacks many of the modern fancy features of the newer, modern hotels. But if you want a taste of the old country, this would suit you well. It is competitively priced for San Francisco. The reception lady was friendly and efficient. We asked for a "medium" sized room and were pleased with the result on the third floor. My wife commented on the large number of surface areas that the furnishings provided. The claw-footed tubs are not appropriate for older couples. Getting in and out of tub can be a challenge. The surrounding shower curtains provided an unique experience as the rising heat generated by the shower water sucked the 360 degree curtains into the center of the tub engulfing the shower occupant. The included breakfasts were freshly prepared to order and the portions were appropriate for a light morning meal. The waitress is sometimes a bit harried but very friendly -- which made up for the grumpy older gentleman who prowled around the small dining room, scowling at the floor, avoiding eye-contact with the diners. The waitresses were different every day but the grouchy gentleman was always there. We guessed that he may be an owner or a kitchen manager who just lacked people skills. There are some interesting aspects to an older hotel. The elevator is funky and fun at the same time. The windows are screened and helped cool warm fall evenings in rooms without air conditioning. The ceiling fan in our room was also appreciated. We had a room facing an alley and it was very quiet once the evening garbage runs were finished. This was much as we expected from a small, older hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms on the street might be noisy. If you are over 50 years old, ask for a room without the claw-f...

Cute hotel. Nice bathroom tub. You can't get a better location. Fair breakfast and dinner at the restaurant in the basement a winner! Staff very friendly and willing to help you. If you are looking for a cosy place to stay and gourmet restaurant within that's it! you don't need a nice view through the window, go out and walk!
