Small and nostalgic Hotel very near the union square and directly at the cable car line Powell-Mason. Breakfast not really special. Parking to own costs, but for SF cheap. We didn't tried the restaurant, but the menues do sound very good and the ambiance is very charming

What a great location! Near Union Square, the Powell Street cable car line, and so many good little restaurants within walking distance. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Rooms are comfortable and cozy. Dinner in the hotel's Jeanne d'Arc room is delightful. Can think of only two things that would have improved our stay: Evening wine service in the coffee room/ lobby area would be nice, and a more authentic French breakfast (good croissants, cafe au lait, etc.) would be better than a rather ordinary "American" breakfast. Will definately return.

Dear Sandra,

Good to have customers appreciating what we do.
The cafe is new and eventually we shall serve wine
in the afternoon.
We tried for a while to have croissants for breakfast but
we were somewhat discouraged when customers told
us that they did not care much" for bread"..
.May be we should store some for the "experts"
Thank you again

What a pleasant surprise we had on our four day/night stay at this well preserved older hotel very well located in the Nob Hill area of San Francisco. A true hidden gem that included daily breakfast in the basement converted to a restaurant feeling like an old castle in the middle of France. A short walk to Chinatown, the Embarcadero, Northbeach and downtown we were in a perfect location for our forays out into the beautiful city by the bay. The parking arrangements with the garage across the street were very reasonable with in and out privileges. If you prefer small, charming and quaint over polished, new and impersonal, this is a great choice.

Location very good for the cable car stop on Powell and Bush provided there is space. Often full both ways at busy times.

Shower a bit of a dribble but adequate. Bath did not have a non slip mat and nothing to hold onto. Felt unsafe.

Breakfast choice of eggs, French toast, or cereals with waitress service. Did not eat at night so cannot comment on the restaurant.

Walgreens one block towards Market street. Two restaurants on opposite corners of Powell and Bush. Both adequate particularly after long flight.

Bed was reasonably comfortable, daily maid service, warm.

French theme and some staff obviously fluent in French. Wifi complimentary and worked well also computer in lobby but did not use.

The hotel has a lot of charm (and a cool vintage elevator) and the rooms feel homey. The staff is very nice and helpful. You will find the owners at work in the morning, greeting you with their lovely french accent.
On top of that, the hotel is situated in a great neighborhood, only a few blocks from the best shopping, good restaurants and chinatown.
The Cornell will give you a unique experience that you would not find in a chain hotel and with the same comfort.

This was our third stay at Hotel Cornell de France and each time has been a uniquely charming and comfortable experience. The reception staff, friendly and accommodating, is also multi lingual. The historic six story building is conveniently located only two blocks from The City's chic Nob Hill and a short walk down to the town center at Union Square. Despite this, the rooms are unusually quiet. Hotel Cornell is a smallish narrow structure, perfect for its boutique hotel status. To complete the theme, above the entrance both the French and American Flags display their colors. Each floor of the 50-room hotel is decorated in the theme of a different French artist: one time we stayed on the top floor, which featured prints of Matisse. This last visit, on floor two, many Monets were featured and doors leading into to each room were artist-painted with visages lifted from well known works by the famous Impressionist Toulouse Lautrec. Rooms, though small, are adorable, I can't think of another word to describe them, and are very clean. The walls and ceilings are hand-decorated with whimsical French provencial motifs as is some of the vintage chic furniture. Rooms boast a flat screen television, a coffee maker and wi-fi. Downstairs, below the main floor, sits the compact but gracious and elegant Jeanne D'Arc restaurant, the decor impersonating a room in a Medieval manor, down to the collection of authentic French antiques. Diners will find the prix-fixe dinner menu offers a mouth watering abundance of selections at very moderate prices, for this tony section of town. Breakfast, included in the room price, was very satisfying, as was the restaurant service. This place surely will be our must stay for many more San Francisco trips in the future.

We stayed for 4 nights and would stay here again. The price was awesome and it was within walking distance of many of the main sights e.g. Chinatown, Colombus Street, Union Square. We were originally given a room on the fourth floor but upgraded due to stains on the carpet (without asking) to a room with a bathtub on the first floor (107). It was quiet and super clean - all linens including the comforter were changed each day. Our only minor complaint was that the breakfast was a little scant, but it was included in the price so really a small problem. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to save some cash in downtown SF.
