I had read the hotel wasnt in the best area which is true but we didnt have any problems with the locals. If you just take care you will be ok which is good because the hotel is a real bargain. Our room was really clean and had nice big windows with a nice view. The staff were really helpful and funny.

Stayed here with my 14 year old daughter - really nice change from the big chain hotels. Room came with valet parking which was a bargain and really convenient to get the car and drive to dinner. The desk staff were super helpful with directions and suggestions. The room had bright Moroccan decor and good beds. TV was an older tube style but who stays in the room and watches TV while in San Fran. Lobby had a nice Euro vibe to it. This place is like staying at a little hotel in Paris but nicer staff and cleaner. Highly recommend this hotel if you don't need a gym or pool. Location was pretty central to Chinatown etc.

Stayed here before I moved to SF. Location is alright, slightly sketchy if you go directly south or further west, but a short walk to union square. Room was kind of cold, but they brought us a space heater. Overall good value as the rates were fairly low and we had a decent stay.

The room was very clean an spacious, and we had a decent view from our 8th floor room. We had a big flat screen TV in our room. The staff were very friendly, and they even have a free wine session for guests during which one of the check-in dudes rips it up on keyboards, which was a nice touch. Location was also great.

We did have a few issues with the room. There was no fridge, and the walls were relatively thin, so we could make out the conversation that the guys in the next room were having.

Overall, quite a good hotel and very good value for San Fran, but there are a few improvements that could be made.

Good location, only about 10 minutes' walk to Union Square. We had a King Room at the back of the hotel and, while this meant there was no noise from the street, we could hear everything that was going on in the interconnecting room next door, from the TV blaring at 2am to a couple noisily making love several times in one night! That said, the hotel was good value - the wine tasting each evening is a nice touch, there's free wi-fi in the rooms and the decor is very stylish. Good to have an in-room safe that can easily accommodate two laptops as well. Didn't try the restaurant except for breakfast (you can't really get room service as the restaurant is owned by a separate company), but there are plenty of alternatives nearby - try Colibri (Mexican) and Francis Ford Coppola's Cafe Zoetrope in North Beach, a pleasant and non-hilly walk downtown. Overall, a good-value hotel from which to explore the wonders of San Francisco.

The staff at the loction are very friendly and very helpful-nothing is a pain to them and they appear to enjoy what they do.They apear to know all the bus routes and are in contact with local shuttle services. The rooms are very clean with room service every day.The staff did suggest that we did not venture to the Tenderloin district as it was allegedly used by drug users.I did venture on the last day-It appears to be a typical American neighbourhood with youths on street corners.
Bus routes to the Wharf are very easy and bus stops are nearby(47 bus)
There are a few good bars nearby, especially the Irish one.
The food in the Restaurant was very good with plenty of choice to cater for everyone.
Some nights were noisier than others-I would suggest that this is the case for most of the Hotels in the district-I am a light sleeper and did not find the noise a problem.
The free wine every night is a bonus.
I would thoroughly recommend this hotel, well located, value for money...what more can one ask for !!!!!!!

I had read the reviews on Trip Advisor and though they were great overall, I was still leary of what we may find. We arrived early in the day, but they were gracious enough to let us check in by 1pm. All the concierges were beyond friendly and helpful. Always on the ball and full of information to help us out.

Our room was on the sixth floor and in the back of hotel. I had read some complaints from other reviews of noise being a problem. Well I was pleasantly surprised at how it was never an issue for us. We slept with our windows open each night we were there and the noise was never anything to complain about.

We had a king size bed in our room. I think its one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in! And they had a ton of pillows there too. So nice considering, I like to use at least two and so does my husband. The room was clean, a little on the small side even though there was a huge walk in closet. Why would you need a walk-in closet for vacation is beyond me.

And the bathroom was clean too. My only complaint was that the tub has a V slant to it and if your not careful, you will fall, as my husband did. We're young and in our 20's so its not like grandpa lost his balance. I had to hold onto the bar in the tub while showering to avoid doing the same. But regardless, I was happy overall with the room and our stay. Hotel Carlton is worth a try!!
