We loved this hotel. The Staff are excellent and informative. Wonderful Wine tasting every evening. Worth every penny. The room were clean and beautifully decorated. The Breakfast at the hotel resturant was very tasty. I can't say enough about how much we enjoed our stay here. I would most certainly return without a doubt.

This hotel is affordable, clean and has a very unique decorative style. The lobby is very homey an seems to be inspired by indian/middle eastern design and color schemes. Absolutely tasteful and modern.

The hotel is not like a standard comfort inn or other run-of-the-mill establishment. It is appears to be a renovated victorian style building which means that it has an 'old' look and feel to it. I mean this in the best way possible. Rooms are clean, and have been decorated tastefully. As other reviewers have suggested, it is situated on a busy street which during the night, or early in the morning, is evident on occasion. You can survive without earplugs but bringing them would not be a bad idea.

This hotel is perfect for young professionals seeking affordability and sleek style. It does not have all the amenities of other hotels (pool, game room) etc. but if you are a tourist, most time will not be spent at the hotel anyway.

Good location - as you exit the front doors, make a right (head uphill) and you will be walking to Powell where you can take a cable car north (to fisherman's wharf) or south to the financial district.

Friendly and helpful staff. For your reference, this hotel is located at Sutter and Larkin ( I didn't know the intersection and that was a problem for the cab driver dropping us off from the airport ).

I lovely hotel with a really unique and cosmopolitan feeling. The staff were the friendliest and most helpful I have ever come accross, and made me feel very welcome. the hotel itself is in an excellent location - just a few minutes from pretty much everything you would want to do. the rooms were cleaned to a very high standard every day and the whole hotel was beautiful.
All in all an excellent place to stay, especially at the extremely reasonable prices they offer.

If you ever find yourself in San Francisco and want to enjoy a place where the staff is pleasant, helpful and also excited to see you, then the Carlton is calling your name.
The Saha restaurant is the best kept secret in San Fran, and when you sample the Arabian fusion and the outstanding service by the staff there, you will have no reason to go anywhere else. Try breakfast there, too. It's perfect with a Capital P.

The Carlton's wine-tasting reception in the afternoon was an enjoyable opportunity to meet new people. For us it was a pair of femaile marathon runners who were great conversationalists, especially about world politics with we Canadians.

The rooms are quaint and colourful and clean. The prices are so reasonable you will have enough cash to explore the hippie zone of Haight-Ashbury, ride the California and Powell Street street cars all day or hop aboard a Red and White line ship to see the Golden Gate Bridge and circumnavigate Alcatraz.

Union Square is just a few blocks east . . . shop at Tiffany's, Saks, Macy's . . . or find a quaint bar and let your worries melt away.

The Carlton is worth staying at. It buzzes with positive vibes. If you bring a car, there is a pay parking lot across the street. You can walk up Larkin Street a few blocks to the practically tourist-free California Street Car line. Hop on and head all the way to the Ferry Building, the F-line train and the many commerical and natural wonders of Pier 39. Enjoy!

My boyfriend and I stayed 4 days, 3 nights at the Hotel Carlton to celebrate my 25th birthday. The hotel staff the first day was exceedingly nice and helpful. I got a birthday card the first night, which was a nice touch. Our room was located on the 9th floor (top floor, room #903), right across from the maids' room, which caused a bit of noise, but not anything too disturbing. We had a great view of the city. The room was a bit small, but very charming. There were a few issues that we had with noise. Our room appeared to be one that could conjoin with the next, so we were subjected to loud noises at around 4 AM every morning. It sounded as if the people next door were right in our room with us. Luckily, we are pretty sound sleepers. The only serious problem that we encountered during our stay was the water pressure in the shower. It was never very strong, but would fluctuate between absolutely nothing to drops to just a bit of water coming out. We did not complain at first, thinking that the water was just not strong on the top floor. The day that we checked out, the water completely shut off mid-shower, and I was left with a head full of shampoo. The water in the sink also did not work. We had to call the front desk several times before water came out to any degree that I could rinse my hair. When we checked out, we informed the front desk of this problem and they apologized, but offered no sort of comp or reduced rate. They offered us a business card of the general manager and told us that he would give us a promotional rate the next time that we visited. Having worked in travel and knowing that during problems such as these you must please the customer, I found this to be unacceptable. They then told us that our room was going to be shut down and inoperable. It is a good thing we were checking out that day! But all in all, the hotel itself is very well located to Union Square if you do not mind a bit of a walk. The overall ambience is very nice. There is a wine reception every night, but we did not attend since we were out sight-seeing. We ate breakfast twice at the restaurant inside, Saha, and I would really only recommend this place (for breakfast) if you are partial to eggs, since about 98% of the items are either omelettes or eggs of some variation. We might stay there again during another trip, but would like to investigate other boutique hotels in the area.

We stayed at the Carlton Hotel twice this fall and both stays were more than enjoyable. The rooms are very tasteful as well as clean and the staff is extremely helpful and friendly. When we returned to the hotel we got a room with a beautiful view in appreciation of our second booking. The only thing one has to bear in mind when plannig to stay at this hotel is that it is quite a noisy place. There is always some traffic on Sutter Street and the walls of the hotel rooms are pretty thin, too. Just bring some earplugs and you will absolutley love your stay!

For the price, you can't beat this hotel. The nicest staff of any place I've ever stayed. It may be 2 stars but they treat you like royalty. There's a good restaurant called Saha - very good food, a bit pricey but well worth it. The rooms are very clean, nice, new bathrooms. I didn't have a fridge in my room but upon just mentioning it to the concierge and immediately one was requested to be sent up. They go out of their way to be sure you're happy. The neighborhood is a bit iffy, but just a bit. If you walk one block north, you're in good shape for restaurants and shopping. It certainly wouldn't deter me from staying there again. And it's away from touristland. A short walk to Japantown.
