“Very good hotel, worth returning to!”
Reviewed September 1, 2009

I stayed one night as a stopover from Australia to the mid-west. I booked a shuttle from the airport and had no trouble getting to the hotel, just as well really because it is in a part of San Francisco where parking is a premium.

The room was great, a reasonable size, very comfortable, quiet and clean.

Staff were fairly friendly but were a little too keen to get on to serve the next person.

The evening free drinks by the fire in the lobby was great and a good way to meet people.

All in all a good way to spend the first day and relax before travelling on. The hotel is well placed and I walked across to and down Lombard Street to the Fisherman's wharf area and back to the hotel. Took a couple of hours, which is what I need after the long flights.

I didn't eat in the hotel and found that there was not a great choice nearby. The only really downside.

The fact that was an "Australian" shop nearby where I could buy Aussie food (incl Vegemite) was a complete bonus.

If you are active and don't mind walking it is a great place. If you don't like walking it is not that far from cable car stops.

We chose this hotel based on the reviews on Trip Advisor.

This hotel is centrally located and perfect if you have a car, we were able to walk to chinatown, union square and the tram museum all within about 30mins of the hotel.

We decided to put the car in the public carpark over the road as it was 8 dollars a day cheaper than the hotel parking. The car park was quite small though, we were lucky to get a space, if you mention you are staying at the hotel they will do you an in-out deal for your entire stay.

The hotel was cheap and cheerful with very helpful staff. Rooms were good, bed was comfy and the bathroom was simple. The shower was ok but not powerful enough. We visited in surprisingly hot weather for San Fran and we would have liked air con in our room - the celing fan was not enough.

There was a free wine reception at 5.30 everyday, we were busy on each occasion but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Everything was great except for the restaurant which served breakfast, service was very very very slow, seat yourself, you have to ask for coffee refills and beware they add their own tip onto the bill, this varies depending on who your server is. Food was ok.

There was nothing that I didnt like about this hotel. Centrally located in a decent neighborhood. You can find better locations, but not for this money. It is an vintage building, and doesnt hide this. Doors and trim are nicely painted wood. Everything was spotless and inviting. Very charming.

The staff was exceptional. Front desk went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Very International clientel, and the desk staff seemed to have no problems accomodating several different languages. Bravo!

We stayed for three days and then decided to return for our final night in SF.

Great hotel situated about six blocks from Union Square and trolley access. Very comfortable rooms with a homely feel about it. Would have no hesitation in returning to this hotel in the future. We had a great view city from the sixth floor.

We stayed here for 2 nights initially and booked into a second (more expensive hotel) for another couple of nights after a trip out to Yosemite. We cancelled the second hotel and came back here instead. The rooms were such good value for money; clean, bright & spacious. The staff were ever-so helpful and genuinely cheerful; the happy hour glass of wine was unexpected but helped make the stay that little bit more special. I picked the hotel because it was eco-friendly. I liked that they had taken the time to write down the history of the hotel and leave it in the room for guests (apparently a very strong building in earthquakes which is good to know!!). I will definitely stay here again when I return to San Francisco.

The staff and facilities at the Hotel Carlton are "the real deal." The hotel is a great value and is staffed by a great group of very helpful and cheery professionals. I found the dining room / restaurant was Grade A for breakfast. This hotel is an example of an excellent renovation that shows decorative style and taste as well as a "green" consciousness. I was also impressed by the centrally located filtered water dispenser that could be used to fill the glass pitcher I found in my room. How sensible.
