We were a party of 13 staying for 3 nights at the end of a 10 night 3 city tour of America. The
staff were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble, the rooms were lovely.
The daily wine tasting between 5.30 and 6pm is a wonderful idea.I would recommend this hotel when staying in San Francisco.

The staff is friendly and courteous, but it is downhill from there. The owners have done a good job of cosmetic repair, but it is an old building that is worn out and it shows, from the elevators to the doors to the walls, etc. This must be the bottom of the Joie de Vivre hotels, because others are markedly better. Based on Tripadvisor reviews, we asked for a kingsize room on an upper floor ob the backside to get a view and avoid noise. Even with that, we could not avoid the noise because there was no air conditioning and we needed to keep the window open for any air at all. The heat is from radiators that were on during the day, so our room was overheated when we arrived. They had just turned the heat off so it took a couple of hours to cool off. There was no price differential with other much better hotels. We changed hotels early in the morning after our first night.

Room Tip: King Room on higher floors on backside are quieter and have a view.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Hotel Carlton for 6 days Dec 7th-13th 2011. The hotel was very clean and we loved our room. A couple of nights we came back with bottles of wine and they sent up a corkscrew right when we asked. When we checked in, the concierge, Theo was awesome. He gave us a map and pointed out everything that we would want to see. The check in and check out was fast and all of the staff was extremely pleasant.

I was a bit surprised to see some reviews complaining about the old tiles in the bathroom or the simple rooms. It is an old hotel but very charming and I can't say enough how clean it was. That is always my biggest fear staying at hotels but it was really great.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to stay in a great area and who enjoys walking and exploring the city! Also, we found a fabulous flight/hotel deal on Travelocity so I would suggest looking to book through there as well.

This was a perfect choice of hotel to stay in while in San Fran this month. The staff was so accommodating, professional and friendly! We had easy access to the attractions through out the city and the staff helped with arranging reservations, cabs and recommendations on food and fun.
The hotel was very fresh, clean and brilliantly decorated with a cozy yet modern feel. The rooms had great amenities, comfortable, clean, big beds and clean bathrooms. Great breakfast too!
We will return here on our next stay in San Fran.
Thanks for a wonderful stay Hotel Carlton!!
Sincerely, The Meikle's, Atlanta, GA.

Good hotel for first visit in San Francisco, clean rooms and comfortable bed (request for king at high level). Walking distance to Union square and cable car to Pier 39.
Very friendly efficient staff and well mannered, no problems.
Breakfast area also the Saha restaurant at night, although no bar area. However there was complimentary "wine evening" with occasional music which was very enjoyable, hic!
Overall would recommend as central hotel in SF at a reasonable price.

Room Tip: request high level floor

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Carlton Hotel for 3 nights in November 2011. This hotel is very different with a dated but very quirky style. The rooms are a generous size, very clean, with adequate lighting, satellite tv, a coffee maker and a room safe. It's very cosy, and has a warm feel to it. The view from our room was the main street and at night you can hear all passing traffic, however this isn't a big issue. The staff on the front desk were extremely friendly, helpful and most informative. Each evening in the lobby area there is wine tasting for a hour and there's a real buzz in there as people play cards and socialise.
Location wise, the hotel is a ten minute walk from union square which has lots of shops and restaurants.
Also the hotel provides you with free wi-fi.

All in all I would stay in this hotel again, as it was certainly good value for money!
