We needed accommodations near civic center and this one fit the bill. The place is tastefully and artfully decorated with each room having its own historical name. The room was quiet and clean, the staff very helpful, and there was on-site parking which was additionally beneficial. We've stayed here before and were not disappointed the second time around. The neighborhood is a little sketchy but we've had no problem with the facility. We will return.

Pros: Clean! Comfortable! Quiet! (I think they were full, but for the first 3 days I only heard 1 guest room door once). All the staff I met were very friendly and helpful. Spacious room (executive king w/ fireplace). Great croissants in the boxed breakfasts. I got a great deal & amazing value! 1.5 blocks from BART. Caffe Moda (end of the block) & Custom Burger (across the street) were good.

Cons: Slow WiFi (< 0.8 Mbps), but I was in the far corner of the top floor. Rough(-ish) neighbourhood.

I stayed 4 nights at the end of January 2014 for a conference at the Mission Bay Conference Center on the UCSF campus (25 min walk or $10 taxi). The official conference hotel (3 blocks East) had tiny rooms, full beds, no breakfast, and cost 1.6 x the price.
The Carriage Inn is on the edge(?) of a rough-ish neighbourhood, but I walked to/from the hotel by myself (50 yr old male) after dark, every night, to/from either the South or East and never felt scared or even nervous -- but I did pay attention to my surroundings. Pretty standard big city behaviour...

I would stay at the Carriage Inn again.

Dear Al C,

Thank you for providing your wonderful opinions about our Carriage Inn. We are delighted that our humble hotel along with our friendly and helpful staff exceeded your expectations.

Living in the digital age we understand the frustration you must have experienced with our wifi especially since many of us are accustomed to the high speed internet we have at home as the internet has become such an integrated part of our lives and we offer our apologies. We have received the feedback from our guests regarding the internet and have upgraded our access points to provide a more stable network. Your feedback has been invaluable and has assisted us in providing you and our future guests a better experience in the future.

We hope to warmly welcome you back for a future stay. Thank you again for your time and response.

The hotel itself is cute and nicely decorated. The room is very spacious and got a nice victorian feel to it. I don't have any issues with hotel itself. But the location is bad. It's convenient to metros but NOT safe to walk around. I couldn't even go out to eat dinner. Will never stay there or near there again.

This is an older property, but seems well maintained and clean. Room decor and the hotel itself is interesting and not the same old, same old. Location is great for doing business in downtown SF. A short walk to metro, restaurants, and shopping - although the local neighborhood can be a bit scary at night.

Room Tip: My room fronted the main road, and with only one pane of glass in the window, and only one story up...

stayed spring 2013, clean comfortable, quiet, above average in terms of room finishes, neighborhood is not the best, not the worst either. Location is convenient especially if you have a car. No longer a best western, although this hotel is affiliated with the best western Americana.

Room Tip: front side is on 7 th very busy street, back is quieter and looks out onto trees.

At first glance it doesn't look all that impressive. When you find out it is a Best Western you understand. Not to say there is anything wrong with Best Westerns but it isn't the Fairmont or Marriott Marquis. But you aren't paying their ridiculous prices either. (The Carriage Inn is less than half the Marriott)

The rooms were lovely - each one decorated differently. The staff were so nice I really liked all that I met. It was one of the cheapest hotels for the Dreamforce conference but they gave free wifi as opposed to ridiculous wifi charges at the Marriott! Also, they had a lovely breakfast of freshly baked croissant, banana, OJ, and yogurt!

The hotel is in an up and coming neighborhood which is a nice way of saying I didn't feel comfortable walking alone at night on one street that led to the hotel. During the day I walked bak and forth without a worry.

I would definitely stay here again! And hopefully they will continue to sere those delicious croissants!

This hotel was better than I'd expected after reading reviews on Trip Advisor. It was absurdly expensive, but I understand this is the norm for hotels in SanFran. We paid over $400 total for one night (a Saturday). No room is worth that much, IMO.

The look of the hotel is sort of an aged-elegance style. I really enjoyed the look and feel of the room, which was very large. We stayed in one of the upgraded King rooms with fireplace. The bed was SO SO SO comfortable! And that's not something I usually notice enough to comment on.

The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. The lobby area is very tiny--expect to stand and wait if you arrive at the general check-in hour.

I did not notice any strange smells, as other reviewers have mentioned, and I did not notice the neighborhood to be either very good or very bad, however, BART was on strike when we were there so we drove in and out of the hotel and didn't do much walking in the area.

I'd recommend this hotel to friends. I just wish it wasn't so expensive.
