“lovely hotel and room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2012

loved my room and simply one of the best rooms for the look and feel. so much that regret having not clicked a photo of it. all rooms are named after luminaries out of san francisco and mine was called george washington II. there was a rickety old antique typewriter on the hotel desk and everything looked and gave the feel of a boutique hotel. the location was also convenient with caltrain and bart stations closeby which helped a lot as had a bit of shuttling around to do. the biggest issue was the breakfast which was just three items and the items of the menu were simply overpriced and considering stayed there 5 nights not exactly nice. also very close to the civic center and the waterside.

it's been 10 year since i was last in San Francisco. i wanted a reasonable priced, but central hotel and i made a great choice based on my past experiences with Best Western properties.
it was located just one block plus from civic centre/un square at mission avenue.
it was well lite 24 hours due to the two federal buildings on seventh st and the renovated buildings and condos in SOMA.
staff were exceptionally friendly. a nice renovated 4 story hotel with an elevator, a hot tub and patio on the second floor. housekeeping staff were friendly and happy.
at first i thought i was walking into an opium den when i enterd my room, facing 7th street. it was very oriental in it's decor. two great queen size beds, great bathroom, tv and chairs and table/desk.
i included breakfast in my room rate, which was taken in the comfort burger in the bw americana hotel across the street. good breakfast.
easy to catch barta to and from the airport, as well as a sunday morning visit over to berkley for brunch.
i think i've found my home in SFO!

This hotel had a lot of quirky charm which sealed the deal for me when searching for a place to stay. When I arrived I was surprised it was also next to the Good & Americania hotels.

Our flight arrived late and the night receptionist checked us in with little fuss. We had 'Big Bertha' room 309 with a bay window that over looks The Good hotel. We had a WiFi pass for all 3 hotels as it was part of the same group. One day it was actually faster when connected to the neighboring hotel.

First impressions were very good. The refurbished rooms was to a high standard, large in size and had great charm. Type writer with a explanation of Big Bertha and also a picture of her by the bathroom was a nice tough. The bathroom fittings were a bit old but it was clean which is most important! The room had twin beds but they were large enough to sleep two adults if needed. The only complaint was the large headboards were a little loose and it kept knocking the wall when moving in bed, wasn't sure if the neighboring room could hear it. But within 10mins in the room around midnight when we arrived we had the room below thumping their ceiling to tell us to keep quiet! I admit my friend was a little heavy footed, but he was bare foot at the time... Rest of the night we were conscious of noise and had no further problems.

In the morning when we left for the day we noticed there was a room by the lift with coffee. At time of check in we were not told about complementary light breakfast and we already made plans to eat else where.

The hotel itself is easy to locate and we arrives from SFO airport on the BART, from the Civic Center station it is just 5-10 min walk along the main road. General location is good we walked all over on the next morning to St Mary's Cathedral, Nob Hill, Lombard Street, Fishermans Wharf, China Town then back into the central area of Union Square!

We took a short cab ride to the Castro for drinks and then ended up in SoMa area for BeatBox for a dance. Initially I was a bit concerned to walk back down Folsom Street, there were many smaller side streets but we stuck to the main road and walked 15mins back to the hotel without any trouble. Day or night there were a lot of homeless people but a general smile and walk by they leave you alone.

This was the 3rd hotel for our world trip and we had fun staying here. We did not use the gym or the parking facilities but they are available.

Room Tip: Not looking over the main road.

Clean, spacious rooms in a deteriorasting neighborhood, Helpful, corteous desk staff, Lots of explicit extra rules on arrival ( $20 extra if a second person stays in your room; major hold placed on your credit card, maybe a dozen such even for prepaid ooms) No common area to speak of. Parking but I didn't use it. Appealing decor based on calebs of the hippie era. Excellent pastries & coffee for breakfast. I'd stay there again. Twenty minutes walk to the convention center. Ten minutes walk to the BART. Management seems to be doing its best , given the neighborhood

Room Tip: street side is noisy and adds no scenic value

Thank you for taking the time to share your review of our hotel with the Trip Advisor community.

It's wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay with us. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the convenience of our location to getting around the city. Although our SoMa neighborhood is not the most glamorous area of the city, it a diverse central area of the city that is on it's way to many improvements.

We look forward to having you with us again the next time you're in San Francisco.

Part of our wedding party stayed here for my sisters wedding.
Not what I expected at a Best Western!
The decor is quirky, kind of old fashioned with each room having the name of a historical figure on the room, which i thought was fun.
There are also fireplaces in some of the rooms! SO fun.
Otherwise this is basic Best Western.
Keep in mind that while this area is not unsafe it IS in the tenderloin and if you walk too far in one direction, things can be a bit sketchy or uncomfrotable for some people. Otherwise it is a quick walk or taxi ride to downtown area.

Room Tip: Get a fireplace room

Dear Jesikitty,

We certainly appreciate that you took the time to share your review about your recent stay with us and the Trip Advisor community. I am pleased that you enjoyed our accommodations, especially with one of our fireplace rooms which can certainly make for a warm and cozy evening! Our neighborhood of SoMA (South of Market) area is an eclectic and diverse area which contributes to the overall makeup of the city of San Francisco and provides convenient access to all points within the city. Although not necessarily the most luxurious part of town, SoMA is continually thriving with planned restaurant openings as well as major corporations moving into our neighborhood.

We hope to welcome you back on your next trip to San Francisco, thanks again!

Best regards,

We stayed my birthday week. This is the nicest hotel i have ever stayed. Staff courteous and helpful; rooms beautiful and spacious; good location for everything (nothing more than 3 miles from here). The decor is artistic and kind of art deco. Only coffee and muffins complimentary. Gym across the street which guests can use if present their room key. Noise is minimal. Would only stay at this hotel when i return to SF.

Room Tip: ask for room not facing street

On the site there is written they have continental breakfast but they give you a coupon to use in a little caffè where you have a little choice or, if you want, you can go to take a burger (at 9.00 am) on the other side of the street....
Every time they try to sell you bus tickets and tours
No good restaurants nearby and, unfortunately, a lot of homeless in the evening.

Dear ValerioVF,

Thank you for providing your view of our hotel and neighborhood. We apologize that our breakfast did not meet your expectations. The impression of our neighborhood can be quite surprising to some visitors but the south of market neighborhood is filled with a diverse group of locals which include families and singles alike.

To maintain our standards of customer service we continue to strive to provide all of our guests a well informed and enjoyable visit to San Francisco by providing everyone the aforementioned type of information. One of the hottest and most progressive restaurant in San Francisco is located less than a block from the hotel with many more a couple of blocks away.

Hopefully you will return and provide us a second opportunity to explore our ever changing neighborhood. Perhaps your future stay in San Francisco's south of market district will be more to your liking. Thank you again for your time and response.

Kind regards,
Don Ignacio
