I love the location of this property(if you like the hustle and bustle of downtown. It's a narrow building with a vintage feel inside, the hallways are dark with red carpeting/runner. We just checked out of 814, two night Friday and Saturday for the Pride Parade and Prop 8 Celebration. We only happened to be here because my husband's business trip to Northern Cali and then back home finally to L.A. This was property no. 8 on our travels and we were exhausted.
Room 814 was nice but with absolutely no view except roofs, the parking garage, and the Grand Hyatt across the street(no street or skyline view);
- the one and only problem was the miniature toilet that did not flush properly and almost overflowed several times. We had to leave and get out of there on Sunday because we couldn't use the bathroom. It was inconvenient to keep running down to the 2nd floor just to use the bathroom;(housekeeping came in to plunge the first night but it just needs to be fixed).
We seriously hope the new owner/management fix the toilet/plumbing issue.
- Breakfast was nice - pseudo-continental with a few extras.
- No A/C just ceiling fans and a nice breeze from the huge windows - this was sufficient since SF does not get too hot anyway. I love feeling the cool breeze and the traffic/outside noise is soothing.

The Mystic is located just 2 blocks off union square and 1 block off Chinatown. You couldn't possibly get a better location for this price. Rooms are ok in size (to SF standards anyway) and clean. Bathroom is spacious but has a shower, no bath. Rooms had recently been refurbished. Too bad for us but the floor above us was still undergoing renovations with workmen starting to make loud noises from 6.30am which isn't the greatest if you're trying to shake a jetlag. When we complained about it at the reception, we were pretty much ignored by a clueless staff member.

Breakfast at the Mystic was well below par with only a very limited choice. We tried some of the fruits but the bananas were halfway rotten. It also served the same every day. You're better of eating breakfast elsewhere as there are plenty of excellent options nearby.

The building has only one elevator which is painstakingly slow. If you're going places in the morning: take the stairs or wait a small eternity.

The Mystic is an OK hotel but mainly has its location going for it.

Thank you for your honest feedback, and my sincerest apologies for your concerns not being taken care of immediately when you reported them. I trust my staff to always put the guest first and I'm sorry this was not the case in your situation. Since your stay with us in May room renovations have ended, and we have upgraded our continental breakfast because we do understand it is an important guest amenity. We do pride ourselves on service and creating a great guest experience. I hope we get the opportunity to serve you again on your next visit to San Francisco and create a more memorable experience encompassing service, ambiance, and location.

After reading the reviews I was pleasantly surprised that the hotel exceeded my expectations. Firstly, a warm welcome by Angel at the front desk and a smooth check-in. Room was great! High up and quiet (even though renovations were happening on the floor above), elevator to get up there was slow but we only really used it when we had luggage, rest of time we took the stairs. Very clean and modern space and comfortable bed. Complimentary breakfast was good quality eg. starbucks coffee and nice variety to get you going in the morning. Having the Burritt Room on site is a bonus and we enjoyed the cocktails and live music. Location was brilliant, close to transport and sites. Would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: We had a double room on the 6th floor, spacious and comfortable and quiet

Stayed here for 3 nights and here's the breakdown. LOUD street noise. Construction. Water in shower doesn't get hot just warm. Run down old building. Elevator takes forever when it's not broken. Staff clueless. Only good thing is location.

I would like to to apologize for the disturbance you experienced during your stay with us here at Mystic Hotel by Charlie Palmer. We are consistently trying to make improvements to our building to enhance guest experience, security and safety. The elevator being a project we are working on now as well to improve. Our team does try to create an engaging and welcoming experience for all of our guests I would love the opportunity to leave you with a more pleasant and memorable experience here at Mystic Hotel if you give us the chance of welcoming you back.

What makes a perfect stay … before reserving you select your style, location and then the reviews and yes I checked most of the reviews (TripAdvisor) and overall found the majority of them to be on the positive side and on the downside it was really little niggly issues which can always be addressed and when checking the website we really liked what we saw and so we reserved a 7 night stay and our first time to San Francisco adventure goes like this ….
After a 6 hour flight we arrived at the hotel and was pleasantly introduced and greeted by Vera and Daniel, they informed us of our surroundings and if we needed any further assistance they were there for us and then directed us to the elevator. The lobby is comfortable and a fair size but you would never have guessed that tucked away behind it is a restaurant / lounge bar. Now to the famous Elevator that everyone talks about …. Yes it can be on the small / slow side (patience) remembers this is a historic building oozing with history, charm and character. Checked into our room (love the key fob) and was really happy with what we saw and moved in. The hotel is so centrally located we decided to throw down the cases and go to Union Sq. all but a 5 minute walk and found seating at Emporio Rulli il Café and that was our timeout space when we had no activity’s scheduled and excellent people watching ! Being our first night we were a little tired so we decided to eat at the hotel restaurant and were not disappointed … nice menu selection / very pleasant staff and of course the lounge bar has jazz playing which really gives a nice background feel and the tiredness was taking its toll so off for a good first night’s sleep - we have a spacious king size bed (very comfy) with flat screen mounted TV and a sitting room with couch, desk, coffee table … the décor and layout felt great, very clean and we felt at home. Breakfast was located in the Burritt restaurant and each time we went down it was so much fun to hear Motown playing in the background as you can see other guests getting their groove on whilst enjoying a very nice buffet selection with Starbucks coffee. Our seven night and eight days consisted of visiting Chinatown, North Beach, Nob Hill, Fisherman’s Wharf we also took the ferry to beautiful Sausalito and then a wine tour to Sonoma/Napa Valley (breathtaking) with Green Hill Wine Tours … a must and great tour …… and sadly the adventure comes to an end and l would like to say thank you Rita (AGM) for answering my pre questions and welcoming us , Angel for great restaurant suggestions and your colorful jackets / bow tie and each and every member of staff we encountered always had good energy. The Mystic was clean, inviting with such character and an excellent place to stay - highly recommend and we will return !

Room Tip: Took a peek at several rooms and very tastefully decorated and some a little larger than others.

Loved our stay of 3 nights last week. We had booked 2rooms and after a little confusion with the booking everything was soon sorted by the wonderful Angel. He went out of his way to smooth things out and made sure we were completely happy. We were!! Loved the trendy rooms, the cocktail bar (fab drinks menu) and the live band on Tuesday evening. Yes we heard the rubbish collection but so what it was only 5 mins and back to sleep in the comfortable bed. The bathroom was great shower, toilet, wash basin and even a window! The staff were all very helpful and went out of their way to help.
Would definitely recommend to friends.
