“Decent base to explore SF from...”

We stayed at the Serrano as a family and had booked two adjoining rooms, our two teenagers sharing the adjoining twin room to our double.
The rooms are a little on the small side but this is probably to be expected from a city centre hotel in an early 1900's building. Having said that, the bedding is very comfortable and the mini-bar well stocked, with good options for in-room entertainment.
The reception is nicely decorated and the adjoining bar/restaurant convenient for a drink or something to eat. Staff and concierge are friendly and helpful.

My husband and I stayed at Serrano for one night during our Honeymoon. We flew into San Francisco and had one day to explore. We took BART to Powell Station and it was an easy 5 minute walk with our luggage.
When we arrived, we were upgraded to a room with a better view and Gaby (reservations agent) had put a bottle of chilled champagne, cupcakes, bottled water, a hand written card and a map of San Francisco with hearts placed around the best sites to see in a day. It was such a sweet surprise to start our Honeymoon!
Every night, Serrano offers a complimentary wine hour in the lobby. We took full advantage of that and it was definitely a plus!
Our room was comfortable and we will forever recommend Serrano Hotel to San Francisco visitors.

I spent nine days in the Bay Area recently, with weekends at the Serrano, and weekdays visiting family in Marin and Sonoma counties.

I'm a Kimpton InTouch member, and am always looking for those welcoming emails with special rates. So I took advantage of one of them this month.

We checked in at 7 p.m., missing the complimentary evening wine the first night (but met friends in the adjacent Jaspers Corner Tap and Kitchen for drinks and dinner. (separate review)

The complimentary wine (and the opportunity to mingle with other guests) is one thing I love about Kimpton properties. The second night was one of those bitterly cold San Francisco nights in December 2013. And the lobby was pretty cold, but the wine warmed us up.

The rooms are older San Francisco size - not large, but perfect and cozy. Breakfast at the Kitchen was great, I really loved the steamed heirloom grains. I had that three times!

The front desk staff were helpful and friendly, and I had a great 5 night visit (spread over two weekends in December).

One caution: The first night I valet parked at the hotel after circling around looking for a cheaper lot. The sign said $52, but by the time the city tax and other fees were added it was $65! On my second visit, I arrived earlier and parked across the street at another parking lot and paid $39 (with in and out priviledges) - still a lot, but......that's San Francisco! Don't drive if you can help it.

Good location - close to Union Square and far enough away from the Tenderloin district to feel safe. Rooms are on the small side (but then we'd just left Vegas where there's no such thing as small!) though perfectly adequate. Hotel staff friendly and helpful and provided complimentary continental breakfast vouchers on arrival (which we weren't expecting).
Standard complimentary toiletries provided in the bathroom but if there's anything else you've forgotten, there's a range of additional freebies available on request.
Free coffee in the reception area until 10am and free wine between 5 and 6pm. Nice touches.
All in all, a great experience.

Bed was comfy and room nicely styled and clean, it was the smallest hotel we stayed in on our month long USA trip however big enough for 2 and really you only need the room to sleep, shower etc. In a wonderful city like SF your not going to be in the hotel room that much anyways. The hotel had very friendly staff especially one very helpful man Stefan i think his name was at the info desk, he was a huge help when we had a mess up with a touring company (not associated with the hotel) The lobby area is incredible with great decor. Jaspers restaurant attached had some really tasty food, had breakfast and dinner there twice out of the 5 day stay. Hotel is located only a short walk from all the terrific stores in union square. Only down fall to this hotel is that its right near the 'tenderloin district' where a huge population of homeless hang around, although they weren't any trouble as long as you proceed with caution and ask the doorman like we did which ways to walk and which places to avoid. Also another small issue was the shower in our room the first night it literally took 5 mins to heat up i ended up having a cold shower and then as i went to turn it off it finally started heating up, so hubby got a hot shower not me :( a bit annoying considering after being on planes and in airports for almost 24 hours i really wanted a hot shower, other than that i highly recommend this hotel.

Had a great stay here a few months ago when we dropped in the city for a night. Beds were very comfortable and it was in a great location for us to get to great bars and restaurants. THe restaurant in the hotel was also very nice and hip.

Thisbwas the first time I stayed at the Serrano. The staff was friendly and helpful. I came for the Nike women's marathon. I loved my room. It was comfortable and personal. I did not have the chance to try the pool or spa. Beds were comfortable.
