“Short but sweet--great location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2012

We only stayed at the Hotel Nikko for 3 short days -- but they were 3 perfect days. The hotel was in a great location which helped with our first trip to San Francisco. We had no problems checking in/out and the concierge's desk was most helpful. The room was small but served it's purpose--sleep! It was nice having a Starbuck's off the lobby. Will definitely stay again.

This hotel was very clean and nice. Contemporary, sleek in appearance. Average to small sized rooms. Free wi-fi in rooms. You can use the Business center for a fee - something like $75 per hour. However, the consierge was willing to print off our boarding passes. Health club is available for $20 per day. Location is great. Close to shopping, restaurants and the trolley.

Dear Tucker0325
Thank you for taking the time to comment on your stay at the Hotel Nikko. Please note that we have two categories of rooms. The Petite Queen has 270 square feet and is ideally suited for one guest, but may accommodate up to two guests. There are a limited number of the Petit Queen Rooms. Our Deluxe rooms (the majority of our inventory) have 370-420 square feet. Perhaps on your next visit the larger room will be more to your liking. For the best deals always visit our own website hotelnikkosf.com.

Warm regards,

We chose the Nikko primarily for its central location to Union Square, and as home base for my family's first trip to San Francisco. I've been to the city many, many times and stayed in many of its beautiful (and sometimes not so beautiful) hotels. My main goal for my family was to be out and about in the city, so time spent in the hotel itself wasn't a priority. That said, I wanted a clean, comfortable and somewhat upscale and vibrant hotel experience for my wife, and kids (13 and 10), something that reflected the city's unique and wonderful energy. Also, I vetted hotels that had an indoor pool, as that is often the key to a relaxing vacation with kids. The Nikko didn't fail to deliver on those expectations, especially at its price point - a great value as it turned out.

Perfectly central location aside, the rooms were mostly clean and minimalist in the japanese tradition, with nice upscale touches including a small tv screen within the bathroom mirror. We were upgraded to the club level (I requested available upgrades upon check-in), so we had very nice views of the city in a ceiling to floor window.

The hotel's amenities and staff were excellent. The lobby is very open and airy, and feels bustling with good energy. Upon check-in, the concierge walked over and offered our kids a week-long scavenger hunt to participate in.

On our first night, my wife and I let the kids watch a movie in the room while we walked downstairs to have a drink. At first we walked into the jazz club bar (adjacent to an actual, apparently well respected jazz venue), and while not really our scene, seemed to have a lively and energetic crowd. Instead, we opted for the restaurant bar upstairs, which offered a 180 degree difference in mood and atmosphere - quieter, more romantic, which was exactly what we hoped for. Our waitress was excellent and we ended up talking about a variety of subjects from wine to favorite hidden spots in SF to love of baseball.

The indoor pool and exercise facility are a bit dated, but still clean and airy and provided exactly the moments of respite that seem pretty necessary when traveling with a family of four.

The only other very minor complaints I had were with some of the smaller room details - too many flourescent lights, a bathroom just a tad too spartan for my tastes. But I've stayed in hundreds of hotel rooms from twenty years of international travel, so I tend to be ultra picky about such things. Overall, our experience was very good and we'd easily recommend the hotel to families looking for a similar experience.

Room Tip: If you can afford a little more per room, ask for a higher floor upgrade. It's worth the money...

Dear mkray22
Thank you for writing such a comprehensive review of your xperience at the Hotel Nikko. We appreciate your comments regarding our staff. It is gratifying to know that the culture of our hotel touches the guest experience in a meaningful way. I am please d to know that you enjoyed ANZU Restaurant and Bar and thought it to be a calm and romantic place to enjoy a glass of wine.
Several years ago the hotel made a commitment to go green. One of the ways that we chose to help Mother Earth was to change our lightbulbs in every guest room. These energy saving bulbs have made a huge impact on our energy consumption and have helped us to achieve excelllent Istay Green and Energy Star Ratings.
Thank you again for your review. We hope that you will return for a visit in the near future. As you are planning your next trip to San Francisco make sure to visit our own website hotelnikkosf.com for the best deals.

This was a very nice hotel we stayed during our honeymoon. The room had great facilities, was very well decorated and very clean and comfortable.
It's right behind the Union Square, witch is great and has a lot of good restaurants around.

Room Tip: Choose the higher level rooms

We stayed at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco on a three day stopover en route to Hawaii in early april 2012. The Hotel has a great location with quick access to amazing shopping, transport, restaurants and the tram. Rooms were lovely with big plate glass windows that gave a fabulous view over the city. Security was good and the rooms were quiet and very comfortable. Service was indifferent - its a busy impersonal business hotel so not many friendly touches for guests. Our stay was also spoilt a bit as we mistakenly left a bag with shopping and souvenirs in the room on checkout, phoned the same day to query and the bag was gone - although completely our fault due to oversight, this is still theft as it was plainly brand new goods that were left by mistake and this left a bad last impression. Final summary - its a smart, comfortable hotel with super facilities and the location is perfect not only for business travellers but also for tourists - but it leaves a cold experience as the service is very distant and not hands on at all. I would stay there again for the comvenience and comfort but the hotel does not form part of the 'vacation experience', rather a place to sleep and change, although that is in some comfort and style!

We thought this hotel had a good location, the rooms were clean and we certainly liked being on the upper floors where you needed a key to get to. I did not go to the free continental breakfast or cocktail hour, but my husband said you could make dinner out of it. However, the free breakfast buffet downstairs was quite good and not boring after 3 nights. We also liked the bathrooms, roomy, the view, extensive and the chocolates on the bed at turndown. One thing I now have a problem with at all hotels, no room in the fridge for drinks, and if you remove theirs, you get charged.

Dear Travel4lifenow
Wow! Thank you for your review. You hit so many of the highlights of our service. The Imperial Floor is totally worth the additional charge. It makes such a difference to have all of the amenities included for such a small fee.
As for your comments regarding the fridge. Our refrigerators do come fully stocked as minibars. An empty refrigerator will be brought to your room at no charge by simply making a call to our Housekeeping or Front Desk Departments. On your next visit, please let us know in advance that you would like a refrigerator and we will have it waiting for you!
Since you travel 4 life now, please visit again soon. We look forward to pampering you again!
Sincerely,
Nikko Gal
