At 8pm, I walked up to an empty front desk and waited for 15 minutes before someone finally showed up. He then proceeded to argue that I had "only been there for 5 minutes." Really? I reluctantly got the key to my room, got on the "lift" (which was an antique like no other), and arrived at my room. HORRIFYING. There were drawers open, and the general look and feel was absolutely DISGUSTING. Thankfully, Hotels.com worked with me on a re-booking, but I would not recommend this to anyone looking for anything other than a hostel. The place just needs to be burned to the ground. YUCK.

Room Tip: THere's not one

Rooms were clean and the bed was fair. There is no coffee maker, mini-fridge or microwave in rooms. They have coffee in lobby but it is awful. The coffee shop across the street is awful for $2 a cup! The hotel is not in a very nice area of the city, but centrally located and has many bus lines. You will deal with a lot of homeless and others who go to the help center across the street. The bus lines run on both Polk, but more on Van Ness a block up, and Geary every 10 minutes. The staff were all really nice at the hotel and most everywhere in San Fran. People on the buses and street would offer help when they would hear us trying to figure things out. I would not stay at this hotel again mainly because of location and lack of amenities in rooms.

The Monarch Hotel is centrally located in San Francisco to the Bay Bridge, Union Square, Moscone Center, and Folsom St. I had the opportunity to stay at The Monarch in July 2013. It has a very European feel to it. As I was walking through the lobby, it was not uncommon to hear guests speaking Spanish, French, and Portuguese. The rooms are size-able with large closets equipped with a full size iron and board. In addition, they have wireless internet, refrigerators and ceiling fans in the rooms. If you need to print a boarding pass, they will take care of that for you at the desk.

The hotel offers coffee throughout the day and is convenient to a number of eateries. For breakfast, I took a left out of the front door and walked to the end of the block and had a great breakfast at Mel’s Diner. If you have a late night craving for pizza, turn right as you exit the hotel and go down about a half a block on Geary; there is a great little hole in the wall “Irving Pizza” by the slice. Bring your food back to the hotel and eat in the lobby, it is a great place to people watch.

If you are a large chain hotel guest, you may not be able to appreciate the charm of this property.

Oh my goodness the place was filthy. The tea and coffee was on the ground floor, in flasks, and the area was a terrifying experience. Homeless everywhere. Not for children. Take the lift at your peril! Such a shame, as the building could be so attractive. Good bit was it was close to China Town!

Room Tip: I doubt there is one!

Old hotel with no updates or refurbishments.
For $140/night during the week, you can do better. The 2 previous nights we stayed at hotel Opal just around the block, which was much better for $130/night - breakfast included.

As you entered the hallway a bad smell instantly hit you, a mix of urine and cleaning products I think. The room was small, which I'm ok with, but all furniture and fixtures were original and at least 40 yrs old. Carpet didn't seem clean and there was something unpleasant about getting into bed. The location is very noisy and heard people screaming for help and abusing each other a few times during the night. No breakfast available. I was ok with it as it was only for one night, but we stayed at better motels for half the price. Don't stay at the Monarch hotel.

It is near all the major bus lines that can take you anywhere in the city. Clean beds, no breakfast, good complimentary coffee/tea. The elevator is old so we took the stairs to the 5th floor everyday.

The Bad: Smelly, Carpeted room with who knows what in it, Smelly.
The Good: Cheap, Daily cleaning service, Good transportation around it, Private Bath, Free WiFi.

Private bath at this price is rare in SanFrancisco !

Would go again because of Good/Bad ratio.
