King George Hotel - A Greystone Hotel

This hotel has a great location that it is just around the corner from Union Square on a safe street. Also, if you do a bit of research, you'll find that compared to other hotels in San Francisco, which is a very expensive city, its rates are lower than most hotels in safe neighborhoods (and San Francisco has some very sketchy areas). Be aware that this hotel is almost 100 years old, which I like but not everyone will. It means that the rooms are very small and the closet in our room on the top floor was about as minimal as you can get. The bathroom was clean but also small. The lobby staff were extremely helpful and friendly and although there is no breakfast in the hotel, there are plenty of places nearby to eat. The Powell Street cable car going to Fisherman's Wharf is a short walk away.
Tips: If you are renting a car in San Francisco, all the main agencies have pick-up locations right across the street in the parking garage. By taking the airport shuttle to the hotel, you can save on airport surcharges, exorbitant parking charges in SF, and a car is unnecessary in SF anyway, so you can pick up the car only when you leave. The Powell Street cable car has huge lines at its starting point but if you use the Union Square stop just up the street, the driver usually saves a few places for pick-ups there. There is a nice seating area in Winston's Bar in the hotel and the bar has a happy hour every night. Finally, SF is plagued with panhandlers. Just ignore them and they'll go on to easier marks.

Room Tip: Probably the higher the better to get away from street noise.

Just had a very pleasant stay here. Comfortable beds, clean, very helpful staff. It is an old hotel and the rooms are a bit cramped and oddly shaped. I stubbed my toe or heel each time I entered or exited the bathroom due to the tight squeeze between door and tub. Also, even in San Francisco last weekend was hot and there was no a/c. We opened the window to cool the room, which made a big change in the noise level, of course. However, the place is quaint, pleasant, and we enjoyed our stay.

Our stay at the King George was an impromptu stay! There was a problem with our reservation at the Inn at Union Square and they had made a reservation for us for one night at the King George. The staff were very helpful and we can't fault the service we received.

The room was not great. It was clean and comfortable for one night but we were glad not be staying there for longer. The room was very small and dark, with a small window overlooking an alley, and a very low ceiling. It felt like being in a box. The room did not have air conditioning and felt quite stuffy. Also the themed decor is terribly tacky.

We probably wouldn't choose to stay at this hotel again but if you are looking for a reasonably priced, clean, comfortable hotel, in a central location for exploring San Franciscso, and plan on spending very little time at your hotel then you should consider the King George.

The hotel about 100 years old is right in the union square very comfortable for a tourist who values nearness to restaurants, markets and tourist bus facilities. The room is small but very comfortable and cosy. it would be helpful if the hotel can also provide breakfast. The staff are friendly. Choose this hotel if you are busy outside most part of the day as tourist and want a comfortable place to get back for sleep.

Room Tip: Choose a room in lower floors so as to use stairs if necessary.

The King George hotel is a nice hotel just 1 block from Union Square and 2 blocks from the cable cars. We were pleased with our stay at the hotel, the staff was very nice. We arrived around 9 in the morning and needed to store our luggage until our room was ready and they were very helpful with this. They also worked to get our room ready early so we could clean up after our flight. The guy at the front desk also gave us a room near the back of the hotel which was great because the noise from the city was not as noticeable. My one complaint was that it has no air conditioning unit so we slept with the window open and the noise at 6am was not pleasant.

This was my second stay at the george and I was not dissapointed. The staff was courteous and helpful with my questions about public transportation and attractions. Great downtown location. Walked to fishermans wharf in about 45 mins. Took a taxi back and it was 12 bucks. Not bad for SF.Rooms are on the small side but they are clean and quaint. I was happy the windows in the room open for some fresh air. Nice blues club across the street. restaurants are on either side of the hotel. The only drawback was the elevator that only accomodates 4 people. This is much too small for a hotel with over 200 rooms, so when its busy you might have to wait awhile before going up. They have no parking, but there is a parking garage across the street for 32 bucks for 24 hrs., so be sure to add that on to the pricetag. Overall it was a good experience and look foward to returning

King George deserve this 5 star rating courtesy of the way we were treated. We stayed here for one night (which was very nice), but later on in our holiday we realised we had lost a pair of prescription glasses. We contacted King George to find out they had found them and kept hold of them (despite this being quite a few days later) and would happily return them to us. Regular contact was maintained through email and they were sent back to us in England at a price of just $25! Considering to buy a new pair it would've cost us about 10 times that price, we are delighted. They were carefully packaged inside a case with protection, and only took about a week to arrive. I would like to thank the staff of King George for being so incredibly helpful and considerate, and for the speed in which they helped us regarding both responses to emails and getting them delivered to us. Thank you!
