“Best location for Alcatraz and pier 33”
Reviewed June 23, 2011

We asked for a quiet room and they delivered. The room was small, but we found that most big city hotels in the USA have small rooms, unless you're prepared to pay a lot more. It was compact, but clean and comfortable, with a reasonable sized ensuite. We had a trip to Alcatraz booked early and the location couldn't have been better. It only took a few minutes to walk to the ferry. I had read reviews on this hotel and was nervous about the homeless situation. Yes they were there, but not a problem and not a nuisance. I was also nervous about the fact that this hotel takes pets, but only on the 1st floor, thank goodness, we were on the 4th floor. This was our 1st trip to the US and I am amazed at the obsession that Americans have with their pets. I even saw a dog on board a plane, I would have hated to occupy a seat after the animal had sat on it! It just doesn't happen in Australia. The staff were friendly enough, some were a little offhand and preoccupied. I liked the free internet and use of a computer, with half an hour limit. There was coffee or tea each morning in the lobby, but there were plenty of eating places close by. In particular, Darren's cafe on Taylor.

Room Tip: Ask for what you want, they can only say no.

We stayed 4 nights here, and had a suite that fitted 4 people.
Whilst a little small, room was good.

The hotel was very well located and also well looked after.
Most importantly the service and the staff.
This was excellent! Everyone was friendly and was always on hand to help.
Restaurant food was very good for both Breakfast and dinner and waiter service was excellent.

For th eprice and location we would come back here.
Easy access to Fishermans wharf (highly overated) and most other attractions.

Great place to spend the weekend at while visiting San Francisco. Our room had a bad TV and we were offered another room or $50 discount per night! Can't be that!

We've really enjoyed our stay there for the following reasons:

Location:
Great place to stay when in SF. You are 5 minute walk from the bay. There is plenty of restuarants, bars, shops etc at the bay. You can easily walk to different piers and enjoy all what they have to offer. Wlaking distance to the cable cars stop, to the Alcatraz pier (best book before you travel to SF as the trips are usually booked sold out for the next two days) and we even walked on a few ocassins to the city centre.

The rooms.
Not massive but just right for 2 peole and very cozy. Also lovely decorated. Couldn't ask for more fo the money we've spent on it.

The restuaant
Downstairs, in the hotel there is a restaruant which isn't owned by hotel. Great food and great service. Very helpful staff as well when it comes to pcking bar or club to go out to.

The service
Lovely staff and very helpful.

Overall we would definately stay in this hotel again. Great value for money.

We decided that we wanted to see San Francisco at Christmas time. We booked at the Tuscan Inn, and apparently got a great deal, because I was going to book there again for a summer visit, but the prices are double what we paid in December!

The building is just blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. It is adjacent to a small shopping mall and across the street from Safeway. The building is old, but nicely remodeled. The room was very spacious, with cute wooden shutters over the windows. We really loved the lobby, with the lovely conversation areas and large fireplace. There was an enormous Christmas tree in the middle of the room as well as some other beautiful decorations. They have an evening managers reception with appetizers and beverages, including California wines. They do have a seafood restaurant, but we did not try it.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience. Our one complaint is that of anyone who visits San Francisco...the price of parking! We spent $30 a day on an outdoor, public lot. The valet parking at the hotel was considerably more than that.

The front desk staff and concierge were very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. We had a great time!

My husband and I stayed here in May 2011. It was perfectly located for our needs. We mainly walked everywhere we were going, around Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach, and also used the bus stop located right in front of the hotel, and hoped on the cable cars located nearby.

The hotel itself is nice and attractive. The people are friendly. We didn't take advantage of it, but every evening they have a wine reception in the lobby. Don't forget you can ask the front desk for an umbrella if it's raining!

The room was larger than I expected with one entire wall containing a mirror. This did steam up quite a bit when we took our showers but it wasn't an issue. The bed was comfortable and we had plenty of space for luggage and lounging around the room.

If I had to note an area of improvement, the housekeeping staff could have been better. The trash was taken out and bed was made, which was all we really needed, but don't go in expecting much more.

We dined at the hotel restaurant once for breakfast. The food was good but, we felt, overpriced.

A lot of people don't like the Fisherman's Wharf area and think it's too touristy. That did not bother us. The area and hotel suited us perfectly for what we were looking for and I would recommend it to others.

We stayed for several nights ending with Memorial Day weekend. The hotel is really well located to all San Francisco tourist spots - most within walking distance or easy to get to by the cable car around the corner. The king room we had was smallish but had a nice, big, clean bathroom with all necessary amenities plus a nice window that opened and looked right at telegraph hill and coit tower. There was room service, in-room delivery available from a great italian place close by, plenty of decent, affordable restaurants within walking distance, Trader Joes, Safeway, and a gas station literally next door or around the corner. Everything you would need or want is very convenient.

The parking is $44 a night. It is, however, 24 hour valet service and they'll haul your car around 20 times a day for that $44. Considering there were parking garages (but not valet) in the $25 range all around the hotel, it just seems a little steep.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. The cleaning crew did a great job, all staff we encountered were helpful, and the wifi worked great.
