“Perfect Tourist Location, Small Rooms”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2011

Stayed here for a conference recently. If tourist attractions and nightlife is your interest, this is a great spot, in the middle of everything on Powell Street with Union Square and Market St (Ave?) very close by. Lots of restaurants in the immediate walking area. Cable car runs right in front of hotel, and the end of the line cable car turnaround at Powell and Market is just a couple blocks away, as it the Powell St. BART station. Staff was helpful. Place is very informal. If you are here for conferences, the Parc and Hilton are very close, and Marriott Marque and Moscone Convention Center are (from my perspective) an easy walk of about 7-8 blocks.

You should know that some of these rooms are quite small. I stayed in both a standard room and a double double. The standard I had was not much more than a large closet, with the bed taking most of the room and a flatscreen mounted on the wall to save space. Very cramped. Sharing a double double was also a tight fit. Our room had one small closet and our suitcases were in each other's way. Many rooms face Powell, which is both entertaining but also loud. I'm a good sleeper and also don't mind ear plugs so I enjoyed it, but some may not appreciate the activity and noise levels. The rooms were clean and the beds were nicely firm, but these are pretty basic rooms. TV was fine but no big perks here. Bathroom was average but clean. (They give you a huge bar of soap.)

A basic place but a decent deal for those on a budget. My standard room was only $79 on hotels.com, although it was so small I don't think I would do it again. In general these are not rooms you will want to spend a lot of time in. My only other qualms were these: the free breakfast was very limited (toast, granola, a little fruit, and muffins, plus coffee/tea/juice). No protein and hardly worth bothering with. Adding just a little variety would have improved it greatly. And Wi-Fi had a fee, although they ended up giving us passwords for free after the first night (not sure why, my roommate got them from the desk).

Room Tip: Avoid the small standard room behind the elevator. It's more like a closet. (Maybe all the stand...

This is an excelent option if you don't have a car. Everything is at the door of this charming hotel. The management was nice and we had a lot of fun.

Our room was overlooking Powell street, which is noisy by traffic (including cable cars), but it didn't matter to us.

We loved it!

The Good
The location was wonderful, 1/2 block from Union Square, cable cars and easy walking distance to BART, the MUNI, The Ferry Building, Chinatown and PacBell Park. The staff was great - friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The property and the rooms were all very clean.
The Bad
The rooms are small (a night stand can only fit on one side of the bed) with very thin walls. The sink is not in the bathroom, but about 1-1/2 - 2ft from the side of the bed. The furnishings are distressed - for instance the headboard is set up to have a reading light on each side - ours had a light on one side and three holes on the other. There is also a floor drain in the middle of the bathroom which emits a moldy odor.
The Ugly
Breakfast? In fairness, we got there 20 minutes before they stopped srving - but all they had was white and wheat bread, one kind of muffin, one kind of cereal, coffee, tea, water, orange and cranberry juices, butter and grape jelly -that was it. No fruit, no hardboiled eggs - really just not much. We didn't bother to even go down the second morning we were there

This hotel was nice. We were on the 7th Floor and lift was very slow, so 7 flights of stairs were tiring but hotel was nice. Breakfast is poor but we didnt expect much more. Location is fantastic, just off union square and next to Cable car stop, which takes you direct to Fishermans Wharfe for $6 each. Its a bit noisy at night, but i think that ay have been due to our room having a view over the road, which was lovely dispite the noise. Definatley Reccommend

This hotel is great - everything LP suggests - great location with excellent public transport links to everywhere (Cable car, BART, Muni buses and taxi rank all within a block), sparklingly clean rooms, friendly helpful staff, and great prices for central SF. Other reviews have mentioned the lift, the breakfast and the room size. The breakfast is toast, muesli and good coffee - a great choice when you are staying in a foodie city and are likely to be eating large quantities of great food at all other meals. The room is certainly smaller than a suite at the Ritz (although larger than my own bedroom at home [I live in England]), but there is so much to do in SF I was not there much so it was more than adquate. Now the lift - I was staying on the top floor of the hotel (8), and timed how long it took in the lift to get from the lobby to my floor. 46 seconds. Not so long I think you will agree. I must say though that at busy times (breakfast, and when the staff are servicing the rooms - there is not a service lift) it can take ages for the lift to actually arrive at your floor..... still though if you are that impatient there are stairs...
Overall I loved the Stratford - I recommend it highly and will certainly be back!!

Within seconds of Union Square and situated on historic Powell Street, this hotel is all about location. It also offers an excellent budget choice for SF. We stayed in a Queen Club room which had a view of Powell Street. Personally, I did not find the room too noisy. It was spacious with a reasonable en-suite shower room. The bed was comfortable and there was only one day out of a 5 night stay our room was mysteriously not made up - but the hotel receptionist dealt with this issue very well. The BART station at the end of Powell St makes transit to/from SFO really easy. The lift is very slow; there is only one but this is an old building. Breakfast (which is included) was fine. I would consider staying here again (unless I felt like treating myself to a little more luxury) but all-in-all this is a good, comfortable choice.

Room Tip: If you're impatient about waiting for the lift, ask for a room on a lower floor!
