“More of a hostel than a hotel”
Reviewed October 3, 2013 via mobile

Apart from small rooms that REALLY need a makeover, the lift is a relic. Probably Installed when the place was built, nothing appears to have been upgraded. What makes it worse is the ataff jam the doors open with laundry tubs when there doing the rooms. The breakfast, although complimentary, is overpriced. The dining area makes it look like a down and out hostel, and although there is fruit salad available, you have to be lucky to get anything more than sliced apple. The only up side is the location, which is great

Hi Davy,
Believe it or not, many people actually like the elevator, and the overall atmosphere, since it is meant to be an authentic, vintage, boutique hotel and not a sterile environment. As for breakfast, it is varied, with toast, bagels, breakfast pastries, orange juice, various spreads, and the fruit salad, as well as coffee. Perhaps coming late, right before 10am, might mean that less options are available. However, something that is free, by definition, can in no way be overpriced. We are glad that you did get to enjoy the location and hopefully the many sights San Francisco has to offer.

I go to the City every chance I can get and have for years, dancing my way through the 80's, teaching a field intensive college course on the city in the 90's, and always celebrating the arts, culture, sports and various festivities that are San Francisco. My husband and I spend @ least 4 long weekends in the City each year and we always stay here. Why? Because the small rooms are charming and we don't subscribe to the big is better theory. Besides we have plenty of space @ home and we certainly don't go for our San Fran cultural/escape/fix intending to spend large amounts of time in our rooms or watching TV or on the grid. It is so convenient and charming. The breakfasts are as bountiful as you want. The elevator reminds me of my many travels in Europe and incidentally, I always meet travelers' from all over the world resulting in a bonus mini cultural exchange. Great food at the nearby crepery. Above all, Marina at the front desk is great. Every time we return, I feel like I am checking in with an old friend. The Fitzgerald is located in a densely packed area of an international city so of course one will encounter noise, vagrants etc. I can't help but wonder why if travelers' crave space and silence they come to San Francisco in the first place. In sum, if you are an international traveler not seeking the "Big is better disposable version" of America or like us, you travel to be a part of the experience and you love NPR, then you will love this gem. Can't wait to go back.

Stayed three nights (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and paid $700 for the pleasure. No AC, No screens, tiny room, vintage elevator that you could hardly get into and out of (the kind with the iron gate you pull back and forth from the 1940s and 1950s), room's view was of the parking lot and the yells from the vagrants and the parking lot attendants. Curtains were frayed. Coffee pot equipment had no coffee pot. Old bathroom with miniscule soap.

We're sorry that you were not completely satisfied with your experience. Reception is always on hand and happy to take care of anything that is amiss, such as the coffeepot or providing you with more complimentary toiletries... but they won't know to do so unless it is brought to their attention. As for the rate, it is actually a bargain for a central downtown boutique hotel, in the peak of San Francisco's tourist season!

We really enjoyed our 10 day stay at the Fitzgerald. The staff were friendly and helpful, the help-yourself breakfasts were as big or as small as you wished, and our room was clean and tidy. Couple of drawbacks - the room was quite small and there wasn't much storage space (really just a small wardrobe) and as someone else has mentioned the lift was small and made it a bit difficult getting our luggage up and down. At the same time, the lift with its old fashioned sliding grill added to the charm of this hotel.
The location is good - not far from union square - and there are plenty of transport options. We would recommend it pretty highly.
PS: We were travelling on a tandem bicycle, and they found storage for it around the corner at the Adelaide Hostel, which seemed to be owned by the same crowd.

Pleasantly surprised by this genuine San Francisco boutique style hotel from yesteryear. Small rooms, but we were out all day. Really helpful desk staff that organised taxis and directions for us. Excellent location - walk a couple blocks to Union Square and buses, cable cars. Great to get help yourself breakfast included.

Room Tip: The corner shop isn't just alcohol, they sell food and other items. Get a San Francisco Pass or...

Very well situated near Union Square. Easy walk to great shopping. Very close to many bus routes, BART, and cable car. Breakfast downstairs was well done with good range of choices.
Only poor feature was the elevator - very small and difficult to open.

Room Tip: A room over looking the rear car park gives a feeling of extra light and space.

It is not a Hilton, rooms are small BUT it is right in the middle of everything. Trolley runs right past, there is a great steakhouse next door and it's within walking of major shopping. The staff were friendly and the afternoon free wine was appreciated. Our room was next to the elevator and some noise was evident but after a fuil day it did not seem to matter.

Room Tip: Try to avoid rooms near elevator
