I shared a room, first with my husband and then, after his departure, with a bridge partner. It was fortunate that my husband was there first, as he was able to fix the overhead fan so that it would run without the light being on. With no A/C, the fan was necessary during the warm days. I can second Judith D's comments, up until the last sentence. Neither my bridge partner nor I felt unsafe during the day or evening and we considered the hotel itself to be rather quaint - think 1950's era. During the final two days, the basement breakfast area was being renovated, which meant there was no longer Internet available in the hotel, although we were allowed to use the computers at the hotel next door.

Maybe it was the old, cage-style, very dingy, elevator, with a grimy door, part of its jamb gouged-out and scratched and stained walls, that gave us a lousy first impression that, possibly, biased the rest of our stay in this place, which we, pretty much, disliked intensely. The best thing you can say about this hotel is that the rooms are clean. However, they are on the small side and the huge old-style wooden bed (although very comfortable) and massive chest of drawers do not help any in this respect. Really amazing was the fact that the chest of drawers had three handles missing (for one of the drawers and the two middle doors, which thus could not be opened at all!). The bathroom door, unless fully closed, insisted on swinging fully open (towards the room) and the clothes closet was not even deep enough to accommodate the hangers (so that the doors would be always partly open!!!) and was noticeably tilted forward. I don’t think we would return to this place, even if for free, unless it were the absolutely last choice. It really seems like they are trying to squeeze the last drop out of everything, as just about everything seemed to be on its last legs (slightly soiled carpets –ours with a burn mark from an iron-, old bedsheets, etc., etc., etc.) They should renovate it all, and soon!!

And, yes! the room windows were left wide open, with the fire escape ladder just outside! You see, it was "Indian Summer" .... And no in-room safe! You had to leave your valuable stuff at the front desk, where they kept it in a drawer.

And all for $300+ a night!

We booked the Fitzgerald because it was available for our dates (when my first and second choices were not). We stayed five nights.
The room was small, but the hotel description had forewarned me of that. The advertised "continental breakfast" consisted of a wide range of breads, bagels and English muffins, which you could toast, a large choice of jams and spreads, tea/coffee, juice and fresh fruit salad. The last usually arrived some time after 7:30.
The daily housekeeping was fine: bathroom cleaned, carpet hoovered, linens changed, etc. But the corners of the towels rails needed a good clean; and there were maintenance issues including being unable to plug the bath tub or close the window unaided. I was alarmed by the sway of the overhead fan and glad it wasn't summer in San Fran.
The day reception staff were pleasant and helpful. The WiFi worked and there were two computers for guest use in the windowless breakfast room.
For me, the chief issues were really the location and the noise. The Fitzgerald is on the edge of the Tenderloin, which is noisy, not threatening. There is a fair amount of raucous drinking through the night; and sanitation trucks collect bottles and clean the streets from 3 am. We had a room at the back, but I was woken at least twice each night; and once kept awake most of the night by the television in the room next door.
It is certainly not suitable for nervous travellers and it didn't add anything to my experience of San Fran.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are (marginally) quieter.

We travelled from another country and booked through a travel agent. On arrival we couldn't believe how small and dodgy the lift was, we had to do around 8 trips up and down to get our luggage to the room. Once we entered the small cramped room we couldn't believe that the windows were wide open and with no screens or bars etc.. luckily we got to it first before our 3 year olds fell out 6 stories to their death....no safety regulations what so ever, each window we saw was like this! Definitely not for young children. The lock/door handles didn't really lock the windows properly, very stressful as the bed was up against the window! The shower didn't work, the tv couldn't get a signal long enough to bother with the tv, the phone in the room didn't work, the 'free wifi' , well that only worked if you sat in the stair well! And it was an absolute rip off, we ended up moving after the first night and going to another hotel of much better standards and for not much more money.

Room Tip: A good tip is don't go there.

My husband and I stayed in Fitzgerald Hotel for 5 nights.
The hotel is well located and not that expansive (compared to other downtown hotel)
However, rooms are small, showers and bathroom are really small. Breakfast is not great. Poeple at the front desk could show more enthousiasme when welcoming customers.
In general, I would not recommand this hotel.
