“Which is worse, rats or an incompetent staff?”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2013

There was a rat in our garbage can last night. A rat. When I called the front desk they told me their was nothing they can do about it because, "I could catch the rat just as well as they can." Not only does this place have rats, but when the rats get into your room you're expected to chase them around yourself because the front desk won't do anything.

Unbelievable.

This place was horrible. We went for a weekend getaway. There was one person working the whole hotel. There was no manager on duty. We had several issues with our room. We had to trade rooms 3 times. One of the rooms the whole floor was soaking wet. The other room was a one bedroom and not what we paid for. The next room had bugs. We ended up having to leave the hotel. When we ask to speak to the manger because the one associate working kept making excuses and didn't really show a sense of urgency... he just said maybe you can talk to the manager on monday.

My work colleague and I booked this place for a very large conference in town. All other nearby hotels (biz class hotels) were all booked up, and this place wasn't too far away.

The hotel itself is not that too bad. It certainly not really a biz class hotel, but it just OK. The place is very retro, from the manual elevator door, creaky floorboards, purple/black tiles in the bathroom, but I didn't mid all of that.

The biggest issue is getting to/from there. From Union square, you have to go through a very dodgy part of town. Even during the afternoon, my colleague and I felt VERY awkward getting back tot he hotel going down a very dubious street. Got hassled a few times, especially very "out of place".
Suffice to say, the trip back to the hotel at night was by taxi. I would feel very uneasy walking around there.
So location kind of sucks.

But the room was quite comfortable. In fact, had a great sleep there, though the bar/club downstairs was closed that night.

Price was pretty cheap for SF though. $160/night.

Room Tip: Higher floor I think would be better, in case of noisy bar/club below.

It was our first time in San Francisco, this hotel was just a lucky shot. Hotel is in close distance to all sightseeing objects (walking about 30 min), bus stop is 2 min away. Rooms are clean, housekeepers are friendly and helpful. Hotel is kind a cheap, provide breakfast even though continental breakfast is not the best meal. And also about breakfast they are really strict about the time (7am-9am). Overall we would advise to chose this stay:)

We booked the trip last minute so this was what we found. I give this hotel poor ratings due to the service and the unsafe location. We had asked for extra towels and were told we couldn't have them after the lady was very rude about it. Amongst other rude things. I've never heard of this at a hotel. The location was OK in terms of proximity to touristy things but it felt very unsafe. We took cabs to and from the hotel everywhere. I would not stay here again.

We live 20 miles south of San Francisco and needed a place to stay in the city to celebrate a dear friends 40th birthday - all you can eat and drink! This hotel was perfect. After reading the reviews I was a bit concerned that it would be ... well "gross". But let me tell you, I have seen gross and this is far from it.
We found it to be charming. Not modern but authentic 1960's style with pink a black tile in the bathroom! Our room was spotless, larger than we expected, quiet. The bed was king size and comfortable.
I am well traveled and usually stay at 3 or 4 star hotels and I was fine with this place. The location and price to me are a great value.

Room Tip: High the floor the better.

I read the reviews before i went and to be honest i was dreading it.... The hotel could not have been more different from the reviews. The staff were amicable and whenever we approached them for their recommendations for where to eat etc they were very helpful. Yes it is dated, but it was clean. Yes there was some noise, but i can't imagine there is a city centre hotel in San Fran which is quiet! Sirens blaring at all hours! But that is what you get when you stay in a city. Ive spent more money on worse hotels in other tourist cities around the world (Paris, Madrid etc). This is the perfect hotel if you want a clean and comfortable base to allow you to go exploring and spend your money enjoying yourself and not on a hotel.

Room Tip: We were on the 5th Floor over the street - some noise from the street but not a problem
