We selected this restaurant as it was close to our hotel and well rated by Tripadvisor. We found the fixed price menu (the only option) to be a little pricy. The food was well presented and very tasty. While the restaurant was very small it had a cozy atmosphere. If the booths were all taken groups of 3 or less would possibly have to sit at the bar. We would recommend it as a place to eat if you were in the Union Square area.

Book way ahead for a table at this tiny, and just a little funky, spot on the ground floor of a hostel in downtown San Francisco. Like its space, the menu is small, but everything our party of four had was wonderful from the salads to the desserts. Petrale sole is ubiquitous in the Bay Area, but it's hard to imagine anyone doing it better than Canteen. The care of the chef is matched by service that is helpful and efficient. Foodies, local or tourist, will leave happy after a meal here.

I have been visiting Canteen over the years, and had dinner there tonight. It is truly a tiny gem of a place serving the most consistently excellent food in a super cool setting with warmth, grace and kind hospitality. I am so impressed by the quality, care, and passion that Chef/Owner Dennis Leary (DL) puts into his preparations! I first discovered Dennis Leary at his sandwich shop, Sentinel, on Montgomery Street in San Francisco. If you have never been there, you need to call in your order in advance (unless you want to stand in a long line and risk the food running out) and have the Moroccan egg salad, the corned beef sandwich, any lunch special any day or the chocolate chip cookie! I love the fact that the former SF Chronicle Rising Star and chef at Rubicon is bringing high end and high quality food to the masses. He is, perhaps, one of the pioneer of the movement of young notable chefs who want to cook the highest quality food on their own terms in more informal settings, and at moderate prices. At Canteen, he buys the ingredients, cooks the food, and serves it with the help of one assistant and two servers, to the lucky few who can snag one of the twenty chairs at the tiny restaurant. Currently, the chef is featuring a new menu based upon Robert Courtine's 1971 book, The Hundred Glories of French Cuisine. There are two services nightly at 6 and 8, and the menu is 4-course with some choice. As my husband is vegetarian, I really like that Canteen is happy and willing to accommodate vegetarians. Tonight's menu included dungeness crab salad with fennel, peppers and a habanero sauce; porcini mushroom soup with parmesan; pork loin with duck confit, red cabbage and apple puree; a kale gratin with truffle was the main course for vegetarians; lemon moussoline; and a chocolate pot de creme with hazelnuts. Of course, we started with DL's sublime parker house (brioche) rolls! Everything was absolutely delectable and cooked by scratch in front of us by the chef. You could taste the freshness and high quality of the ingredients in every spoonful. Every bite was perfectly seasoned and served to us by gracious and attentive servers, who seem just as passionate about the food. It really is awe inspiring to watch the chef's artistry in the kitchen. He makes you feel as it you are the chef's friend invited to his home for dinner, and as you sip your wine (a glass of prosecco in my case) at the kitchen counter, he spins and twirls and produces the most amazing food in a tiny kitchen as if by magic! At the end, I love the chef's uncompromising standards, integrity, and passion for food - it shines brightly in every, delectable bite of food! While it might take a little extra effort to snag one of those 20 seats at Canteen, I promise you, it will be worth every bite!

We had dinner at Canteen after having read many excellent reviews about the place, so with very high expectations. The place is small, but cozy. The Menu Degustation for that night was not impressive, being my Roast Pork the star, and quite expensive. The service was ok but not outstanding.

This was recommended by my doctor as a great little restaurant, and in this at least, she was correct. By a miracle they had a last minute cancellation after we had tried for days to get in and it was well worth the effort. The food was delicious and light, but obviously as it is tiny there is little or no choice.
