“Wow”
Reviewed October 23, 2012

I walked by this restaurant and there was a line so I made a note to check it out.

I went for lunch with a friend who is usually nervous about eating at places that aren't chains and she enjoyed it as much as I did!

The gyoza was fantastic! Perfectly cooked and the sesame sauce was a nice light side. We shared the BBQ pork ramen with the soy sauce and it was enough for both of us. Yummm.

“Noodles and Sushi...You bet!”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

This tiny and not terribly attractive little restaurant puts out some really good food. Had their sushi and their noodle dishes and they lived up to the expectations we had as we stayed in a hotel nearby and there was always a crowd there. Really good value and would go back anytime.

“Fantastic Recommendation!”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

My coworker and I were in town for an event. It was a long day and we needed food - now. A friend recommended this place near our hotel and we went straight to it. We were fortunate to be seated immediately and did not have to wait. Our server started us with the gyoza - and those were fantastic - however we were also starving. We also shared the spicy tuna don, which was indeed spicy - so good. We also shared a LARGE portion serving of the miso ramen. Superb! I would definitely return to this spot - even if I have to wait for a little bit.

“Significantly exceeded expectations”
Reviewed August 22, 2012

Significantly exceeded expectations. The restaurant has very limited seating and usually a decent wait. They are very efficient in the seating process. After you put your name on the wait list, they will give you a menu 5 to 10 minutes before a table opens up. These tends to be a common source of confusion. Many people get the menu and assume they are getting seated right then. That is not the case. They are just letting you know that you will be seated soon and they want you to look over the menu so you can order soon after being seated. The Mabo ramen (ground pork and spicy broth) was amazing and Butter Corn ramen was above average. You get a good serving size at a decent price. I would definitely eat at this restaurant again and strongly recommend it to friends and family.

“Tourist trap”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

Good points:
. centrally located across the street from the Geary Theatre
. friendly service
Bad points:
. uncomfortably crowded; small space
. weak tea dispensed from a central server; no tea pot for each table (bad sign #1)
. weak miso soup (bad sign #2)
. waiter substituted one dish for something ordered but did not have without diner consent
. tempura vegetables were mostly potatoes with little egg batter; possibly refrigerated and microwaved
Neutral points:
. udon noodles were fine
. didn't try the sushi
Comment
. tried this restaurant (Katana-ya) because the Trip Advisor rating (4.5) was posted on the front window. High expectations, but big let down. We'll never return and can't recommend this restaurant to anyone who know Japanese cuisine.
