“Night in the city”
Reviewed May 8, 2012

The old historic hotel was nicely restored, the room was clean, the staff was friendly and the breakfast was decent.
Now for the other things:
This area of town appears the be the gathering spot for every pit bull owning, homeless vagrant in the United States. They all live in the park directly across the street from the hotel, making an evening stroll risky, unless you're armed (not socially acceptable in San Francisco).

The hotel lobby is small, but has a couple of love seat and stuffed chairs for an evening lounge. Not much for privacy though. The room that is used for the breakfast was originally the hotel dinner room and also has some seating accommodation but guests do not have access to this area for any time other than breakfast. This would make a nice spot for an evening glass of wine as a stroll through the neighborhood is risky.

The hotel has none of their own parking. There is a privately owned lot across the street for eighteen dollars. Some arrangement between the hotel and the owner of the lot would be nice considering the $197 tab for the night.

Pros:
1.Best location for people visiting UCSF Parnassus campus (10 mins walking distance).
2.Nice helpful hotel staffs.
3. Good choice of breakfast ( Not hot breakfast though !)
4.Clean room.
Cons:
1.The heating system in the rooms are simply horrible. Specially, if you visit in the winter time, you will have a rough time at night. They also do not provide good quality warm blankets.
2.No coffee machine/ hot drinking water in the room.
3.Rooms do not have iron.
Overall, for 155$ per night, this place is too overpriced !

This hotel located in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco provides a clean and affordable room in a historic building. Having said this one should not expect the amenities normally found in the more expensive hotel brands. The breakfast buffet is nothing to rave about and the desk staff are only somewhat helpful. I was surprised that the hotel did not have the ability to cash even a small travelers check. My primary reason for staying at the Stanyan Park Hotel was its proximity to the University of California, San Francisco and the as well as the proximity to public transportation.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the larger rooms, preferably a corner room as far from the traffic noise as possible.

This hotel sits across from Golden Gate Park and is an easy walk to the deYoung and Science Museums. The room was clean and comfortable but the plumbing left something to be desired. The windows open wide allowing ocean breezes in. A continental breakfast comes with the room. The staff made a point of being of service. At night, there was street noise which came to a halt by 11 pm. Not sure if this is a good area to walk around at night.

Room Tip: Get a front room overlooking the park

Location is a key consideration depending on why you're visiting San Francisco. This hotel is right across the street from the Golden Gate Park & 3 blocks from a light rail transit stop - so handy access to downtown or the Ferry Building (and from there access to Fisherman's Wharf). Unfortunately, restaurants in the immediate area are thin - the person on the desk the evening we arrived could only recommend one which he thought was reasonable. This was a real disadvantage for spontaneous dining. Also, we didn't feel very safe walking in the area once it got dark - this was reinforced by the two armed security guards outside the Whole Foods which was 1.5 blocks from the hotel. The hotel itself is all right - nice Victorian feel. The first room we were assigned smelled moldy, however, we requested a move and the 2nd room was fine. Breakfast is only worthwhile if you're on the run and can't go elsewhere - in which case a quick cup of coffee and unremarkable bite to eat might be welcome. Amenities in the room are basic - when I phoned for a shower cap I was told that none was available because the hotel was economizing. Front staff do their job and can provide information about transit etc. In summary: If you want to be in this area, this hotel isn't a bad choice.

San Francisco sprawls. But if you want access to Sunset, Haight, UCSF medical or Golden Gate Park, this is an excellent choice at a reasonable price.

Among the unique conveniences is the fact that the parking lot across the street is full of zipcars. This can be really useful in the Bay Area. Light rail is only a copule of blocks away. As I said, San Francisco is all about location.

We recently stayed for one night while visiting friends in San Francisco. There is public parking across the street from the hotel, which we found very convenient. The room was clean and comfortable. The staff went beyond what was necessary. For example, we had some food with us that we needed refrigerated. The front desk tagged it for us and placed it in the kitchen refrigerator, which we found helpful. They helped us find good restaurants.

The hotel is one block from Haight, giving us lots of options for shopping and dining. It was a pleasant experience and we would stay at Stanyan Park again.
