Staff at Book Passage are the best. So knowledgable! The main store in Corte Madera (Marin County, just north of San Francisco) offers loads of classes and workshops as well as books (and a great little cafe). They've been around for a long time. It's THE place to meet NYT best-selling authors when they're touring with a new book - often the only place they stop in the Bay Area.

I personally enjoy small, local bookstores. This one is special, due to its calm and bright place, where you can browse the books hearing the seagulls.

Book Passage at the Ferry Building is a renowned book store in San Francisco and has one of the largest booking calendars of authors in the world.

Recently, Art Peterson did a reading of 5 essays from his book, "Why Is That Bridge Orange? San Francisco for the curious, which is a best seller and deemed one of the best guide books in the City. It was accompanied by a video of pictures in the book, as well as historical pictures. Readings at Book Passage usually take around 30 to 40 minutes, with a question and answer period afterward. Books are purchased at the store and can be autographed by the author. The day before Art's reading, Hillary Clinton did a book signing and 1,000 fans snaked their way out of the Ferry Building waiting for her to sign their book.

This a very popular store for both readers and authors. Check out their calendar to see the guest authors of the month. The Ferry Building is full of treasures but be sure to go to the back of the building in the corner for this charming and well stocked book store. The dramatic view of the bay through their floor to ceiling windows is only an added asset.
