“Very Nice Place to Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2011

The staff was great and the price could not be beat, plus the free parking and access to internet were a plus. Right next to Grant Street in Chinatown and a walk around the corner to Columbus and several fantastic Italian Restaurants. I do not know what everyone else was complaining about noise. We stayed in 102 and it was clean, quiet and the service was fantastic. Will definately stay here again when I visit SF.

Ok, first things first, this is a Motor Inn. If this is not your traveling style, then you might be disappointed and should consider other options. However, if you are ok with this, then read ahead...

Pros:
- good for those on a budget
- no frills - it's a basic room. However, the frills would be that you get Starz and Encore cable channels. And the next morning, they left some Svenhard's packaged danishes in the room (this is no fancy B&B place). And there was a computer in the tiny lobby.
- clean room for what it was, except for the shower curtain, but hey, it's a motel. Oh, and it was one of those curved bathtub rods too, so that's a plus.
- great location for Chinatown/Little Italy
- despite the hustle/bustle area, felt pretty safe, but I wouldn't walk too far down the street at night.
- decent view of the Transamerica building and Oakland Bay Bridge in the back of the property (go to the back top floor for some photo ops).
- 2 elevators were clean and quick, even goes directly to the underground excess parking lot. made a buzzard noise after each floor passed so I acted as if I were playing some quiz game and said a wrong answer.
- coffee maker (but I did not try it as it didn't look all too exciting)
- sink is separated from the toilet/shower room.
- free parking!!!!

Cons:
- it's a motor inn, hence no frills (but see point #2 in the pros list)
- room is a bit dated and somewhat dreary. could be brighter.
- it's on a busy street, so the noise is a bit high. If you prefer a quieter room, ask for a room in the back. There is a significant difference.
- TV is bulky and dated and some channels came in with a lot of snow.
- the amenities were the tiniest of bar soaps. never seen any that small before. but they do give quite a bit in the basket.
- dirty stained outdoor carpets
- the thinnest towels ever

Overall, if you're looking for a reasonably priced, basic, no frills room near the Chinatown/Little Italy area with FREE parking, then this place would be a great option. If you're looking to splurge at a nice hotel with nice amenities, then this not the best option. Just depends on what your traveling needs are, and for this trip, it worked out fine for me.

I had chosen this hotel because it was the best combination between location in SF, reviews from other customers and price. We were not disappointed.
The room was good, clean with comfortable beds. Parking was free (this is a key plus in SF), the location in Cinatown just at the edge of Little Italy was giving accesss to many good Cafe and Restaurants.
Both Union Square and the Fishermans Warfs were reachable on foot (about 15-20 min walk)
Rooms on the front are quite noisy, but with windows well closed we were not disturbed in our sleep.

I stayed at this hotel twice. First with my husband and kids and it worked out great. Then a friend wanted to go to SF so I rebooked it. Each time it was the best rate in such a key location. It is right on the fringe of Chinatown and North Beach. Great restaurants and cafes abound. All your chinatown trinket shopping is right there. You can also walk to Hyde Powell cable car to Fisherman's Wharf and it is a 20 minute busride to Farmer's Market. We walked all the way to Mission and back in a day. The best thing about this place is the free parking, then the location, then the cheap price, then the rooms, which are clean and decent. On the outside it is a bit dirty and retro but don't let that put you off. Yes, 2 blocks away there is a go go club, but I never felt unsafe in that area. All that said, the first time I stayed with my family on the backside of the hotel. BIG DIFFERENCE in noise level from the front of the hotel which faces the street. This is where our room was last visit. Hardly any noise and a somewhat nice view in the back and lots of noise all night long on the front. But you're in central San Fran for $100 a nite, so... There is heating but no A/C. They do provide fans in the room. Temperature was not a problem. Across the street is a great Dim Sum restaurant called Gold Mountain.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the back of hotel, especially if you have kids, tell them.

We were on a East coast to West coast trip which took us about a month so lots of hotels and motor inns visited before we got here. This wasn't the best and it wasn't the worst we stayed in. If you are not planning to stay very long this place is close to all the 'big sights' and it has free parking. We didn't realise how important this was until we got talking to other people who seemed to be paying big money to stay at other lodging places in the City. One couple had to move out of a hotel becasue of the crippling charges applied when they turned up. This happened to us in Santa Barbara but on that occasion there was free parking nearby. There doesn't seem to be any such facility in San Fran!

By the way, the 15 minutes walk to Fisherman's Wharf is all downhill and it is a killer trying to get back up as taxis are scarce at the Wharf and the Trolley had long queues whenever we wanted to use it. I would recommend a bus pass as they are easy to use and several run though Chinatown close to the Hotel.

The room was basic but clean and tidy and in a place like SF how much time do you want to be in the room for? It is also can be noisy during the night. The lobby staff were excellent whenever we dealt with them. They explained weekends were noisy in SF and our experience confirmed that. We made good use of the lobby computer and the reasonably priced self service laundry facilities were particularly welcome.

We were looking for a place to stay in San Francisco for the family (3 kids) and found Royal Pacific Motor Inn on hotels.com. I compared the price at hotels.com with the price if I were to book directly at the hotel on their own web-site. The price was almost the same (156 USD + tax, total 186 USD incl. tax), but I made the booking through hotels.com because there it was clear that we could stay 5 people in the room (often there is a limit of four persons which makes it a bit difficult if you have three children). At check out time they wanted to charge me 215 USD per night incl tax, that is almost 30 USD extra per night. They refused to acknowledge that my price was given including tax. So they have charged me two times for the tax.
This is a kind of discussion you don't want to end up with during a vacation so make sure you have a correct quote if staying here. Otherwise the hotel was OK.

We stayed here 1 night, just to see Chinatown and to have a place to sleep before driving south to Monterey and the US1.
The room was not that big, but it was clean. The bed was nice. You could hear some outside noise even though we requested (and got) a room on the backside. Yet no problems to fall asleep, so if you are a light sleeper, request a room on the backside. Broadway is a very busy street. Also the walls between the rooms itself are kinda thin. You could hear each word the people in the other room said. That's no problem for me, as long as they keep their loud mouths shut at night (which they did).

Couldn't find the swith for the AC, but it was cold that day, so the heater worked just fine.
Wifi signal was perfect, even in the back. The TV had some bad colors, the center was all blue. Because we stayed for one night, I didn't complain about it, but reported it while checking out.

I still don't know why there is a red light in the bathroom. Looked like a room straight out of the red light district in my own country. ;-)

Will stay here again if I want to visit Chinatown.
You'll get what you pay for.
