the cliff house has undergone renovations again. the view is always great though the prices for the restaurant are a bit high. parking nearby in Land's end area, sometimes on the street in front. be prepared for tourists.

We used to go to the Cliff House about 3 -4 times a year for about thirty years and it was great. Friendly atmosphere, laid back, un-sophisticated and fun. Now it's a foo-foo restaurant with no charm & high prices.

While this restaurant is a bit out of the way (a $30-$40 cab ride each way from Union Square), it was well worth it. Make your trip to the Cliff House an event. Walk along the ocean path that includes the Sutro Bath Ruins, and a winding trail along the coast to the north and Ocean Beach to the south. Then have dinner at Sutro's watching the sunset, the waves, and the rocks from a whole wall of large windows that overlook the ocean. The food is very good, but don't come for the food. Come for the view and the experience of walking the beaches and trails. A nice dinner is just a bonus. Highly recommended if you can spend some time before or after you eat enjoying the area and you have your own car or can afford to drop $80 for round trip from the main SF tourist areas.

A house with great view!

The only thing is that I recommend arriving there a bit early to see the sunset. Because at night, you can't really see anything...

My husband and I rented Segways and spent the day whirring thru all of Golden Gate Park. After a long stretch along Ocean Beach, up a steep but smooth concrete concourse, we arrived hungry and tired at Cliff House the only restaurant visible since we entered the park hours ago. We didn't expect much, knowing that most customers are tourists who don't have the power of failing to return to incentivize good food and service. Well, weren't we the wrongest people in San Fran that day!

The food was great, starting with the unexpected delight of a basket of popovers and chilled butter. The fish and chips could not have been better -- so good that we had to ask our waiter how a tourist attraction pulls that challenge off so well. Answer: they change out the oil and the batter throughout the day.

Speaking of our waiter, I wish I could tell you his name. He was a joy to know and be served by. Probably the best, most knowledgeable and personable waiter we encountered in our 8 days in S.F., a city full of professional wait-staff. I hope the house knows what a treasure he is.

I should mention that we ate in the casual side of the restaurant at a window table. It was a wonderful lunch on a totally wonderful day. The last leg of our Segway adventure -- up the granite trails through Land's End -- could not have been more splendid and rewarding.
