Description: Colibri Mexican Bistro lies in the heart of San Francisco's bustling Theatre District, just a block west of Union Square. Spanish for "hummingbird," Colibri combines the simplicity of authentic family recipes with fresh, high-quality ingredients to bring diners unparalleled, delectable Mexican cuisine in a charming, turn of the century cantina setting. This warm and inviting eatery is reminiscent of Mexico City restaurants of the 1900's, decorated with classic Spanish paintings and accentuated by a vast collection of uniquely shaped and rare tequila bottles. Filled with energy, Colibri projects black and white 1940's Latino-film clips at the front of the house, while the open kitchen in back provides glimpses of its colorful cuisine in different stages of completions. Boosting a knowledgeable staff and attentive, sociable management, Colibri is dedicated to providing a memorable dining experience for both tourist and locals alike.

“Awesome before the theater or after shopping Union Square”

Food is really something special with some unique dishes. Loved the carnitas, empanadas and tamales. Great friendly service and so convenient to the Curran. You can linger over coffee and hop across the street 10 minutes before the curtain goes up! Will surely go back. One minor gripe is paying $2 extra for chips to go with the guacamole.

“tasty, tasty margaritas”
Reviewed July 6, 2014

This is a great restaurant to go to before a show at 1 of the 2 theaters across the street. Super fine margaritas. The tableside handmade guacamole is fantastic and the fresh tortillas that are served in lieu of chips are perfect. A bit noisy but hey, its sure popular!

“Unbelievable Value”
Reviewed July 2, 2014

In a neighborhood where breakfast for a couple can set you back $55, Colibri managed to serve the best meal I had in San Francisco and do it at a reasonable price. I'm a big fan of chilles relleno and these, stuffed with carnitas, were the best I have had hands down.

If I have to find something to criticize, it would be that the design of the restaurant makes it hard for someone who doesn't hear so well to start with to carry on a conversation.

“Excellent Mexican Food Near Union Square”
Reviewed June 28, 2014

Mexican like very few places I've ever experienced. From the white corn, soft tortillas to the roasted chicken entree, this place was different than most Mexican restaurants. The guacamole is a must have appetizer. My dietary restrictions were handled with zero issues and I really enjoyed the roasted chicken entree.
