I visited the Franciscan on the last night of a three week tour of America and was hoping for a memorable night.
Seeing 'whole crab' mentioned on several items on the menu, I went for Petit Filet Mignon Steak and Crab for a not very bargain price of $49 thinking that I would be getting crab meat ready to eat. When it arrived, the steak was indeed very petit but the crab came complete with a set of crackers to break the shell. This is probably more my ignorance rather than any fault of the restaurant, but I spent the meal fighting the crab for its meat as I inexpertly wrestled with the crackers.
As other reviewers have pointed out the view to Alcatraz is magnificent. The blush cocktail is worth a try and you are eating in a restaurant frequented by the stars of the past. But, the tables are small the prices are high and I for one, didn't have the relaxing long evening I was hoping for. The whole thing felt a little rushed.
Maybe a different evening and a different choice from the menu would have left me feeling that it was a five star experience.
One other note, the restaurant has excellent street car links and car parking is close by. The Powell/Hyde Cable Car is only a couple of blocks away to finish your evening with a memorable trip back to the City.
