I was in the San Francisco area, and craving for exotic Salvadorian food, searched the web and found la Santaneca. A small, hole in the wall kind of restaurant with amazing food. I had a whole fried fish with salad, rice and beans, pupusas for appetizers, buñuelos, and plantains in molasses for dessert, all super good. This is a neighborhood restaurant frequented by locals it seems; it was great and enjoyed the experienced very much.

Some local friends met us here for dinner. Very close to the BART station, and I would definitely not recommend walking or taking the bus because the neighborhood seemed pretty rough.

There is no alcohol served in this restaurant, and they only accept cash. The fried plantain appetizer was delicious. The pupusas were great. There was a substantial wait for them to be prepared, but they warned of this on the menu in advance. Keeping water in our glasses seemed to be a challenge.

Cozy, and definitely a destination for locals. La Santaneca is worth trying, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat there. Very authentic Salvadorean experience.

Greasy and not healthy at all but what do you expect when eating pupusas. Best ones I've had in the city and they have great tamarindo drink!!

Try the fresco de ensalada and the beef soup.
