“Great!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2014 via mobile

Simply great! The hotel is beautiful and well located, the staff is very kind too.
The american breakfast included was always delicious and on time. The free internet service was fast and without connection troubles.
Because our flight was at night, the staff gave us facilities to keep our luggage after the check-out and to get airport transportation.
We'll come back!

Quirky cool hotel. Was clean and great location. Good value for money but I hardly slept despite earplugs! Walls are paper thin, city noise is loud and floors are creaky. Also no air conditioning but too loud to open windows. Would not stay hear again due to noise but if noise doesn't bother you then good choice for money.

Quirky old (renovated) hotel in a terrific location. Close to Union Square, transport, restaurants, Chinatown and much more.
Don't expect too much from the rooms, theyre small and a bit sparse. If youre there for the city this hotel will suit, but if youre after some luxury, maybe not.
Breakfast was a basic "make your own" but fine.
Room was clean and staff were very very friendly. Enjoyed our stay.

On our trip to San Francisco I expected to pay a bit of a premium while visiting, though I was a tad surprised at the size of the room vs. room rate. The hotel has (2) room options, en-suite facilities or shared. We chose en-suite and this was attributed to the higher cost. The few times we spoke with the staff, all were very pleasant, one even went as far as helping us with our luggage onto the old metal grate elevator, ran up the flight of stairs and was waiting on us to help us with our luggage as we exited the elevator. The hotel does not have air conditioning but with the cool San Francisco air it stayed fairly comfortable; fans are available but be sure to ask for one early as there isn’t enough for all rooms. (The front desk did save one for us on our second night). The only negative to our stay and this wasn’t the hotel’s fault; our room faced an alley, approximately every 2 hours there was a garbage truck emptying bins and the bar was throwing glass bottles into the recycler. It was VERY noisy. The front desk clerk did offer to move us but we had settled into the room in the short time we were there and decided it was too much hassle to move and since we had the fan we closed the windows. It was still noisy but not near as bad as night one. We parked at a garage (1) block away and paid $54 for a 2 ½ day stay. (Very affordable considering last year we paid $84 for (1) night in downtown Chicago). And the hotel is about 2 give/take blocks from public transit. I believe it was an old trolley car that stopped at all the “hot spots”. Note you only have to pay the $2 passenger fee once and you will be given a receipt that is good for approximately 6-8 hours, but not all day. We didn’t know this and paid each time we rode.

Room Tip: Alley room = noise.

The artworks on the walls in the rooms make this hotel highly individual and this seems strangely appropriate in San Francisco's French quarter. As other reviewers have pointed out, this is otherwise a budget-style hotel with features (such as the spartan breakfast) bordering on a hostel-type environment. It suited our needs and the hotel is very well situated but we were underwhelmed by everything other than the comfy beds. Our room is small but very clean and adequate, the breakfast is convenient but by no means offering extensive choice and the staff are there if you need them but are by-and-large unenthusiastic.

Inconvenient factors include the lack of air con and the buzzer entry system. We had to rely on someone from reception buzzing us in each time we returned to the hotel as we weren't supplied with a key and they weren't always prompt. Most significantly, our room is like a sauna as there is no air con and ventilation is minimal. Noise from the street with the windows open is prohibitive to sleep so the whole situation is a bit difficult.

We really only needed a bed and a clean shower in reasonable proximity to the attractions and the Hotel des Arts delivered a unique take on this facility so by all means stay here but don't expect luxury.

Straight to the point: it's a budget hotel. This means small but clean rooms, no service and a very simple complimentary breakfast in a tiny cramped room without tables and just juice, coffee, apples, bread and bagels. Still, it offers an OUTSTANDING value for the money.

Located virtually next door to Chinatown gate, you are really, really close to excellent restaurants, the Montgomery St. Bart station, Union Square, the SFMoMA and the best flagship stores. One can easily take the Bart from SFO airport and get here really fast and cheap. And since it is very close to Embarcadero, you don't have to spend too much with transportation.

The hotel itself is located in a century old building in very good condition and the thematic rooms decorated by artists are a plus that adds to its overall avant-garde charm (just make sure you first give your room a look, some themes can be a bit disturbing depending on your taste). And a big thumbs up to the staff, Patricia and Celia are really helpful.

If you are on a tight budget and want a well located, good place to sleep and take a shower, this is one of your best bets.

Husband and I stayed here for the weekend in SF. There are so many amazing works of art on the walls. If you enjoy street art and don't mind a small room, you'll love this place. Our room overlooked a little courtyard with brick walls covered in art. I really enjoyed this place! Quirky, fun experience.
