If you are going to San Francisco be sure to stay at the Hotel Cornell de France and eat in the Jeanne D'arc restaurant. The menu is original and the food excellent quality and great price. If you stay, breakfast is included and is a full American breakfast. This is a hidden gem in downtown San Francisco at Powell and Bush streets.

This 4-course prix fix dinner was only $42 but was divine. The setting is decorated as medieval-reminiscent. The live wandering violinist added to the atmosphere without being intrusive. The asparagus soup (with potatoes, I think) was a toasty starter on a chilly evening, followed by a choice of green salad (mine with blue cheese, his with shrimp salad in avocado), then duck l'orange (perfect portion, not too rich) and filet mignon with cognac sauce (perfectly cooked), and - to top off the evening - a totally sensational orange souffle (pictured on tripadvisor). People, that was a seriously fabulous dessert - piping hot, perfectly risen, oh my, oh my!!!! The only bummer was that we were seated at the far end of the same table as another couple, even though there were plenty of empty tables for two. Hoping for a more private dinner conversation, we asked if we could sit elsewhere. "If you insist," was the frowning answer - apparently the 'flow' for the wait staff was easier when new arrivals were seated near each other. Since we DID insist, we ended up having a lovely time (and the wait staff were cheerful and helpful), but the fuss seemed needless. Still, we'd go back in a heartbeat - if for no other reason than the souffle.

The chef at this restaurant knows what he is doing. I had the lamb shank. My husband had the duck confit. We couldn't believe how good it was and why we had never heard of this restaurant. We also had a great bottle of wine to go with the meal. We will definitely be back

It's a slightly pretentious, but modest French restaurant that has the important things right, but screws up the details.

First it's downstairs, across from the bottom of the stairs and doesn't have a sign that clearly identifies the correct door, so we walked back up and had to ask to walk back down and enter???

The general decor is make believe France with slightly wrong colors and Joan of Arc motif.

I lived in the town next to where she spent her last night before her capture in 1429 and they have nothing but the castle and a plaque.

There were no baguette ends. How is that possible? All loaves have ends, but they didn't.

The first three wines were not the years on the menu. Finally, one was and the Cahor was very good, especially for $24.

The onion soup was too cheesy, but good flavor.

The salad had a champagne vinaigrette and was light and good.
mine included duck rillette(pate)

The lamb shank was traditional, slow roasted, tender and in a demiglace.

The scallops were delicious.

The mini potatoes au gratin were crisp on top, as they should be.

The tartelette was a little too simple, but the creme anglas was just perfect.

I have read others reviews and frankly think they have little idea of what $115 buys in wine and meals at a french restaurant today.

I have eaten thousands of such meals and although I truly wish everything cost less, the cab ride from SFO to the hotel was $60. How does that compare with a real meal for the same amount?

This is a sold, if not silly restaurant that deserves it's success. If it was on the first floor, meals would be $20 apiece more.

We enjoyed 3 breakfasts and 2 dinners in the restaurant.
Service was punctual, the waiter and waitresses attentive and alert to the fact that one course had been completed, ready to be cleared away, and the next course delivered without delay.
The French chef was charming and agreed to write down his recipe for the best souffle I have ever had!! I treasure this recipe.
Both breakfasts and dinners were delightful - absolutely no complaints.
In fact, bouquets for quality of service and meals.
The meals were included in our room price, which was very reasonable.
