As simple as this: we were looking for a great seafood place that wasn't super expensive. The Hyde Street Seafood House was recommended to us by a local and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent, service was great, and we would definitely return when we visit the City.

Tried Hyde Street out after seeing the 4 star rating on Yelp and reading a few reviews. Def has the locals vibe and is not in a touristy part of town. The server was very nice; he may even have been the manager. Bread was great. Caesar was ok. The clams menuiere were too fishy and had a strong ammonia smell. My hubby had the halibut special cooked in the parchment. Fish was cooked just fine but the other items on his dish were lacking in any flavor. I ordered the pepper ahi and it was cooked to medium rare which was great - I did ask if I could have it rare and was told that the chef doesn't like to be told to cook to a different temp, he doesn't like to change things. So ok - we went with medium rare. There was way more garlic than pepper and it was tough to finish it without picking off the pepper and garlic coating. Overall it was not an unpleasant but a bit out of the way to come just for the restaurant. My kids were still hungry so they ordered chinese food from the hole in the wall across the street, U Lee, and I have to say that was awesome!!

If you like seafood! We had oysters: 12 for $14! Hard to beat! Also good bisque, fish en papillote, sourdough. Friendly and relaxed service.

This place is a true neighborhood gem in the vast and varied mines of San Francisco restaurants. It's relatively unsung & definitely untrendy. Yet seafood is fresh, delicious, and reasonable. A recent meal of dungeness crab was without doubt our best dinner in 4 nights in San Francisco. I'm not a fresh oyster person but the restaurant is known for these, and neighboring tables were clearly enjoying them. There are also steaks & other options for those uninterested in maritime fare. Ambience is clubby - dark wood paneling and a big cafe-style window on the street. Service is impeccable. Also it's convenient - just hop off the Hyde St cable car as it turns the corner onto Hyde. We've been twice, and we'll be back.

We (4) arrived for happy hour and it was great. Oysters were $14 for a dozen. I don't want to say how many oysters we ate. Our meals were delicious and service was great. Can't wait to go back.
